I am on DP8...what happens now that my dev account expired yesterday. Do I have to renew it for apple to get new updates?

You have to renew to get updates manually. However the Mac App Store will transition your computer onto the Gold Master when it is eventually released.

My Mac developer account expired some time in July, I've still been receiving DPs through the Mac App Store however.
