I think so too.

My Hail Mary home run hope here is an Apple SoundBar with AppleTV built in.

Combine the HomePod and AppleTV into one, price it right, and they'll sell very well and likely be an awesome product. It would be great to have that and then wirelessly tie in HomePod mini's as rear surrounds.
Yup. HomePod Theater. Day one purchase for me.

But will probably be called HomePod Max lol.

In the living room I plug an ATV 4k into a 65” 1080p plasma I bought in 2012. And oh boy the picture quality is still stunning even by today’s standard.

Right there with ya - I have literally the exact same setup.

Our plasmas hold up much much better than many would have everyone believe.

Gorgeous.

I don’t care they don’t produce it anymore.
But I will be super pissed off if they stop working.

If I buy speakers, I expect them to work throughout their lifetime.

The problem here is they are Apple tied only. So they better come up with a solution to pair with other systems otherwise it’s pure robbery.

I have a pair which I don’t intent to trash. This is not papers flushed down the toilettes.
I am hoping they address this concern.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you should probably sell them.

They are going to end up useless way before they should, simply due to the electronic guts and no other connectivity options.

The only thing Apple might do to “address it”....is make some other newer and different product.

Yeah I have the same feeling that I might need to sell them.
Problem is nobody will be interested in buying them...

Not to mention everything it hears in your background goes to Amazon cloud for data mining - privacy with Echo and Alexa is out of the window.
Not really a concern for me. They know that I watch a lot of Marvel and Star Wars and had a dog that barked sometimes. Hopefully that helps them suggest better stuff on Amazon.

I wouldn’t worry about that. It will stream  music for years to come along with Siri support. It will enjoy OS upgrade for almost as long as HomePod Mini.

If anything, you should also be worried and not buying into HomePod Mini because if it doesn’t do well, in 3-4 years it will share the same fate.

Apple's original HomePod did not sell well not because of the high price tag, but mostly because of the state of Siri and other UI issues. AirPods Pro have a high price tag and yet they sell well.
Apparently you are mistaken.
The mini has the same user experience, featurers and Siri functionality as the larger HomePod.

All with the exception of the larger sounding better and the mini having better handoff via UWB.

I was thinking about buying another to set up as a stereo pair. Thinking twice about it now.

I really like the sound from my HomePod.
Very disappointing but hopefully they will release a new version in the future.

That is why people called out for Apple to offer at the very least an aux output or ubiquitous Bluetooth. But of course Apple HomePod fans here didn’t care until now (?). The situation is ironic.

@sidewinder3000

I really agree with you on the platform/ecosystem and support and trust angles.

Apple are playing with fire by burning people like this.

To your very good point -- once people start dipping toes in other pools, it gets much much easier to fully switch (and never return)
Playing with fire is exactly right. And why? Because a product only makes a 20% margin instead of a 40% margin? Out of some sophomoric idea that they only want to make a handful of products?

The reality of being the biggest tech maker in earth has changed things for them, whether they like it or not. They can’t just abandon people who’ve invested in their ecosystem, and severely limit their options because they want to go on pretending that they are a small, lean, scrappy, underdog of the company. Not just because I don’t like it when they do that. But because if they continue to create more and more latent dissatisfaction within a user base that has spent a lot of money investing in their products, then when people do start leaving (like, say, when smart phone category matures) it will happen in waves that occur so quickly, they won’t be able to react fast enough.

So many loyal iPhone and Mac users I know have Alexa speakers all over their homes, and get their music “free” with their Prime memberships. As Alexa keeps getting better and better, she is eventually going to start replacing smart phones, and even Google search, for a lot of people. And suddenly, the phone at the center of Apple’s dominance will stop being the golden goose, and their goose could be cooked.

A stereo pair is more than twice as good than a single HomePod. It makes a world of difference. My recommendation would be to jump on it before they’re all gone.

So you have a "mini" and no regular model? I don't understand why they had to discontinue it, sure many mini customers would eventually upgrade. I have the mini, it's a great device for its size, but it does not compare in quality to the full-sized Homepod.

I love my HomePod. Along with the Apple Watch, it's the best new hardware product Apple has launched in the last decade and it should have been improved upon, rather than discontinued.

I never bought them as an Apple fan - I heard their sound in the store and I fell in love with their sound.

It took me a while to buy them both.
It makes sense and I agree, they should have offered wired connection as well...

I just listed them for sale right now but I still hope Apple might release some point Update to allow Bluetooth connectivity to other devices in the future even if they kill Siri on them.

I love my single HomePod, it's a perfect speaker for bedroom sex music over the other two jank brands.

So since everyone knows Apple is “so concerned about the environment” they better be releasing a software update to enable standard Bluetooth audio support.

Because if my HomePods are bricks in 5 years because they don’t work with Apples services, then Apple clearly don’t give a **** about the planet.

I’m still using my Logitech z5500 from 2005, they work just fine.

I wonder if homekit support will move away from appletv/homepod, perhaps only work with the mini or not at all?

Yeah, you have a point. - AMusic.
I didn’t like the HomePod mini from the moment I saw it during the announcement.
I know m they have great sound but I really don’t like their shape, size and overall look.
It’s just a personal thing.

Kinda disappointed by this but not overly surprised. They were at a weird spot in the market. But I love the sound quality of my stereo pair connected to my Apple TV 4K and will hopefully enjoy them for years to come.

I got a lot of pushback and down votes when I commented on various articles back in 2018 complaining about the lack of Bluetooth and an aux line in. I said that eventually a 2nd gen HomePod would come out and the first gen will be discontinued and eventually no longer be able to access Apple's servers. My 1st gen Apple TV 2007-2010 (have 3 of them) still work somewhat since I can sync 720p videos to them and sync my iTunes library to them. They no longer can access the iTunes Store to buy or rent movies, TV shows, Podcasts or access MobileMe for photos. The security certificates have expired and since Apple doesn't release software updates for it, it doesn't connect to the internet. Same thing happened with the 2nd gen Apple TV, I threw mine in the trash. I have a 3rd gen Apple TV that will probably also end up in the trash once Apple stops allowing it to connect to iTunes servers.

I bet in 6-8 years, the original HomePod will respond with "Hmm, I'm having trouble connecting to the internet" when you ask Siri a question or ask her to play a song from Apple Music as Apple will change security certificates again and no longer offer software updates for it. At that point your 10 year old "smart" speaker from Tim Apple is a piece of electronic waste destined for the landfill. Funny because my 2 iPod HiFi units are 14 and 15 years old and work great with my old iPods and my AirPort Express..

One can only hope they allow it to work as an AirPlay 2 speaker indefinitely.
