There is so much quick information I get from the Dashboard. Live Tiles on Windows 8/10 are a lot like this. Just a button press for instant information and I can then run off on an errand or to work.

I also use Dashboard daily. Everyone who is seeing this behavior has the ability to send a bug report to Apple - which I have done:

"The update to Public Beta 5 changed the settings for dashboard from, in my case ‘Enabled as overlay’ to off. Upgrades shouldn’t disable previously enabled functionality without explicit warnings."

It's a lot more valuable to send a message to Apple indicating that you think this is bad than just commenting on a website.

Cheers, Liam

The only thing I ever really used it for was for the little calendar widget, to check the day of the week, and dates and stuff. Not a huge loss for me. It clearly looked out of date in comparison to the rest of the OS.

I haven't used Dashboard in a while now. If they do keep it around the widgets really need to be updated graphically.

I like the now retro-looking graphics. Beautiful reminder. I think the design is such high quality, it is standing the test of time very well. I don't really like to see iOS 5-6 apps now, but these in the Dashboard? They are simply beautiful even today. Look at the Calendar! Still the best! :p

I also find that the tiles screen has more character than the Launchpad screen.

So there's a calculator on the Dashboard, an app, and on the Notification Centre?

Guess Apple will kill Dashboard and migrate the widgets to the NC in the future.

All this scaremongering... They added "Off" as option 1, so all you who had it set to use dashboard as a space (old option 1) got it set to off on this update. I had it set to overlay (old option 2) and it got set to spaces (new option 2).

Would be a shame to see it go indefinitely as I use this widget daily still :(View attachment 576287

Likewise, use it several times daily, including using Phantom Gorilla to stream the BBC…..

And put to the computer to sleep about 40 minutes after I turn in using the iTunes Timer .

Others I often use include:
- Currency exchange rates
- Clocks set to different time zones
- Sun Clock to track day and night through the world
- Calendar
- iStats to monitor the memory status of my HDD's. With just the original 120 GB internally, archived photos of local sports events can fill that up quite quickly.

----- and others from time to time. I would not like to see Dashboard disappear.

I use it daily to check weather quickly. Is there any other way to do that?

Yes; I just look out the window next to my desk. I don't need a widget to tell me about the weather.

It's been disabled by default since Yosemite. Little late MacRumors. Granted it would only be disabled by default in Yosemite when performing a clean install. Upgrading to Yosemite wouldn't disable it.

is there an alternative for dashboard now? like for translation, etc...

The Notification Center is its replacement. As for translation, I use iTranslate, which is really powerful, and sits right up in the menu bar for quick and easy access. It's available in the Mac App Store.

Noticed that when I updated. I know a lot of people don't use it but I keep a weather radar running at all times. Storms all the time where I live so it comes in handy to hit a hot corner to take a look.

I use it for my weather radar every day with Radar in Motion, also, as well as for the Delivery Status widget. If those two would have actual apps to put it all in Notificatoin Center, that could work.

Calendar, Translator, Converter and Calculator for me.
not sure about translator but other things can be enabled in notifications. Notifications is less obtrusive than dashboard and is clearly Apple's new preferred way of doing these kind of tasks. I used to use dashboard a lot but now most (although not all) things I used it for are in Notifications.

I tried the dashboard once and never really got into it. I like the notification center better as it is more consistent with iOS and I get everything I need there. I see a lot of folks use the dashboard in this thread and that is a surprise to me, but everyone has their preferences.

The reality, it seems to me, is that Apple will continue to bring OSX and iOS closer together -- and that means notification center over dashboard.
It's not just that. Notification center is better than dashboard from the UI perspective. It doesn't take you out of the workflow and to a completely separate screen.

Shame they are doing this. It was and is an awesome place for seldom used but needed "NOW" things. I still use it frequently. Especially the calculator. Spotlight's calculator, well, sucks.

The calculator is on the sidebar today/notification.

Apple has quietly disabled Dashboard by default in the seventh beta of OS X El Capitan, an unsurprising move given the ten-year-old widget feature on Mac has not been updated in over four years and looks increasingly poised for retirement. Dashboard was similarly disabled by default on OS X Yosemite.

While a few websites claim that Apple has removed Dashboard from OS X El Capitan entirely, the feature can be re-enabled by opening System Preferences > Mission Control and choosing "As Space" from the Dashboard drop-down menu. Then, tap on the Dashboard key on your keyboard to bring up the window.

Dashboard was introduced on OS X Tiger in 2005 and acts as a secondary desktop for widgets such as a calculator, calendar, clock, weather, stocks, sticky notes, mini games, dictionary, flight tracker and more. Widgets can be added or removed from Dashboard by clicking on the plus or minus buttons in the bottom-left corner.

I hope Dashboard (or something very similar) is kept available at least as an option, I use it many times each day and I can't think of a convenient substitute for it just now.

It's not just that. Notification center is better than dashboard from the UI perspective. It doesn't take you out of the workflow and to a completely separate screen.
I view Dashboard on "hot corners" - just a quick swipe takes me there to a full screen and back, just as easily as NC but with more information

Every dashboard function I used to use is available now as a "Today" widget in notification center. However, I wish Apple would do this instead, or at least as an option: Make a blurred overlay just like Launchpad, and have it show two columns kinda like Notification Center on the iPad in iOS 9. On the left have your widgets, and on the right have your notifications. Perhaps widgets could take up 2/3 of the space since there is more space on the desktop, allowing for more complex widgets showing detail like weather radars and give more space for utilities such as calculators to offer advanced functions. This would further unify the design language between OS X and iOS while updating the somewhat clunky notification center.

Make-A-Pass is a great Dashboard widget. Much better than the other password generators I've used.

I have a VAT calculator on dashboard that I use quite regularly. I also use the conversion widgets occasionally. Personally, I'd be sad to see it go.
