Steve did throw a digital camera off the stage last July!

"The market is already glutted with plenty of fine digital cameras"

I disagree. I've had a few Nikons and tried the Canons and they all have their + and -'s; I'm not 100% satisfied with any one of them.

Plus, I want Firewire. I know Lexar now has a FW reade but that's an extra step and I hate Sony because of their proprietary 'schtick'.

It'd be real tough to keep up with the market though...

still have one

we even still have one of those ... (quicktake 150 that is)

proves again that apple is mostly 5 years ahead of everyone ... unfortunatley also ahead of most of their own endusers ... sigh

I have both a quicktake 100 and a 150, I beleve that the close up lenz will work on both tho i will have to check on that. I will also get to work on getting pics of both of them up. Perhaps I will pic all of my mac stuff, some older and uniqe stuff.

I'd love to see an Apple branded camera. Problem is this though, even though I am an avid Mac user and fan and have been for over 18 years, how good could the picture quality actually be. Kodak and other photo heavyweights have digital cameras that are great and are starting to come down in price. Apple could make a great product that is easy to use, but how about pricing??? The best tool for them would be to have Kodak or Nikon create the camera with them and just slap the Apple logo on it. Of course, this is only my opinion.

Re: No chance...no market niche...

I can't find a hole in the digital camera market. I love my Canon G1, and my Canon Elura. There is nothing that Apple would bring to the market that would be specifically Apple.

There is no "problem" that needs solving, no unique angle that I can think of that Apple could take.

Apple is good at making us realize the problems that we never knew were there. I'm sure that if they did release one it would solve all the little problems that we just live with every day and don't think twice about. What about a possible partnership with Kodak? They are producing the iPhoto prints for Apple, why not a digital camera with a HD instead of compact flash and a firewire interface or a monsterous LCD screen. I wouldn't put it past them. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a tapeless video camera with an internal HD on board with some new form of compression. I think that Steve will finish out the digital hub that he created. He is known for creating charts and filling in the blanks. His digital hub chart has a few holes in it.

Tossing Quicktakes off the stage.

I'll tell ya, if Steve had a QuickTake (either the 100 or the 150) on that day (and I was there and just cringed for the poor assistant) he'd throw those off stage without even turning them on.

They were cool years ago, because there just wasn't much out there...and what was out there was very high priced. They quickly became junk because technology moves on, and Apple couldn't afford to keep up with that end of things. I had them both at my educational institution, and my kids had some fun with them, but they ate batteries for lunch, had a goofy memory stick card thing where the pics were stored, and in the case of the 100, you were never sure if it took a picture because of the poor feedback. Both of them laid on the shelf within a year of purchase. There's simply so much choice out there now and it would be a waste of resources to put another one out on the racks.

Oh, and that camera that Steve tossed off the stage? The batteries weren't recharged...it was dead. And so, I assume, was the hapless assistant that he angrily threw it to after the show.
