This gives a glimpse into just how constrained the situation really is.

It is probably to also quell any suggestions that Apple are profiting from the shortage. By cutting models, they free up resources for the others, so it isn't a total loss, but it does restrict the choice given the memory can't be changed.

Isn't is soooo ironic that Apple is working hard on building systems that are the very reason it is having to cut it's consumer products from sale..

By the time it's launched it's Ai it'll have nothing to sell to us for it to run on.

The price of GPU's went way up during the Bit Coin craze a few years ago then the price came back down only to go back up in the last 6 months due to the AI demand.

I guarantee that no one is building a PC dirt cheap if they are using M2 NVME storage, DDR 5 RAM, and a good GPU.

I believe that the ultimate goal—and not just Apple's—is to prevent consumers from buying any PCs or Macs. In the end, you only have a smartphone or tablet and pay for an AI subscription. A continuation of the “you pay but never own anything” strategy.

I'm pretty sure this is more to do with the M5 versions being soon to release than RAM issues. RAM issues are real, but Apple has plenty of RAM for other products.

That’s because they bought a ton of them beforehand. Especially A-series chips. It will hit them even more after July

I expect this to delay the introduction of new minis and Studios until sometime next year. Why introduce new desktops with so few configuration options?

Maybe the M5 versions are STOCKED with enough RAM and this is only affecting the M4 (and M3 Ultra) series? We can dream.

Turns out it doesn't matter if you're a supply chain genius when that supply chain just ceases to function. Had Cook known this would happen right now 5 years ago, there would still have been nothing he could have done to stop it. Memory production isn't something that you expand (or contract) in a few months - or hell; a few years. It's why the memory manufacturers aren't frantically expanding their operations; because by the time they've built out the infrastructure to do so, the boom will be over and they'll have wasted billions building infrastructure that they either have to get rid off, or if they decide to use it will cause prices to completely crash, making the investment a money pit.

RAM supply issues are real. Apple would rather sell you an $1,899 MBP rather than a $999 Mac mini. Both M5/24GB.

Being good at supply chain doesn’t mean you can make components appear out of thin air

I honestly question the functional usefulness of higher RAM spec on MBAs due to the fanless nature.

It seems like most things you're likely to do that would really utilize 24+ GB of RAM would get hampered by throttling on an MBA.

Having any fan at all, like in the Mac Mini, does absolute wonders for this.

Apple obviously prefers to sell to Apple ecosystem customers who are far more likely to subscribe to Apple services.

Many of the Mac mini/Studio users in this market are looking for headless OpenClaw boxes. They're not there for the Apple ecosystem and won't buy AppleCare+.
