Noooooo… I love mine. I have 2 and added a mini but the sound just isn’t even close to the same. I’m rushing to buy another full-size HomePod. Looks like they’re getting full firmware support alongside the minis.

price is fine actually. the problem probably is Sonos owns the nice wireless speaker market. and you get more flexibility there. plus isn't Siri on Sonos? if not I figure that will be happening soon enough.

Sad day for those of us who are happy with their HomePod(s). I bought 2 when they were on sale at Best Buy and couldn’t be happier. I hope Apple provides updates for a while.

I have a stereo pair and love the sound, but I live in an apartment building and the bass is a little too much even at low volumes. I may offload the big ones for a pair of minis. If I wasn’t living in an apartment building, I would never let go of the pair of HomePods I have now. The sound that comes out of them is truly amazing, but I don’t feel like I am getting the most out of them since I have to keep the volume lower so I don’t disturb my neighbors, especially since I like to listen to music late at night. I wish Apple would allow us to adjust the bass. C’est la vie.

Yes, but none of those were mini. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro makes sense. Ones for light and thin, and ones for professional use. If there were only one around, it would make less sense.
meanwhile, having a singular product called “mini” while not having a bigger version of it seems very stupid.
Apple had the iPod Nano when there was no iPod anymore. It makes perfect sense to keep calling this speaker HomePod mini given it’s size.

Yeah, they might discontinue the HomePod then give it a better chip.
Yes they have to. This HomePod is the second last device with the A8 SoC sold and if this is true then the Apple TV HD is the last one yet, unless a new Apple TV is revealed for the March 23 event which could discontinue this Apple TV then this is a possible move by Apple to discontinue what is left of the A8 perhaps😊

EDIT: so Apple has officially announced this, I thought this was a rumor.... so this means Apple TV HD is the last A8 SoC device still in production and sold

Yeah, I don’t see them just discontinuing it.
Maybe updating it with a U1 to match its little brother, or combining it with the Apple TV which would be kind of cool, and probably renaming it HomePod max or something like that, but just dropping it entirely, leaving only the mini? Na
If you read Apple’s statement, it’s clear they’re discontinuing. If they had a refresh in the pipeline, they wouldn’t have released that statement.

I picked up the HomePod as soon as it came out, and use it all of the time. That said, I primarily use it to play music in the kitchen, and set timers; I don't usually play it loud enough to take advantage of the higher quality sound. Since I have a home theater system for playing music loud, a mini would be fine in the kitchen, and has a much smaller footprint.

I highly doubt this, mainly due to the name. If there’s just a HomePod mini, that’s kind of stupid.
That would be like them discontinuing the regular iPad, and all the other iPads, but keeping around an iPad mini.
But not completely unexpected
Apple released a statement. This is official. It literally says while supplies last on the website.

Part of the problem is that apple came late when the market was dominated by others and they came in way too high on price. I think the HomePod is incredible for its size but $349 was way too much for people to digest when the market was owned by much cheaper alternatives. They should've lowered the price to 199 last year when they announced the mini. Sadly this became the next iPod hifi. That too had great sound but was way overpriced. The sad reality is that most people only care if something sounds “good enough”. Clearly the HomePod mini accomplishes that at 1/3 the price.

This is also confusing considering they just launched $599 headphones.maybe the AirPods max will suffer the same fate in a few years.

I’m actually pretty shocked by this. Yeah they priced it too high but the sound is incredible for it’s size. Why not just lower the price and keep it around for 199

Presumably it’s not profitable at $199. It’s probably not even profitable at $299 unless they reach a minimum threshold of sales, which it appears they didn’t.

I expect they'll release a hi-end HomePod (i.e. HomePod Max) which will essentially be a replacement for the original HomePod and make the mini the standard model.

No change overall, but better marketing. The original HomePod might have been worth its price, but releasing it first and marketing it as the standard model put it in competition with the Amazon's Echo and Google's Nest instead of it's true competitors like Sonos.

This would make a lot of sense. As someone else pointed out, they added home theatre support which is not available for the mini. Why spend the money to develop software integrations for a dead product? I would suspect THIS iteration will be going away and something new is coming.

Not a good move IMO. The HomePod sounds way, way better than the Mini and not having a high quality audio option is going to hurt.
Apple is running a business. The HomePod was selling poorly. The HomePod Mini is selling well. Apple as always made the business decision to focus on products that sell well and generate revenue. From that perspective it’s a good move.
