Apple today introduced a new version of the Final Cut Pro software that's designed to run on the iPad, introducing capabilities designed specifically for the M4 iPad Pro.

A new Live Multicam feature allows users to capture up to four different angles of a single scene using connected iPhones and iPads. To make this feature work, Apple has created a Final Cut Camera app that captures video from each of the devices and feeds it into Final Cut Pro.

Users can get a director's view of each camera in real time, and the settings can be adjusted from the Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 app. There are options for tweaking exposure, focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and zoom to get the perfect shots. Preview clips are passed through to Final Cut Pro and then replaced with full-resolution files so users can quickly move from production to editing.

Final Cut Camera is available as a standalone app and in addition to feeding footage to Final Cut Pro, it can be used as a video capture app for recording video with precise manual controls.

The updated Final Cut Pro for iPad app supports external projects, so users can create or open projects on an external device and import media without taking up iPad storage space.

Apple added additional customization options to Final Cut Pro, including 12 color-grading presets, eight basic text titles, 20 soundtracks, and new dynamic backgrounds.

With the M4 chip, final rendering with Final Cut Pro is up to 2x faster, and it supports up to 4x more streams of ProRes RAW than the M1 chip. Final Cut for iPad works with the Apple Pencil Pro, adding support for barrel roll and squeeze, improving access to and control over tools.

Apple has also updated Final Cut Pro for the Mac, adding Enhance Light and Color, an AI feature that improves color, color balance, contrast, and brightness in one step. Smooth Slo-Mo, another new feature, blends frames of video intelligently to provide higher-quality movement.

Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 will be available this spring as a free update for existing users, with new users able to purchase it for $4.99 per month or $49 per year. Final Cut Camera will come later in the spring as well, and Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8 will be available as a free update for existing users.

Nice. FCPX gets some love! The camera apps looks great ... I can probably use that instead of the Blackmagic app. Will the camera app also work with FCPX running on macOS? Is the live multicam feature included with the FCPX update on macOS?

I am wondering this as well. The feature page on Apple's site strongly suggests not, but it isn't definitively stated one way or the other.

I don't think the new Final Cut Camera app will work with Final Cut on Mac out of the gate. If it did, Apple would make sure we knew about it (they don't seem shy about hiding big things like that). But I agree – that capability should and probably will make it to the Mac. And Apple will likely expand the number of cameras that can connect. Apple loves cross-promotion of its products, and this is a great reason for a small studio or creator to purchase even more iPhones.

The other Final Cut for iPad feature I really want to see come to Mac is dynamic music tracks, but Apple likely knows we're getting to the point where we can choose the kind of sound we want and AI will build a custom track per project. Eventually, you'll be able to import your footage and describe to the AI what kind of project you want it to build ("Magic Edit"). Then you'll get a fully-edited trailer or mini-documentary or promo-video using the footage you input.

I also find it notable that Apple says both Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 and Final Cut Camera will be "available later this spring" while Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8 "will be available as a free update" but gives no timeline. Is FCP for Mac imminent or coming alongside the next macOS update? If 10.8 did include ability to connect to Final Cut Camera on iOS devices, surely it would be launched simultaneously with its counterparts.

Further intriguing that Apple is labeling the nascent iPad version as "2" but holding back on announcing Mac version 11. Makes me think they have a bigger upgrade coming for the Mac (hopefully with text-based editing, which I was wishing for today). Still, I can't fear a future Mac FCP subscription enough. If anything, hopefully Apple will still enable the ability to purchase FCP for Mac outright, but Mr. Cook keeps seeing revenues grow from his services division.

The fact that the presentation was shot on iPhone BLOWS MY MIND.

We have some POWERFUL tech today, folks.

Take a second and appreciate it.
Pretty sure the last few presentations were shot using iPhones, I know the Scary Fast one announcing the M3s on Halloween was.

Anyone have any info on whether you can shoot ProRes Log on the new iPad Pros? I assume not, since I don’t see it listed in the specs. Wonder if that’s totally off the table for hardware reasons or if a software update could somehow make it possible in the future. If anyone has insight let me know, thanks.

But why would you use final cut pro on an iPad compared to capcut if the shooting device is an iPhone

🤨 Editing in Final Cut Pro on an iPad is an exercise in futility. Unless you’re doing a simple news package with some b-roll, or a cookie cutter social media post this wouldn’t be practical for anything else.

It’s sort of like the frustration you would experience 3D modeling on a MacBook Pro using only the trackpad [no mouse].

Really happy about the camera! I used to use the Filmic Pro & Filmic Remote, but I can't support Bending Spoons. (Awful company that has bought at least three companies and fired everyone in them. "We create cutting edge technologies and products" ...nah you don't)

Wondering if the fcp camera app for the iPhone will be available for third-party recording as apps.
The Movie Pro app has a controlling app when recording so not to touch the recording camera.
