Yes. From what I read on the forum this is apple's way to encourage users to upgrade their old hardware...

My iPhone 3g was rendered practically useless after ios4 was installed. Not making that mistake again!

If apple seriously think that it's acceptable for upgrades to be offered on hardware that doesn't really support the upgrade that's pushed at them via iTunes, only for users to find out later that their device just crawls along, then they overestimate loyalty...

One could sell on ebay and cragslist and get near market value on the device. I usually have close friends buy my older one or two year old parts when I wish to upgrade. I put applecare on everything so they are happy to have warranty and piece of mind.

Yeah, I certainly have seen devices for sale on Criagslist and eBay...I have bought iPod touches for my young daughters in that manner to save money.

But if you read johncrab's full post, he states that he "sold" it back and "they will resell it" as if he sold back to Apple and they are in turn refurbing and reselling. I guess he is selling through the usual channels and didn't realize this article is about Apple selling used/refurbished products.

The Kindle is nice and light, and the smaller screen helps that, it’s true. However, for that one purpose (pure portability even if functionality is greatly lost), get an e-ink Kindle for even cheaper, and with much longer battery life. If your needs are greater than that, then you give up so much with a Fire that weight alone will not make it worth it.

I see a reason for the e-ink Kindles to exist (weight and bright-sunlight outdoorsmen/readers especially) but not so much reason for the Fire to exist. From a consumer-value perspective.

I agree with that 100%. The Fire trades in much of what makes the basic Kindle great--light, small, bright-light readability-- for some poorly done extra functionality. I have both Kindle and iPad ("The New"), and I use each regularly.

I recently bought a refurbed iPad2 (after the $100 price drop, but before this last price drop...DOH!) and have no complaints. I've never once been like, wow I really wish the screen was clearer. It's a great display and all the apps and websites I use look terrific. I'm not a gamer, other than the occasional Angry birds, or paper toss, so I can't speak from that point of view though.

The new iPads I played with at the store were both heavier and hotter. I think the iPad2 is a solid tablet, and will be around for a while. Speed wise its still very quick and is pretty much instantaneous for all apps Ive used. So long as they don't keep weighing down the iOS with updates (like how they rendered my iPhone 3g virtually useless with some of the last iOS 4 updates) I think the 2 is a keeper, and a great deal at this price.

I agree. Same thing happened to my iPhone 3g, and it REALLY TICKED ME OFF!! I could barely text after those last updates, not to mention the wifi suddenly stopped working. I did the $49 upgrade to the iPhone 3gs which I still have, and am going to stop doing the updates now out of fear that they want to suck some more money out of me.

The iPad2 seems to have enough horse power to play the iOS upgrade game for a while more. Maybe get it to 6 plus a few minor updates then test the waters from there. They don't make billions in revenue by making things last, that's for sure. Planned obsolence in full effect my friends!!!

Hey guys, I was thinking about buying a refurbished iPad 2 last week when it was $350 so now with the price drop, it's definitely making a lot of sense.

Here's my question: I understand the iPad 3 has the retina display and other improvements on the iPad 2. Do you guys think I should get a refurbished iPad 2? And how long will it take for the 2 to go obsolete (in terms of apps and such). Thanks in advance for the help!

Got a bad iPad 2, but it worked out.

I bought a refurb iPad 2 a couple of weeks ago. Display was fine. Response was fine. Etc. But, the thing would not keep running. Ran for 1-5 minutes, shut off and then rebooted. Decided to take it back to an Apple Store, returned it, and bought a 16GB Wi-fi new iPad. Not your typical experience, but since I really wanted a new iPad in the first place, figured it was Karma or something like that. Actually most folks have good experiences with their refurbs. I may be looking at a refurb Air to replace my aging (4 years) Macbook in the next few months.

The price difference between iPad 1 and 2 is ridiculously small and the difference between both is as big as iPhone 3G/3GS imho. Does that mean they are almost out of stock on the iPad 1 and only need a dozen more idiots?

My iPad 1 is running iOS 5 just fine. We have a 3 at the office and it isn't massively faster and I was surprised that the screen didn't make all that much difference to me. Smoother text but overall barely notice the difference. I wouldn't suggest anyone buy a first gen iPad now since the price difference isn't great but so far the updates still aren't enough to move me off the original.
