Just the right balance is important for me. Too much of both is not ideal. I'm hoping Apple keeps this balance and the new MBP's are just about right IMO...until technology allows for virtually invisible gadgets that are functional.

All I can think is that the notch exists on the iPhone because of hardware constraints. If it doesn’t exist on the iPad Pro, there’s exactly zero reason they couldn’t do without it on the new MacBook Pro.
Zero reason, other than the perpetual moaning of the great unwashed who can't cope with laptops having a bezel (personally, I'm totally indifferent—the bezel has never bothered me).

If you want a narrow bezel and a camera, then the notch is a good solution since, in the way they've implemented it, it only actually uses the bezel space for the menu bar, the centre of which has never had any real use. The main area of the screen—the 16:10 part—is below the notch. Only the menu bar is interrupted by the notch.

Interesting point about Apple post-Ive. Looking at the new MPBs I think this is kind of a good thing, since we've finally got the kind of pro machine we needed, in terms of specs. However, I do think they should be careful about this, and not forget that innovative design and UX is part of the company DNA.... Tricky balance to strike, imho. Ive went too far, in the later years, but they should try to avoid not going far enough, if possible.

They just flipflop styles, else they would not have anything to offer. In 3 years we get round edges iPhones again, and in 7 years we get flat edges iPhones again. Same with ports and MacBook form, it looks like a 2012 MacBook.

Lot of assumptions of function over form. I say notch is for controversy, dialogue amongst user community. Free popularity one way or the other. I am hoping to be able to turn the menu bar background entirely dark. I don't know how.

Edit: never mind. Figured out how to turn menu bar black using black wallpaper. That will take care of notch for the most part.

Let's blame Johnny. Nice.
Instead of actually using his head to write something insightful he's gone for a cheap shot and sensationalism.
Like some cheap glossy gossip mag.
He could have questioned if there has been a shift in the balance of power within Apple.
Have the days when the product designers, had the last word and marketing knew when to shut up, gone?
Yes it went too far and MagSafe should never have been scrapped.
However look at where it took the company to and where Apple is today because of the power that group has/had.
Now, like some old music artists who isn't writing new stuff, we're getting "The Greatest Hits".
My iPhone 13 looks like a blown up version of my iPhone 4 and iPhone 5s.
Johnny Ive's greatest hits.

I suppose that the bezel is back as soon as you go full screen. But this may rain the best trade-off.

They probably planned for the MBP to have the full Face ID sensor array, but ran into supply chain issues, and choose to ship the design freeze rather than wait another eight months for all components. I'm sure the next round of laptops will have FID.

Apple is where it is today because of Jony Ive. He designed products that not only were functional but also that people actually craved. That is no small feat.
Well, not that I could have done better than Jony, but look at music players, phones, and laptops before around 2005.

There was a lot of low-hanging fruit that Jony & Steve smartly exploited as far as inserting some industrial design prettiness that made apple products stand out. But more than their looks, they WORKED so much better than the competition. Perfect storm/timing. Even the idea of receiving a product nearly fully charged out of the box was new. Or a laptop without mis-aligned graffiti, I mean stickers, by Intel, IBM, nvidia, etc. near the keyboard.

Our cravings were largely set in the 00’s when Steve & Jony’s teams fixed a lot of easy pickings and Apple products Just Worked while they looked good. They fixed obvious things that should have been obvious to the competition but apparently were not.

Then Jony’s teams started trying too hard to make products look good’er than the prior year to where many leaders were blind to function often taking a hit for the sake of glitzy marketing showing something thinner and lighter than last year.

I don't get all the hate for the notch, it barely affects anything. While it may be an aesthetic nuisance it hardly changes function of any device brandishing the feature. Now if it were a trade off, like a rear view mirror attached to the dash verses the windshield. Or a light switch attached to the floor verses the wall, it would make sense for the dismay. But for what it is, it barely is worthy of so much needless, and frightful criticism. It is indeed a true nothing burger moment.

I've never met an "arcitect, musician. or filmmaker" who isn't smart enough to buy a $12 USB-C to HDMI cable from amazon

10000% this. we have a thicker laptop with useless ports because of pure, pathetic laziness, and the hdmi port isnt even up to current standard that has existed for over a year.

“can even connect it to a 4k tv” - sure, and i cant drive 4k120 over the hdmi port because they chose the old revision.

the sd card reader is whatever. the hdmi port is easily blamed on nonsensical caterwauling from technical geriatrics who cant be bothered to use minimal dongles and cables we all have already.

Ive was good with Jobs as counterpart. Alone he is not a capable. Just listen to any interview – he has nothing relevant to say. Neither as a designer nor as a human being.

Cook had to wait to get rid of him, since he needed the criticism from the media and the customers to 'let him go'. Had he done it a year or two after Jobs' passing while Ive was still misinterpreted as a guru, he would have been tarred and feathered... Cook impresses me. He solved this problem without anybody really noticing it.
What?! If you read what you're saying again, then you'll realise that you're basically saying that Ives was a genius, but it took another genius like Steve as counterpart to override the less functional ideas, and thus, that Tim is no genius and has no idea. Tim couldn't handle Ives' genius ways, so instead of taking ultimate blame for bad products and falling on his own sword, he fired a long serving genius instead.

Apple started caving to the mob since Ive left. Everything thicker and heavier, obsolete ports being put back… the golden era of Apple design has gone. We’re headed towards being Dell with a notch. But hey the YouTubers will be happy, so…
True, whoever likes the ports should go with those PC laptops. In my opinion, they slow down the ecosystem to evolve into the new type-c era . They got plenty of ports, even the mDP port. John and Steve had re-defined and re-designed many things and pushed the entire ecosystem to move forward with much faster pace. I know many people are unable to catch up their pace but technology should move forward regardless and simplify itself. I see nothing wrong with USB-C or TB ports only Macs. At some point, this world will only have usb-c or TB ports and you dont have to worry about what dongles to bring and what cable to carry. It's pity that Apple lost their patience and brought obsolete ports back and guess what it will delay the evolution and eventually Apple will have to use more powerful CPU/GPU and more memory, and of course, customers have to pay more, to compete with Intel base PC laptops or MS's ARM base machines. Yeah, I know, M1 Max and Pro are way powerful than any Intel's ones, that' probably the only good thing for this year and next year - maybe. lol.

The sales and marketing people have taken the company.

There has been no significant innovations in any product in years. Bringing back ports is no innovation, just going backwards.

Pure laziness?

Some people are OK carrying around a lighter laptop and misc cables/dongles. Some people prefer carrying around a slightly heavier laptop and no need to track/carry video dongles/adapters. Simple as that.

Aye. 'Useless ports' just for a few guys like Eorlas. The majority of pro users hate dongles for a good reasons. Barely anyone needed 4 TB ports at once (and one was occupied for charging anyway). Now we have 3 TB ports + Magsafe + HDMI* + SDCX. Certainly more flexible for >90% of all users. Also the devices didn't get thicker because of the ports, but the new cooling system, bigger speakers and batteries. Actually the 14" got thinner. Nice self-own, dude.

*) It caters to TVs, projectors and office monitors, thus 2.1 is simply not needed. Also bandwitch limitations simply doesn't allow more. If you want 120Hz, use one of your 3 TB ports, volia.

And those noobs complaining about that notch, you still didn't get that it enables extra screen estate rather than 'taking anything away'. Did you even watch the keynote? You get extra 74 vertical pixels. Disable that area = black pixels and you're back to the standard 16:10 display with the old bezel. It isn't the most beautiful solution but in technical aspects the best and most flexible one, to maximize screen space combined with a good 1080p camera.

I wish more people would actually think first or do some research before posting their silly rants or smileys.

Any financial analyst like this one always gets Apple 100% wrong. They are total greedy idiots that plan their investment strategy around the articles they write, taking advantage of both bad or even good articles, because they know it will move the stock price. All fluff pieces to manipulate stocks, should be illegal, but it’s not. After all they are only “opinion” pieces.
