Apple today reduced prices on all refurbished models of the original iPad and iPad 2 in its online store, knocking between $20 and $50 off of each model. The price drops include:

iPad 2

- 16 GB Wi-Fi: $319, down $30 from $349
- 32 GB Wi-Fi: $399, down $50 from $449
- 64 GB Wi-Fi: $499, down $50 from $449

- 16 GB Wi-Fi+3G: $449, down $30 from $479
- 32 GB Wi-Fi+3G: $529, down $50 from $579
- 64 GB Wi-Fi+3G: $629, down $50 from $679

Original iPad

- 16 GB Wi-Fi: $279, down $20 from $299
- 32 GB Wi-Fi: $349, down $50 from $399
- 64 GB Wi-Fi: $449, down $50 from $499

- 16 GB Wi-Fi+3G: $379, down $20 from $399
- 32 GB Wi-Fi+3G: $449, down $50 from $499
- 64 GB Wi-Fi+3G: $549, down $50 from $599

Apple has yet to begin offering refurbished models of the new third-generation iPad, but for comparison last year the company first offered refurbished iPad 2 models in late August at a $50 discount from brand-new pricing.

(Thanks, Brad!)

wow, it's pretty amazing that you can buy a good-as-new iPad 2 from Apple for a mere $319...

Or a perfectly good iPad 1 for $279! Compare what an iPad 1 can do for you (and how well it can do it) vs. a sluggish, small-screen $200 Kindle Fire with no great apps! The iPad 1 is even a better Kindle reader than the Kindle.

4 bills for a 32GB iPad 2? Tempting…

Although it will be iOS 6 that determines for me whether I even want an iPad, at any price.

These are about to sell out soooo quick, especially with Mother's Day coming up. $319. Wow. That's a steal!!!

We have a couple iPad 1's around yet. With every release, iOS marginalizes their usability and capabilities. It's as if they've EOL'd em but are still selling them anyway. Weird.

They ought to be $200 for an iPad1, $300 for an iPad2. $400 for a new iPad2, $500 for an iPad3.

I agree. I won't be upgrading the iOS software on my iPad 1 any more because the performance drop was very noticeable after upgrading to iOS 5. I should have kept it on 4.3.3

Wow... So I could get a 64GB iPad 2 for $499, or I could get a 64GB iPad 3 for $699...

I'm really not sure the iPad 3 is worth that much more, and having actually held the device in my hand, I actually do feel the difference and prefer the lighter weight of the iPad 2.

Funny you mentioned that. I thought it was just my imagination but the performance on my iPad 1 seems to have diminished also. Even after a restore the crashes, freezes, and sluggishness are noticeable.

Yes. From what I read on the forum this is apple's way to encourage users to upgrade their old hardware...

I traded in my 1st gen 64GB WiFi/3g for $200 and at this price they'll resell it and make another $350 off of it. Pretty smart if you ask me. I got some help moving up, someone else gets a great bargain on an entry level model with teeth and Apple makes money. That's a smart company.

How do you "trade-in" an old iPad to Apple for credit?!

The iPad 1 weighs four times a Kindle 4, so... not so much.

The Kindle is nice and light, and the smaller screen helps that, it’s true. However, for that one purpose (pure portability even if functionality is greatly lost), get an e-ink Kindle for even cheaper, and with much longer battery life. If your needs are greater than that, then you give up so much with a Fire that weight alone will not make it worth it.

I see a reason for the e-ink Kindles to exist (weight and bright-sunlight outdoorsmen/readers especially) but not so much reason for the Fire to exist. From a consumer-value perspective.

One could sell on ebay and cragslist and get near market value on the device. I usually have close friends buy my older one or two year old parts when I wish to upgrade. I put applecare on everything so they are happy to have warranty and piece of mind.

the $40 extra bucks is soooo worth it for the ipad 2 over the ipad1 (edit 16 gig wifi's)

i'm surprised they can move the ipad 1's at those prices, especially if they all come loaded with iOS 5

It's an incredible price for sure. I paid $329 not long ago for a refurb v1.

To be fair, we should compare the iPad 1 sale refurb price of $279 to a Kindle Fire sale refurb price of $139. The Fire is half the price, which matters to a lot of people.

**BEWARE**

DO NOT BUY THE REFURBISHED IPAD 2!

Maybe it was a coincidence, but I bought one and it had a faulty display. When the Apple store gave me a replacement, its display had the exact same problem, but worse plus a faulty home button.

Apparently, the currently available refurbished iPad 2s are the same ones that turned up with bad LG displays shortly after launch. It seems Apple hasn't been replacing them during their "refurbishment" process! The displays have a troublesome flashlight-like light bleed coming from their edges. The problem is most noticeable on dark screens.

After several weeks of arguing back and forth with Mr. Cook's office via e-mail and telephone, I was told that the displays were operating "within specifications" and that the best they'd do for me was to replace it "only one more time" or provide me a refund. (Nice, huh?)

Please heed my words, this was easily the most horrid experience I've ever had dealing with a company. Apple wasted a good deal of my time, money, and energy without any compensation. Do not buy one, they'll treat you like a second class citizen if you have a problem with it!
