Hard disagree. The iPhone 6 model design was horrible to use in the hand. No hard sides to hold on to and a slippery as soap back.

LOL. I guess Mr. Bean wasn’t available. But seriously, every time I see him in an article I’m HOPING he’s stepping down. Please do the right thing Jony, leave! Your best days are long behind you.

Under his leadership Apple has put out some of the most iconic and easy to use designs in the technology space that the world has ever seen. The guy designed the iMac, iPod, MacBook, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. These are legendary designs that have been copied time and time again. So let's assume Jony boy leaves Apple. Do you think their designs will get better or worse than their baseline average of "best in the world"?

I think you’ve forgotten about Scott Forstall. Apple is in need of someone like him - to bring in some innovation, for once, and to stop milking the cow. IMO get rid of Cook and Ive.

Hardware. He should have stuck to hardware. He has made a complete mess of the iOS interface.

Have you guys even gone back to look at iOS 6 interface design? Let us take a walk down memory lane.

Check out that stitching! Marker felt that is hardly legible with cartoon icons. Forstall was a design guru.

What a hot mess. Moving on, we'll take a look at some leathery Find My Friends!

Are you freaking kidding me? This is what you guys missed? The typography is a jumbled mess. The skeuomorphic interface mixed with non-matching UI elements is atrocious. The friend list is cramped and cluttered. Let's see what else I can dig up.

Oh yeah! Who can forget Forstall's lead effort on developing Apple Maps. That worked out fabulously. Nobody had any problems at all with that app.

And who can forget the beautiful Siri interface? A weird mash-mash of linen, glossy glass, and shiny metal with text that you could barely read. But you guys are definitely right…

We could all use more linen in our life! Please forgive me, as I bow down before the design prowess of Scott Forstall and his majestic linens of wonder. If only Jony hadn't ballsed up this elegant design…

EPIC post!
Love the visual aids, for those misrecollecting...
You really drove your point home.
Didn’t even get to few of the worst offenders: Game Center, which was green felt lined, to look like a billiards table I guess- didn’t really jive with the main games people played being Angry Birds & Plants vs. Zombies. And compass, which definitely looks cleaner, more informative/accurate with a clean & modern interface, rather than a cheesy digital rendering of a wood, glass, & metal antique compass.

Don't remind me of iOS 6, it's so homey and comfortable - I miss interacting with that on my device so much lol. I never liked the grey background of the notification shade though, not good for legibility. Looks industrial which I like, but not with text in front of it.

I agree with you, but the iPhone 6 generation was really bad and would’ve stayed that way except they had to move to glass for wireless charging so yea it’s a big miss. Overall though yes his design philosophy and attention to detail is instilled with his team and hopefully continues when he leaves.

I think Scott’s philosophical idea was users understanding how to use the product which could have evolved over time. Certainly I think from a technical stand point he was better than current leadership. It’s akways easy to say what if vs. what is but I’ll stick with Apple vs what’s out there. I can’t leave anyway. I’m stuck forever with iMessage :)

Well, idk about that & have never heard that he was all that pivotal in iOS in its entirety.
However, I am aware of the IMMENSE contributions of hardware specialist, Bob Mansfield, who comes across as a big sweet teddy bear & was effectively pushed out of Apple by the horrible and caustic attitude of Forstall.
When he retired Tim faced an “insurrection” at Apple. He was a well-loved & integral part of Apple and only agreed to come back AFTER Forstall was ousted.
Forstall was known for crowing to others (while Steve was still alive!!) how “Steve would never do this”, etc. , even though he had known Steve for a shorter period than virtually any other high-level employee he’d deal with.
Further, he was the only member of the software team cocky enough to refuse to take any heat over the Maps debacle & wouldn’t sign the apology note that everyone else signed.
Steve gave away untold amounts of free bumpers over “antennagate”.
Forstall seems to have fancied himself the 2nd coming of Steve... with none of the people skills, a sliver of his genius, and the worst of his attitude traits x1000.
He was tearing Apple apart.
I haven’t heard he’s missed at the company- only by a few fanboys who have inexplicably put him on a pedestal.

Omg, a carbon fiber Watch & iPhone option would be stellar! =)
Scott was the the guy that lead the team that produced designed and produced iOS! Clearly a gifted programmer, its reported that during arguments about software, he would sit down and write code to prove his point. He may well have been arrogant, but he has the skills to back it up. He probably put a few noses out of joint by being able to demonstrate why they were wrong.

I am sure Bob Mansfield is a nice guy, but in business, that's not really important. Take Jobs and Wozniack, Jobs was clearly the better business man, but Wozniac is clearly the better human. Bob may be an Apple employee again, but is no longer on the Executive team.

And to those mocking the dated iOS 6 and before. It was a different time. People then needed to be led into this new age, skeuomorphic was the way to get the masses to be able to interact with the new technology. iOS under Scott would have evolved, anyway during his tenure the look of iOS would have been closely controlled by Jobs.

There are plenty of problems with the look (and functionality) of iOS. But if Apple allowed us more customisation, I think many more users would be far happier, for me, I hate the white, white and more white of the recent iOS, especially notes. Surely it can't be beyond Apple to let me chose page and text color?

I guess that means you won’t be attending his lecture when you go to Cambridge then?
You couldn't pay me enough to sit and listen to this windbag. Although I wouldn't mind going so I could ask him how it feels to destroy iOS, Mac OSX, the MacBook (pro and others), the Mac Pro, the iMac etc....

I am more than happy to forget this guy. From my perspective Apple immediately improved upon his departure.

Ugh.
I had almost forgotten about him... wish you hadn’t brought him up. =/

What a tool.

watcha sayin? He invented iOS, a completely new way of interacting with a device which changed the lifestyle of billions of people around the world (Android was a copy of his work/ideas/concept), without him we wouldn't have iPhones and Androids, or modern smartphones. Ive just makes pretty products. Without Forstall we would have a big, but pretty, iPod with a cell phone antenna.

That thing wasn't Ive's design, well sort of. Only the exterior. But what truly changed the industry was on the inside, designed by a guy who was fired because of his conflicts with Ive. If there's one guy you should thank for the iPhone, it should be Scott Forstall not Jony Ive.

Excuse me, but Scott Forstall designed iOS. Concepts you all love like the homescreen, app-based operative system, keyboard-less full screen interface, scroll screen with fingers (not using a scroll bar), multi-touch, app opening animations, slide to unlock, etc. In other words, all modern smartphones people use world wide are using his (and his team's) concepts.

Here are some pictures of what smartphones looked like before Scott Forstall:

Lol, so if I lead a team that creates an operating system- I “invented” the operating system??

Interesting opinion!
One I don’t share... & I don’t imagine many would- but interesting nonetheless.

So if Jony Ive leads a team of designers that means he didn't design the product?

I know you think you’re being clever or whatever... but actually- I do strongly believe that the days when Jony sat down & drew/planned out 90+% of all the designs are well over.
YES. I believe that design at Apple currently is overseen by Jony, but he doesn’t personally design each and every device anymore!
However, he certainly did at one time... and has won MANY awards for things he designed before and during his Apple tenure.
Lol, do you imagine that he has his team working on those designs??
Further.... while we’re pushing this comparison- can you please post some of Scott’s personally written code that was so brilliant & stood out so much that it was added to museums, et al?

What makes you think I'm being clever? I used the same logic you didn't agree with. At apple, Jony has always worked alongside a team of designers, you are wrong if you think he designed, say, the iPhone himself alone. That still makes him the designer of the iPhone, just as Scott is the inventor of iOS.

Regarding the last paragraph, it doesn't work that way in the software development industry. His biggest success is iOS (and Android indirectly), Apple put two groups to design the iPhone OS and iOS is what he came up with.

Well, respectfully- we’ll just have to agree to disagree! =)

People shy away from it, but I honestly wonder why there isn't an iPhone back made from a good grade of plastic ...

I feel it boils down to consumers' preconceived notions. Material snobbery?

Anyway, back on point: Ive absolutely deserves this recognition. He's done more than anyone in modern history to move the design needle - although he has been coasting a bit recently and just recycling ideas.

I think he should leave Apple and start afresh. For his own sake. And Apple's. Before it gets too stale.

Hard disagree. The iPhone 6 model design was horrible to use in the hand. No hard sides to hold on to and a slippery as soap back.
And don’t forget the ugly thick white antenna lines.
But Steve frequently sided with Ive. Case in point the iPhone 4. The engineers actually pointed out the risk of antenna attenuation with the design, yet Jobs sided with Ive and went ahead with the design. The rest of antennagate is history.

Yeah, but understand this: These interfaces that you have embedded above were cutting edge mobile UI/UX design at the time. They were still awful, and many of them were originally developed in the 90s. The problem? These companies kept with the same old staid style and hardly updated them. They kept employing the same designers to do the same things. When iOS 6 came out, Apple was only going down a path of even more skeuomorphism. They reigned that in and changed course with iOS 7 to modernize and clean up the OS. While iOS 7 had some of it's own problems (such as typography that was way too thin in many places and some legibility issues), but it was quickly refined in the coming years. Scott deserves credit for the early work, but that can only get you so far or you get left behind. The work that Jony's team has done since then has only exponentially propelled Apple to new heights. I think they're doing OK without Forstall. If they had kept their course, you could say that the above UI was to iPhone as iPhone would be to Google's material design—they would be wrecked.
