I dont think this is that impressive

i live in japan and tried out nintendo's try to make exercising a little to do wit electronics(Wii Fit) wasn't that great. It was fun but not a good way to exercise!

But it could be pretty cool dont know yet im just sharing my opinion:)

Very cool, especially if I can strap it to my arm and it uses the accelerometer to count my reps!

That would be kinda cool. I'm kinda PO'ed by the fact the the current Nike+iPod kit is for iPod Nanos only. I have an iPhone and a U2 iPod and Apple's stance is "Sorry, you have to buy more of our products to do what you want." With, the U2 iPod, w/ the hard drive, it might skip while exercising. & with the iPhone, kinda expensive and some might not want to risk damaging it. But what about the people who don't care about that stuff?

Also, I wonder how many different exercises it knows of and if it's expandable. I did gymnastics in high school & karate in college, both of which use exercises not usually done in other sports/workouts. I don't think the average person does iron crosses or san bon-zukis.

Absolutely, I took my, expensive at the time, first and second gen iPods to the gym, I take my iPhone now. I do not place it on top of a weight stack, but stuck inside a band or pocket it is plenty safe from damage. The biggest problem has always been the slack in the earphones getting caught on a handle or machine. The Nike+ kit is actually a reasonably priced accessory, if I can use this without buying Nike shoes I am very interested.

is that a possibility? the buying it without buying nike shoes? i'm under the impression the nike+ipod is only available with nike shoes. i haven't looked too much into it since i had a terrible knee injury and can't run much any more, but this as a weightlifting app would be amazing and i would love it. i'm just not a fan of nike shoes . . .

I can't wait till they add the bluetooth defibrillator accessory so if someone at the gym codes, we can all be there to help

I have been wondering now Nike & Apple would evolve their + system.
When you start talking suggested workouts, possible diet recommendations... this has a lot of potential*.

* to rub personal trainers the wrong way. :p

Looking at the patent, it looks quite to be in quite an advanced stage (the level of detail on it is greater than even some of their previous GUI patents) on this looks like it could be properly on its way. Shows the potential of the SDK very neatly, and just how important it could be to opening up new markets for Apple and their developers. This app in particular looks pretty ace, dovetaling neatly the market for gym equipment [youngish affluent people willing to spend money on hi-tech equipment] and iPhone/ iPod touch purchasers.

If you combine this with food tracking software (think weight watchers points tracking, or calories/fat etc.) then you have a handy system for keeping healthy that's always with you in a good form factor. The use of multi-touch gestures really does make this a much better option than similar software on other platforms.

I agree. I'd definitely work out with my iphone in some protective workout strap. But I don't think it would be too far fetched for them to add some type of add on hardware like the shoe one to either track reps, steps or heart rate. Granted the current Nike device can do steps and the iphone could mimic it with its accelerometer, neither of them could monitor heart rate which I think would be an incredible added bonus for performance and safety, especially with the potential for real time audio/visual feedback on the touch screen. WOW! I'm really getting excited thinking about it. Been really interested in getting more fit but I'm lacking the motivation for the whole lifestyle change it would involve (not just hitting the gym.) But if the software had meal reminders (who remembers to eat 5-6 times), hydration reminders, meal journaling, customizable work out routines, tracking online and a few other things it could really integrate health and fitness into my day.

I wanna say maybe you should go ahead and develop it for yourself anyway. What are the odds that Apple will do everything, they usually just pick the basics but do them well. But if you can create a software implementation of a healthy lifestyle system for the Touch platform, then you could create a real viable alternative.

Hope this is one of the first iPhone apps available in the app store come June.

The kit is sold separately and is $29 but at present it only works in Nike shoes (see note below).

Since this iteration would appear to be semi-independent of running activity I would assume the product could be used in non-cardio/Nike shoe fashion. like all of us, I am just speculating.

You might want to check out this article on using the Nike+ kit with non Nike shoes

Last Christmas, I wanted to get my sister one of those kits, but she doesn't like Nike shoes. I asked an Apple Store employee about it and he said you can stick the shoe part in the laces or something.

If Apple can figure out a fitness system that can get people healthy I'll know that it is run by more thatn mere mortals.

Seems cool although i would never use....because i'm a lazy fat@$$ who doesn't workout...yet stills stays thin  Godbless my metabolism :p

Nike+

I use the Nike+ sensor with my Brooks running shoes every day. There are several products out there that allow you to attach the sensor to the laces area of your non-nike shoes. I just connected it to my shoe with a small velcro strap and it works perfectly, and you barely notice it at all. Just be sure to calibrate it. Check runners forums; its discussed alot. Not many avid runners like nike shoes. But the Nike+ system for the nano is great, and i'd buy a more advanced system that included an entire workout program in a heartbeat.

Health/fitness/weightloss companies should jump at the SDK to make apps

I'd definitely use this. it would make tracking my workout/weight progress 100 times easier than my current "drop everything into a spreadsheet if I remember to" method. even better if it can generate a playlist from the music currently on your phone to match the pace of your suggested workout

sir, here is a blank check with my name on it. Write down any amount on this piece of paper that you feel is fair...

There is room for a lot of people in the space, and I would expect at least 3 or 4 other vendors shortly after the June launch. I'm not sure if I'd take the time to turn it into a commercial product, because the support/testing portions of the software lifecycle are a nuisance, but it depends on how the market develops. I 'm not looking to take on the big boys in the commercial space, but I do want an app that behaves exactly the way I want it to at the gym for my own use.
If you don't have to supply the robustness of commercial software, the 80/20 rule works in your favor.

Uffff... I originally thought it was a joke. I guess not?

Reading some of the replies, I can picture people actually lining up overnight to be the first to give Apple $300 for "that". Fascinating.

This thing would be freaking awesome! I wonder when its going to be released or even officially announced.
