To be fair, there's more to compatiblity than just using the same app. I've seen Word documents that haven't come across from one computer to another because the two computers don't have the same fonts installed. So, complaining about fonts is a completely different issue.

I usually use iWork Pages for my word processing. Most of the time that I need to share a document, I use PDFs. On the rare occasion that I need to share with someone in an editable format, I will use Word.

Now, all of that said, I'm not trying to say that I'm the norm, simply trying to suggest that iWork isn't so completely incompatible with a work environment as some of the proclamations here would make it seem. It really only depends on what the people in charge of the standards for a given company decides to use.

which is very true, but then why pay for a crippled product?

for cross platform stuff and better compatibility just use Open Office.

Its better than iWork (on Win or Mac) in every way and its free.

Err... because nobody uses it? Because it's worthless and nobody will pay for it? (Ya think?)

And what do you mean "stop" charging? It's always been free yet still hasn't caught on. What does that tell you?

Son, now you're just throwing handfuls of crap at a wall and hoping some will stick.

It's been free for 2 YEARS and nobody uses it. It's not "idea" that puts this notion on the trash heap.... it's the product it's built upon.

Wow, your post is......just WOW. First of all, what I meant by "stop" charging is Apple has not charged for iWork.com all of this time and they could have just as they have for Mobileme. Secondly what do you meant by "worthless"? It's cloud computing and the whole concept of cloud computing is still in it's infancy other than e-commerce. The majority of Apple's ideas certainly have been successful so just because you have zero interest in iWork.com doesn't make it worthless.

And thanks for that really mature response on the portion that I highlighted. At least I can respond to your post without rude and insulting remarks.

w/o editing, this is pretty pointless, at least for me. If I were to use this to 'share' something, the only response would be, why not just send me it as an attachment in an email.

What if the person you are sending to doesnt have iWork?

to me this is great exept the keynote cant go full screen in safari (at lest on Mac).

Then why use the word "stop" which implies it had previously started? Whatever...

Again, you don't read. I said the idea of Apple's cloud is not at fault. It's the notion to put iWork in it and expect the throngs users to embrace it simply because Apple did it.

The majority of Apple's ideas certainly have been successful
That's right. And "Ping" will take off any day now.

so just because you have zero interest in iWork.com doesn't make it worthless.

And like Apple, you don't get it. It's not *me* that has no interest in iWork. Myself and a gazillion others have no choice but to use industry standards which help companies earn revenue. iWork, in its current manifestation has no market share in this endeavor.

Apple should just acquire OpenOffice or NeoOffice and just get on with it.

Oh, please. I tried to use Open Office on and off for years. It was never a viable alternative to MS Office. It may have better compatibility than iWork, but the UI is exceptionally weak compared to iWork.

Haha agreed. The open-source community is always going on about Open Office but the reality is some things are just done better with experience.

at Janet and John level maybe...

for real work use it isn't compatible.

Even basic Word formatting screws up with headers and footers etc.
For real work, Office isn't Office compatible. I can't tell you the number of times I've used iWork to open an Office document that my (different) version of Office couldn't cope with.

I keep office around as a safety blanket, and for Excel (Numbers is still a toy), but all my work is done in Pages/Keynote and I interact with the corporate world just fine.
