I read that a 16GB iPhone 5S costs $198.70 to produce. Of course that price does not include R&D and other costs that go into producing something. You may think the price is a rip-off, but the free market lets Apple charge that price and people line up to pay it.

So with your reasoning I would expect Apple to give you only $200 to $250 on release day for your used iPhone 6. Thanks for clearing that up. Makes perfect sense now.

Have an old 3G sitting around that will never get used. Thought maybe they'd give me even $25 for it.. Nope, $0.

They Would Not Take Mine

I wanted to trade in a iPhone 5S for a new iPhone 5S and they would not even let me do it. I needed an unlocked one. They said they could not take a 5S in as a trade until the 6 comes out.... dumb....

So many people that walk into the stores don't know any better. Their not geeks like you and me and they don't even know how to use a computer to sale on Craigslist or eBay. Can you really blame Apple for taking advantage of these people? Apple has no problem in charging you double to triple the amount the actual cost for a brand new device. So why complain now?

Apple's not taking advantage of anyone here. They are providing a service that many people will gladly pay for (in this case, they're paying for it by taking less money for the used phone) for the convenience of not having to deal with the cluster****s known as ebay and craigslist.

For lots of people (especially people who aren't tech savvy), they'll pay the premium to not have to list and trying to sell it while avoiding trying to get scammed. It's an easy $200 for those people who don't want to try to sell it on their own and otherwise it would just end up sitting in their drawer collecting dust.

Apple just did you a favor. You can easily get $300 for a 16gig iPhone 5s if you sell it yourself and you sure as heck can get $225 for it even if it’s blacklisted. Why would you even throw money down the toilet like that? Is it broken?

How about the people who don't want to get killed buying and selling iphones on craigslist:

I had personally done hundreds of craigslist transactions prior to being robbed at gunpoint. Since then, I have done two - both in my neighborhood.

It's not my reasoning, it's Business 101. You say that the price of an iPhone is a rip-off, but what do you base that on? I definitely agree that there any many other ways to make more money back from your iPhone than trading it in to Apple, but I'm not so sure that the original price of an iPhone is a rip-off just because you say so.

Read this review about the one-plus-one and try to ask that question again with a straight face.

It’s not only Apple. It’s also Samsung and HTC. So far only Google and Motorola have been doing the right thing by not ripping off customers. And guess what; you can still get over $300 for a used 16gig Nexus 5 which retails for $350. A loss of about $50 to $75 on a year old phone is amazing. Even the Nexus 4 is still going for $200.

I guess I'm missing your point. Are you suggesting that Apple should sell the next iPhone, which will fly off shelves, at a lower price?

After the 5 came out I was somehow able to sell my cracked (1 crack, no spider) 4S 16GB unlocked white on eBay for $250 within about an hour.

People want these things

A colleague offered me £150 for my 13 month old 32GB iPhone 5. He said it was old tech now. What should a 32GB i5 (white/silver) in pristine physical condition go for privately? Prices seem to have come way down for older iPhones. I'm wanting to move this on before the i6 comes out, when it will presumably fetch even less money.

iPhone 5, as relatively recent as it may be, has not been manufactured for almost a whole year. It's discontinued and no longer sold by apple. Therefore it's of much less value then, for instance, the iPhone 5C which is inferior as far as body build (though superior in capable LTE bands). As crazy as it seems, at one point the iPad 2 was worth far more then the iPad 3 just because the iPad 3 was discontinued but the iPad 2 was not. an even weirder thing happened with the iPad 4. thank goodness the ipad 2 is finally dying a deserved death!!!
