Apple Discontinues iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

Following the announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro models today, Apple discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and ‌iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple usually retires its Pro models with the release of their successors, and this year that's no different. Both the ‌iPhone 17 Pro and ‌iPhone 17 Pro Max are no longer available on Apple's online store.

The ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max were introduced in September 2025, at Apple's "Awe dropping" event and released later the same month. Both models are powered by the A19 Pro chip and feature triple-array rear camera systems, all of which have 48-megapixel lenses, with one being a 48-megapixel Telephoto camera offering 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. There's also a 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera.

These models replaced the titanium frame of the iPhone 16 Pro models with a new aluminum unibody design incorporating an Apple-designed vapor chamber for improved thermal performance, while retaining 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes. The ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro launched at $1,099, while the ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max started at $1,199 in the United States.

With the discontinuation of the ‌iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple's lineup now centers on their successor models, with the ‌iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at $1,299. For the first time, a 2TB storage capacity is available on the smaller model. Apple today also unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, which starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with storage options going up to 2TB.

Elsewhere today, Apple has raised the prices of the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e on its online store.

While orange is my favourite accent colour, I will keep my 17 Pro for a long time. Without a case.

I went ahead and picked up a 17 Pro in store last week, looks like I did the right thing.

17 Pro was one of the best releases ever that’ll last a long time (unlike 16 Pro that was immediately outdated):

• All the new useless standards including Bluetooth 6 and newer N1 and Qualcomm modem chips
• Jump to 12GB RAM that’s still the max for new 2026 devices so it’ll be useful for several iOS and AI generations.
• First vapor chamber and much better thermal performance. I can actually use my phone on bright summer days without extreme dimming and throttling!
• Useable, much better battery life for non-Max. My 14 Pro and 15 Pro were abysmal in this regard. You always had to get a Max for a true heavy usage day.
• 4x and 8x telephoto… on a non-Max iPhone! Used it many times.
• Before all the insane price jumps due to AI supply constraints.

And don’t forget that gorgeous orange color. One of the best iPhone generations ever that I’ll be sticking to for years.

The Orange Pro 17 will go down as a legendary Apple color. Right there with the jet black iPhone 7, citrus MacBook Neo, the Bondi blue iMac, orange clamshell iBook, etc.

They only come around every so often. Sky blue and Burgundy are "fine" but whatever.

iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced 5x telephoto while iPhone 15 Pro stayed at 3x telephoto. iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max were both 5x telephoto but both were retconned by iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max 4x telephoto with 8x optical quality.

I have the 17 Pro in orange and I am content with it as it does all that I need and want. There is nothing in today's iPhone announcements that makes me want to get anything new right now.

Too bad they're stopping sales of these models. I bet they could sell a bunch of them now with the new models out and more expensive.

They really, really need to switch to an every-other-year upgrade cycle. This is just a waste of resources, human energy, and money. This product category has matured and we do not need a brand new phone every year.

Yes I’m aware. But I’m talking from perspective of someone who doesn’t want a phablet Max.

15 Pro’s 3x was extremely limiting. 5x was better but the 4x/8x optionally is significantly better than either.

When variable aperture was introduced in Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ there were only two options but with iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max there are four.

Was expected. I have the 17 Pro Max in Orange. Beautiful color. Love it very much. While the new 18 Pro Glacier looks good (burgundy too, but have to see it in person), they are nothing like the bight and saturated orange. Wish Apple has such a bright colored option every year. Think many across the world like the orange. Sadly, Pro models, be it be iPhone, Mac or iPad always come in standard black (or variant of black), silver (or white) and maybe some other color in case of iPhones (but that too will be a dark shade like the burgundy).

Also while the price hike is only $100 in the US, it works out to around $315 in my country. Steep hike.

Love my Orange 17 Pro Max and will definitely keep it.

Hey, it does look cool in person. And I've had a year to see it all over the place, it seems like everyone and their mother got orange (and I have seen the silver a couple times). I found the deep blue to be the star and that's what I ended up with (although I did wrap it in the terracotta case).
