Sounds like you're a NO at this point on the m2. Is that right?
Yup I'll stick with my M1 until its not supported which lets be serious was already on its way out so next year likely it will be either dropped or just get no new features.

iPhone will be it for me in the Apple world.

This can only end in a marketing disaster.
The trade-in program was an excellent opportunity to boast about the ecological impact or being able to recycle old phones....
Now less people are going to take advantage of it.

I periodically check trade-in values of my devices. There are times when the values increase temporarily and I'll take advantage of it...

Best Buy will give me $250 for my 256GB iPad Mini 5 but Apple will only give me $185. This is why I usually trade-in at Best Buy rather than Apple. Especially when Best Buy is running a sale on an Apple device that I want to replace the traded in device with.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I have no desire to get rid of my Mini 5. :)

Apple didn’t change the prices. Apple‘s vendor changed their trade-in prices. This site needs journalists who will do a tiny amount of investigation instead of would-be writers who’re blogging their opinions.

Never resell your Apple products back to Apple, nor your GameStop games back to GameStop. They won't give you even close to market value because they want to maximize their profits while buying back the over-priced things they originally sold you.

Let's not be naive. Of course Apple sets the prices. All these devices go back to Apple. Guys like Phobio are just doing reverse logistics, just like Foxconn doing assembly.

Apple prefers everyone buy new 100% of the time. Apple wouldn't advertise and support a secondary market which undercuts new product demand unless they have control and make money from it.

In times of inflation used sale prices should also go up. I don‘t understand this service anyway. You will always get more money just selling it to everyone but Apple.
And Apple knows better than anyone else what their products are actually worth. Hey, wait…

The Mac trade in prices especially are insulting. At $275 for an MBA it's worth more as a computer.
Uhm, it is a computer. I think it’d be better to say it’s worth more as a doorstop than what Apple is offering. Or as a TV tray.

I mentioned that Apple's trade in for my M1 Mini 512/16 was 400 dollars. With a quick look on Craig's List (online buy/sell service) the lowest price was today 675 dollars. Yes no doubt Apple sell (product) high and buy (trade in) low is their on going motto.

I bought a used 11Pro three months ago, here in Korea. The value has gone up almost $100 on the used market. Go figure that. Used market here is exploding, and will only grow as Apple keeps dropping trade-in values. Everyone is preparing for price hikes on the new generation, after Japan saw a massive 20% price increase this week.

Apple has nothing to do with these prices; trade-ins are handled by a 3rd-party company and they set their prices.

Apple may use partners like Phobio but it is still Apple's trade-in program and they can still have control over the trade-in values. Apple could choose to provide extra trade-in credit as part of a promotion (as they did in May), they could adjust Phobio's "book value" up or down, etc. Phobio is used by a few companies but not all quoted trade-in values are necessarily the same.

That typically hasn't been the case in the U.S. but new Apple device prices are stable here, unlike Japan.

Resell sites here are selling iPhones for less than they were earlier in the year. Apple is selling refurbished iPhone 11 Pros today for less than they were in March.

Its like Apple can't win sometimes.

If they don't set the minimum trade-in value of a device then Apple is horrible for ripping off customers, but if Apple sets a higher minimum value then Apple is horrible for forcing companies to not meet their minimum profitability goals after processing the trade ins and disposing of the devices.

It's really simple, never use electronics trade-in if you want to get as much as possible for your old device. Trade-ins only give you convenience, not maximum value.

Yes, it can sometimes seem like a no-win situation. I think some people get too wound up about trade-in offers. No one is forced to trade with Apple or any other company.

Tons, sadly.

There are so many people who just don't know any better and/or are too lazy to try and sell it themselves.
Good job making assumptions.

I use Apple's trade-in program because I previously used eBay and got scammed by people claiming the product was different than the description. eBay sides with the buyer every time. So yeah, maybe the face value on eBay is higher but you also are at risk of being scammed and not having any recourse. I'll take a bit less and make it easy with Apple.

I won't use e-bay but have had great luck with an on line service "craig's list." Apple trades in my mini at 400 while lowest cost used Mini (same model) was 675. I would say 275 is reason to stay away from Apple's trade in.

I've been looking forward for the M2 Air to be available, and was intending on trading in my 2021 16-inch 16/512 M1 Pro MBP on it. I know, that might sound a little odd. But I find the usability of the MBP trackpad to be very poor, and I want a smaller one. Anyway, I looked on the Apple site and they aren't offering a trade in for 2021 models. For 2020 models they are, but the value they give you is $540. That's absurd. I checked SellYourMac and they'd give me $1495, and Swappa would give me $1800. So, my question is, how long will it be before Apple includes 2021 MBP models for trades on the M2 Air?

I've always had good luck with Apple when trading systems in, so I'd prefer not to go to other sites to sell it. But I also don't want to get ripped off by Apple, either.

I don't have any firm info on when they would do that but my suspicion is that it will be a while. I'd go ahead and sell it on Swappa. Whenever Apple does it, you won't get nearly the value that you're getting from Swappa and SellYourmac.

NICE APPLE.

Cut Trade in Values.

And increase your prices on NEW products.
Pretty sure a price increase is coming for models above the base model. The base model will be priced the same as last year.
Reading your post I fully sympathized with you until I came to your last sentence.

You are staying with Apple, iPhone and the upgrade program!!?? Do you enjoy abuse and being scammed? This is why Tim gets away with the crap he does. Customers (victims) get whacked with a big stick and then obediently hand over lots of money and ask to be hit again. Wow...
Apple has hundreds of millions of customers. Hard for entirety of the customer base to recognize what is going on. Gotta get those who throw money at apple to stop….but how? /s

However, rather than dealing with 3rd parties, I would still give my grade in to apple.
