Curved glass has to be the next major step, so classy. In the future maybe some sort of material that serves as a screen without the use of glass at all.

That looks terrible IMO... I really liked my original Iphone. And it was pretty expensive since there was no carrier subsidy, so keeping costs down where they could was a great idea.

Glad they thought twice about printing "MENU" on the home button.

The first one looks pretty slick imho, reminds me on a cooler Vertu version. I'd buy that.

I'd buy that first image anyday. Way better than current iPhone

Would the LCD behind the curved glass stay flat?
Depending on the amount of curve and glass thickness I would think that would make navigation/usability I little more difficult.

Well Apple lost my favor in the iPhone 4/4s, I think it is the most poorly sharp-edged ergonomic design for a phone I have ever held!@!

I sure hope the iPhone 5 is easier on the hards and more comfortable to hold.

Wouldn't a phone with a curved screen be much easier to break if it dropped and landed on the curved part of the phone. Not sure I like this idea. Seems way too complicated just for aesthetic reasons. The frame can be curved, but not the glass itself IMO. Who knows what the next iPhone will bring though.

I like the look off the iPhone 4/4s, looking forward to what comes with the next iPhone

"oh and we realized it looked like crap." missed that pars :D
I think people overlook how sexy the curret iPhone looks. And the next iPhone, getting rid of the speaker grooves, even better :)

I agree. Are everyone's dusty and dirty??

i sort of agree, it feels good at first but my fingers always start to hurt after a while. the 3G/S curved back was by far more comfortable to hold

I didn't really have much problem with my iPhone 3G... which was curved more heavily than that pic

It's a classic example of "oh, Apple rejected it? It must suck." It could be that Apple rejected some of these designs for technical reasons, like, making a phone out of curved glass would be even easier to break than the iPhone 4. I personally don't mind the curved glass look.

EDIT: I mean, think about it. That glass is pretty much reaching out to touch somebody, or some very hard surface.

Glad they never went with this one.

Why do some of these designs look so bad? You just have to look at them to pass.

I thought Apple would have some with different cameras or larger screen sizes to test than all these horrible early models?

Maybe they even tried a 3GS with a retina display lol?

They didn't patent the rectangle. They patented a design that looks very much like an iPhone.

Yeah, I never understood why people assumed Apple patented a "rectangle"? Is it ignorance or just being lazy that they don't do any further reading to realize that trade dress involves the entirety of a design not one single element.

Personally, I think it's blind hatred that prevents people from being reasonable.

Nokia managed to do curved glass on N9 and Lumia 800 and they both turned out awesome.

Yea but.......Nokia is not exactly lightening up the sales charts so it doesn't matter how "awesome" they are if they are mass market duds!

seems like it would crack easily... Don't really see any added benefit

Yeah, and I don't see why anyone would want a rounded touch screen.

Is it only me who thinks the curved glass looks phantastic?

It does look good, but seriously, a curved touch screen??? That would be very annoying. It works on the Nano since it's not a touch screen.

Yes. Samsung's Nexus is a perfect example of how they could easily make a decent phone that looks nothing like the iPhone. It's one of the best Android phones out there, too. The whole "Apple patented the only real designs!" thing is bogus. Although certain design elements were clearly inspired by the iPhone.

Jony Ive made the iPhone feel so luxuries against my ear that I'd rather sleep on it than a pillow.

I've got the dumbest question about the curved glass...why does the glass curve outward instead of inward...wouldn't that hug your face a bit more?

Am I thinking backwards?

Curved glass in the back would actually be really cool. But then you couldn't set it down on a table. iPhone 4/4S still has a great design IMO, almost perfect...I don't know what the point in changing it now would be.

I don't like the Nexus, but I could respect why someone would. So yes, it's a clear example of how someone could design a good phone that didn't copy the iPhone.

Way to think outside the box. But a concave shape would require the overall phone to be thicker. Component thickness kind of dictates the middle, but the edges could taper smaller. With a concave phone the middle thickness would be an absolute, based on what thickness is needed to house the components. And the edges would then need to be even thicker to create the concave effect.

It is odd I always pictured aplle works on phone designs one after another. The designed the iPhone, then 3g, 4, 5 etc. It seems that apple actually designed all of them at the same time. Some prototypes have looked like unevolved versions of iphone, 4, and expected 5. So it seems they are probably working on all these designs at once and release the most finished feeling one every two years. These designs were all started a bunch of years ago. We also haven't seen prototypes for anything that looks past the 5 design wise. This could mean that the more recent unreleased prototypes will be the iPhone 6, 7, etc.
