This is at least an innovation which would make sense, unlike those silly "wireless" charging pads. Who cares if it's wireless if you still have to place the phone in a certain area? Plugging a phone in does not stress me out.

So you would like the wireless charging removed form the Apple Watch, so you have to have a wire, and plug the end of the wire into a socket on the watch ever night?

That's what you are saying.... Yes?

Well, the S model is supposed to fix any shortcomings with the non-S model. That's why some people only get that model. I can definitely see that as a 7s secondary new feature that will address the continued relatively poor battery life with the iPhone 7 in addition to allowing people to both listen to their music while wirelessly charging. Apple has to give people a good reason to get the s-model again.

...orrrrr this brand new, not-fully-realized-yet technology simply might not be ready for prime time mass market deployment in 2016.

Geez. Does everyone on the Internet have to be so damn cynical and jaded?

Interesting tech, would be cool, and apple would get it right.

My concern would be, that many many years down the track they discover health concerns, especially if the industry as a whole picks this up, Samsung will follow very quickly.....

after whittling away its battery capacity to achieve thinness that NO ONE ASKED FOR,

Every year the iPhone has got thinner, and every year sales numbers have increased. That's a clear indication to Apple that they're doing what the consumer wants.

The problem with people like you (loads of my friends and my wife are the same) is you moan and complain about the iPhone, but you still go and buy one.

Range Gate!
And how much electricity will be wasted with this new way of charging appliances?

For this technology to be useful we need a standard, so you can charge pretty much everything and it is ok to have pads in the house and office as long as you can put every appliance you have (phone, tablet, smartwatch, mouse, laptop, electric shaver...).
With the thin iPhones we have wireless charging would mean less room for the battery, so we'd lose battery life and be forced to charge them often. We'd do it wirelessly, but frequently and you can't have charging pads everywhere if there isn't a standard.

And wireless charging would not mitigate the idiotic removal of the headphone jack, which means you can't charge your phone and listen to music .

Yes you can. I have been doing that for years without using the headphone jack not even once. And I won't be missing that a bit. Just as I don't miss the removable battery or the SD slot, DVD drive and other stuff people used to cry for.

I agree, I hate the fragile lightning connectors. They "turtle neck" and fray VERY easily for me, even though they literally never leave the outlet they're plugged into. But be prepared for the following incoming comments:

"What are you doing with your chargers that causes them to break so soon?????"
"I've had my Lightning charger for (insert years) and it's still PERFECT!"
"Don't abuse your cord and you won't have this problem."

They are true though.

Pull out the cable using the hard plastic as opposed to yanking at the cable itself.

It's not about just plugging in a phone... it's about the convenience of being able to pick up and put down a phone for charging without needing to worry about the effect on a charging cable...and being able to do this repeatedly. For example: I have a charging cable leading up to my nightstand (as I assume most posters here do) and I plug in my phone and iPad at night. But like most folks, I like to surf while in bed and also check information (weather, appointments) when I wake up. Having a wireless charging pad makes it alot easier for me to pick up my iPhone/iPad and surf in bed without worrying about cables. I also don't need to worry about yanking out the lightning cable in the morning when I go to pick up my phone to shut off the alarm or to read. Yes, I can get a longer charging cable, but it can still get caught on the edge of my night stand or interfere with other objects (like knocking down the lamp on the night stand).

It's also about decluttering an area by removing wires. My wife and I have numerous iDevices and we have a charging area in our kitchen on one of our counters. Even though we have AC outlets that have USB ports in them, it's still a cluttered mess with the cables. Wireless charging would present a clean look (and would help us avoid getting each others cables and iDevices tangled with each other).

Count me in the camp of looking forward to wireless charging!

This is exciting news. I've been waiting for a viable alternative to wired charging as current "wireless" charging is a step backwards from using wires.

I hope they keep wires as an option for a few more years though and let us transition smoothly.

No, because you wouldn't really want to use a smartwatch if it's set down charging, regardless of how it's charging.

A smartphone is a different kettle of fish entirely. People use them when they are charging, and so having to set it on a plate is a hindrance because you cannot hold it while it's charging.

Must be treating the cables pretty rough. I've been using the same lighting cable that came with my iphone 5 to charge every new iphone and ipad and no damage yet. Can't wait for wireless charging though.

I have a charger upstairs which I never move. I have an iPhone with a case that covers the ports so no dust gets in. I'm am beyond careful with my stuff. I'm OCD about my devices. My charger upstairs often doesn't charge on first connection. I've checked it it's clean. It also wouldn't connect my iPad to my Mac. The lead from downstairs does not have this issue. My conclusion given how I use my chargers and devices is these Lightning connected cords are not the strongest or most reliable things I've seen. They may need to be toughened up. Especially at the joints and connections.

Proper wireless charging so you can use your phone whilst charging would be a boon, but I doubt whether it can be achieved. And if it can, I would worry about the health implications. Wouldn't something so powerful need to be tested for several years in order to verify its safety?

I'd prefer Apple to simply make their phones a little thicker and increase the battery life to 15 hours.

You would think that the console manufacturers would have implemented this first.
If nothing else; simply to have a small 'buffer' battery and continuously supply power over the air.

What you need is a sender and receiver operating on the same unusual frequency go from there. It can be achieved.

First demonstrated by MIT ~10 years ago:

Even a contact based charger like Apple Watch is super convenient. I would love extended range charger, provided it does not significantly add charging time (about 2 hours more should be the limit for full charge).

not really, how would you keep using it without the iPhone keep falling off of it or charging it from your powerbank on the go

on the other hand lightning cables suck too, theybreak so easily! i still got the ones of the older iPhone 3G etc generation working perfectly but the lightning ones always break. at least Apple always replaces them, they dont even bother to ask what happened. i guess they are aware that their cables suck lol

And THAT came after the headphone fiasco of the first iPhone. Remember how the original iPhone's headphone jack was inexplicably buried at the bottom of a hole, making it incompatible with 99 percent of the headphones out there? Again, Apple had to scrap that blunder in the next generation.

exactly - have a look at the battery case - it has the same deep hole - passive aggressive narcissism - do it the way we say or pay for your impertinence.

Take care of your cables?
I'm pretty sure you know what condescending means - the next word you need to learn is sanctimonious.
