Big jump in entry level price, and huge jump in entry price for the cheapest 7.9" iPad. Hard to argue that they should keep selling a 2013 product, but i would have liked seeing a 32gb iPad mini 4 for $299.
5 Rings baby!!! Let's go for 6!

Air 2.5? Try Air 1.5. They took the Air body, shoved an A9 in it and called it good.
The new Apple, ladies and gentlemen.

That is good. Assuming they used that extra space for battery, I think that's fantastic. The original air is plenty thin/light enough. It's less than a mm thicker than the air 2. Who cares? All the product lines have reached thinness maximum. I'm glad to see Apple not sacrifice all else in the name of thinness.

If you think about it Steve Jobs was reluctant to release it in the first place. I like the size but perhaps it has been squeezed out by bigger phones.
Personal preference... I have a Mini 4 and an iPhone 6S Plus. I got the 6S plus from a friend for gaming. It is not my working personal phone but still I have the two devices to compare. I much prefer the iPad Mini 4. Typing on the Mini is a joy unlike typing on the 6S plus or any phone imo.
I will continue to buy the Mini form factor as long as they offer it. I certainly hope this is not the death of the iPad mini. I am very disappointed that they did not upgrade the chip this go around. I had my money stashed to buy one :( but there's nothing to buy.

For all of those who had the iPad mini 2 that ground to a halt with iOS 10, (& 9) I hope you learned the Apple Lesson:

New iOS versions beyond which your device shipped with will eventually kill your device if you keep on "updating".
How true.
This has been true for decades: most Apple devices (classic OS - Macs to iOS devices) usually performed best with the shipped OS and the next major update (unless you were able to upgrade the hardware obviously).
Beyond that, the OS updates gave you more features and options, but usually at the cost of a "laggy" Mac / device.
With every major update the situation becomes worse, until finally you feel ready for the next device.

They will soon enough. This was just a minor spec bump. The next release will absolutely sacrafice everything else for thinness. Thats all they know

I'm reading this on my ipad mini 2 64gb
I've had it for about 4 years and it has served me well
I also have an iphone 6plus which is a big phone but would never work as a tablet - that commentary mystifies me because the mini has well over twice the screen area
my wife had an early large ipad but replaced it with a mini
I think it's a very practical size and it would be a strange decision if Apple were to replace it

I've only started to notice this in the last few years but it's definitely true. My iPad mini 2 is still on iOS 8.4 and runs just as fast as my friends mini 4 on iOS 10, whereas my dads Air 1 is so slow on iOS 10. I've had remarkably few apps that require higher than iOS 8 too but they are increasing. As a purely media consumption device which I mainly use it for it still works great. If a new mini does come out I will be tempted though. I'm not really interested in a bigger iPad.

I have the iPad Mini 2, and it has horrible lag under iOS 10. It is no wonder they discontinued it.

Much easier to discontinue it, than to fix the OS for it.
Really? I have the iPad mini 2 as well with iOS 10. Not experiencing any lag on mine. Where do you have notice the lag at? Genuine question, not saying you're making this up. :)

This actually saddens me more than it should for a few reasons.
1) It increases the entry level iPad Price.....
That's the weird part about it. The regular 128GB 9.7" iPad is now just a mere $30 more than a (128GB) 7.9" Mini4. And with the option to save $100, or $70 compared to the Mini, by buying the entry-level 32GB 9.7" version, are they trying to dissuade people from buying the Mini? Who knows what their rationale or intent is on this one.

Well, I am not the only one complaining of the same issues, but I will describe to you what is happening.

If I am on the MR home screen, and the page is fully loaded, if scroll down the screen turns all white for a few seconds, then the content appears on the screen. If I go back up to the top of the page, the same thing happens. Also, while scrolling, it is not smooth like it used to be, it is choppy.

IMO it behaves as if it is low on RAM and the system is page swapping the content from the webpage.

Another issues is the lag when typing or clicking on a text box to type. Example, if I click on the address bar in Safari to type in a webpage, it takes about 2 seconds before the keyboard to pop up. When I type, the text doesn't appear right away, but a second or two after I type.

These issues used to be a lot worse then they are now, as Safari was basically unusable, but after a few updates, they made Safari on my iPad Mini 2 into a barely usable web browser.

Last night I thought about recording the issues with my iPhone just to document it incase someone asks about it, or if they think I am making it up. BTW, why would someone make up these issues, that seems silly to me.

Looking at the kids in my neighborhood they all have the Mini. 128GB just priced them out of an upgrade as they don't require more than 32GB.

And yet some think they'll add a 10.5" iPad so they'll have the mini, the standard, the 10.5" and the Pro? I don't see it happening.
Before yesterday they had two Minis (2 & 4), two 9.7" (Air 2 & Pro) and the 12.9", ie, five models. What is wrong with having four models going forward (Mini 4, new 9.7", 10.5", 12.9")? What is so bad about having the two price points for the mid-size iPad to have slightly different screen sizes (while quite likely having the same physical size)?

Air 1 battery: 32.4 Wh
Air 2 battery: 27.3 Wh - 415 cd/m²
9.7" Pro battery: 27.5 Wh - 511 cd/m²
new 9.7" battery: 32.4 Wh - 'brighter than Air 2"

Is that confirmed? If so, with the large battery and efficiency of A9, this could be the best battery life yet in an iPad

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Oh I don't doubt your claims, in fact I just after I posted my comment to you, I read someone elses comment on this thread with a similar issue. I just upgraded to iOS 10 sometime last month (late I know, but I was worried about lag as well). So I was thinking maybe it was a "delayed" thing. I'll take note of how my iPad is now and see if anything is similar to yours. The only I notice with web browsing is sometimes when I go back to a tab, it has to reload the web page. I'm guessing a low RAM issue.
