God dawn it Strongbox has no windows support oh well. No big deal.

Though I like this option for it!
  • Strongbox Pro (Lifetime) $44.99

Thanks. What made you decide on Strongbox rather than 1Password?
1. Got tired of paying a yearly subscription (not that the price was too high). Strongbox has a good free version. I opted for the one time fee for Mac and iOS.
2. I like being able to talk directly to the developer of Strongbox and get a timely reply, versus 1Password, which seems to have struggled with customer support over the last 2 years. I wasn't happy with replies when I got one.
3. I didn't like my data being stored on 1Password servers versus the local hosting option (Apple iCloud storage or another cloud provider) with Strongbox.
4. I didn't like that doing a backup of my 1password vault didn't include everything.
5. I never did like having to log into 1Password on the web in order to change the vault password.
6. I found the Strongbox UI much more fluid and easier to navigate and use than 1Password
7. I like the new Strongbox features that allow you to set an app reminder to do a backup etc.
8. With Strongbox, I can set a PIN code in addition to Face ID for added security.

These are just a few of the reasons

Good points.

I would switch if they supported windows or at least try it.

Myself prefer lifetime licenses as well.

Plus all the features sound good.

1Password support has gone downhill ? That is news to me. Maybe I am wrong though.

As you found out, Strongbox is Apple only.

I got the lifetime Strongbox on sale (Mac and iOS) for less than $70, which I thought was a good deal.

Why do some developers only do Apple only do you know? Or does anyone know? Easier ? Better profits or what ?

I am going to ask them if they ever have windows support. Highly doubt it but does not hurt to ask.

Hmm I just found out about KeepassXC for windows to sync up with Strongbox interesting. This may work.

I do a LAN sync with 1Password so no data is stored on a server ever! Yes, I don't like the subscription model either. When you say a backup of my 1Password vault didn't include everything - what are you referring to?

I will give the free version a try and go from there.

Thank you for the information.

If I remember correctly, not all of the documents (or attached documents) that were a part of the personal vault could be backed up. I asked 1Password about this several times over the years and they kept punting the tech ball away with no resolution, which I found frustrating.

In the early days, (pre sub) I was very pleased with 1Password. The longer I went with the sub, the less happy I was. I still think it is a good product. However, I also believe there is quality competition (as mentioned) that can aptly fill the need without the increased Teams / Business focus with a sub model.

I have great news Stronghold just emailed me back saying they plan in the future to expand to Android and Windows!

Though there is no ETA :(

Honestly even if it takes 5 years I will be happy.

Wonder if I bought a lifetime license now it would cover the windows version too in the future ? Hmmm

The only reason thinking about it now before hand is because they could remove the lifetime option sooner or later. A lot of software companies do this nowadays. They don't offer both anymore. Not all just some of course.

I agree with you about the sub model. I think now all the notes and attached documents are backed up, so perhaps they added that feature later.

At $36, what does 1Password have that Bitdefender, at $10, does not?
For me, a nicer UI and larger team behind it to support it including a focus on Mac development.

BitWarden is good and great for the price, but many find 1Password the nicer to use app on Apple devices. More importantly when I tried BitWarden it had bugs on Safari for Mac which caused the vault to always lock after 30 seconds irrespective of what I’d set it to. I was being forced to manually unlock the vault every time I needed to do password entry. Due to the small dev team (at the time 1 person) and the fact Safari Mac is a niche browser compared to Chrome in terms of market share, fixing the issue wasn’t the top priority. Might be fixed now, but at the time I didn’t accept the “workaround” being proposed in Reddit etc that users should change browser to Chrome.

Again bitwardens a great product, but so is 1Password and I find the Apple experience and support better with Agile Bits product. I’d still recommend BitWarden to people, especially if they were using common OS and browsers. The free tier is especially generous.

I like how Apple does not awards the most popular or the highest revenue app but awards the most innovative and creative ideas to create something new and different.

1Password is the best $36 I spend each year. Well deserved!

I have the license, but I agree its worth it. It really does make your life better but I learned that having one player in the market is dangerous so I am hoping others are using alternative apps like Last Pass, BitWarden, and whatever is out there.

Maybe others are similar or better, I honestly never gave it a try. One thing that makes me stick with 1password is the great support.

1Password still have a « regular » (not yearly) license.

I have it since about 10 years. I guess it is time for an update! I was thinking that with my new M1 I would need to upgrade but it still works. I think I’ll update anyway.

One thing I dislike about some of these password managers is they try to combine too much stuff. Like document storage, VPN, ant-virus to justify the ongoing subscription price.

I just like that no matter which ”iDevice” I am on it just works.
