It streamlines the whole release process, and brings the prices down. Having distribution for a small minority who don't want to get with this century would be harmful for the overall pricing and distribution. I do feel sorry for the small minority of people who can't get ready access to a broadband line, i.e. remote villages of Alaska or some places in foreign countries where there are fast, but heavily capped connections. For the vast majority of users, however, it works well.

Who says it is only a small minority? Perhaps on this forum, because we are all sort of tech interested. But out there it is not a small minority, at least here in europe. All the people I know who just use their computers for browsing, music and their pictures have just these usb internet sticks - often with a 3gb data limit here in austria.

Bad and getting worst

I work at a large university in Canada. My Apple rep still doesn't know how to go about getting me Final Cut X for my institution. It's been out for a while now, you would think they would get some directives on how to do this from Cupertino. I foresee less Apple software everywhere, but then again that's the plan isn't it? They can then concentrate on the real money maker (IOS).

Jeez I had to pay 2x retail to get an unopened box set of 10.5 Leopard/ iLife '09 because of this silly boxless craze by Apple. Seriously, $240 for four year old software that retailed at $130? Really?

All I can say, is if you think you may ever, ever need a box set of SL get it now or you'll be hunting on EBay like I did down the road.

wow i paid like 20 bucks at best buy...

If all they are doing is browsing, then they probably don't care about upgrading their software. But seriously, a 3G modem is not a replacement for home broadband.

I believe you're thinking snow leopard.. but any way another thing about using the apple store that bugs me is that it requires at times large sums of money or link to a credit card be tied to my apple id which has already been hacked once in the last month. There was no security risk when buying a hard copy of software and installing directly to my system. Now there is great risk in my opinion and experience.
