I have no doubt they have a 7" iPad in their labs. Bet they have a 15" iPad in there as well, or something of the sort. R&D does a lot of things, not just developing ONE thing they stick with and never deviate from. People would be amazed how much different stuff is played with and in rough, but never sees a store shelf or even public attention.

This "rumor" is a big DUH.

Yeah, but for arn, when you say these obvious things, after them being rumored for years, and then it turns out that the obvious was true, well that means you must have an inside source!

I think it would be irresponsible for Apple not to prototype an iPad model that could compete with the Kindle Fire and other, smaller tablets. However, I am at a loss for use-cases where the smaller screen would be preferable or compelling.

Although that might be a lack of imagination on my part; I would never dream about buying a Kindle.

Would rather buy a 7.85" Apple e-ink reader that competes with the traditional Kindle. The current iPad's size is about perfect, but not the best ebook reader.

Viewing 'special pictures' at work or on the train on my pad is a little obvious at times, a smaller more covert version would be welcome while giving a more user friendly experience than me squinting at my iPhone.

I'd buy one.

eh

This look like a fake rumour to me.

And it doesn't even make sense. Even though smaller is good.

When Apple brings out new products they often increase resolution, not decrease.

Its on par with the iPad 2's resolution, only smaller..... doesn't make it much of a seller..... Why would u want a smaller tablet that impacts quality ?

Unless theres a way to have higher than 2048x1536 of the new iPad, on this 7 inches model, it does' look very promising.

Then again,, lower resolution, could be in Apple's favour to make money..... but if it is true, who would buy it ?

I bet in the end the iPad is going to stay the same size, but we see a slightly larger iPhone.

(Yawn) I could not care less.

I've used a friends Kindle Fire, and for me, that size is too small.

Size does matter!

arn, I challenge you to give us a single example of Gruber offering accurate information-- that wasn't previously a common rumor. ( also challenge you to man up and give me the apology you owe me, that I messaged you about.)

Gruber just repeats rumors, after sifting them for plausibility. He doesn't have any inside contacts at apple. Or he didn't at the time you started thinking he was some big source. (now, because you and a lot of other people are so gullible, Apple previews things for him but that's only a week or two before announcement... and its embargoed. You think he'd actually give a real leak and lose that access?)

In fact, that's proof right there that Gruber doesn't have an inside source. IF he was leaking inside info, Apple would cut off his advanced access to things. He's free to engage in speculation, however.

The idea that Gruber saying this is some sort of confirmation is just asinine. You're taking his confirmation-- when he's never had accurate advance info before-- as confirmation?! Gullible!
[....]

GULLIBLE!

Well Said! Gruber is an idiot, and it just cracks me up that he tries to be all shakespearean in his posts about him possibly having some vague knowledge of an Apple product.

I honestly don't know who's more full of it...Gruber ....OR... Digitimes:D

Might want to check your math again. And remember that the diagonal of a rectangle is not linearly proportional to the area of a rectangle.

It's actually about 65% the size. So not quite 50%, but also not 80%.

I confirm your calculation. It appears that user Mac-Rumours and myself were equally incorrect.

I still maintain that apps will need to be redesigned however.

The only problem I would have with the 7inch is we're exactly would that fit in with the current line up?

Just once I'd like to see a rumor about new iMacs or Mac Pros here... Even if it's a ridiculous, sketchy rumor from someone with a bad record for predicting Apple releases... Rather than the same rehashed iPad rumors again and again and again and again.

The only problem I would have with the 7inch is we're exactly would that fit in with the current line up?

I have wondered that too. But i think Apple may need to release the smaller version, at a cheaper price. If Google really does release their own Android tablet Apple will have to compete on price point.

I doubt that apple would release an ipad with a ppi of 163 at this point. Given how much they've been marketing their products as "retina" displays, this would look like a step backwards in the public eye.

However, I could see them keeping the same resolution as the new ipad which will give it a ppi of 326. Would it be a little excessive to have such a high ppi on a device that you'd hold farther than an iphone? Yeah. Would it be worth it to spend a few extra bucks on production for a product that aligns perfectly with the values and aesthetics that your company's built a reputation around? Yeah.

I would honestly feel more comfortable with a 7 inch with a retina display then the 10 inch but that's just me.

re original article

i'll keep the smaller one in my car untill t shirts with gigantic pockets become fashionable

The only problem I would have with the 7inch is we're exactly would that fit in with the current line up?

Where exactly would it fit in the lineup? I think it would replace the iPad 2.

I could see it priced at $299 or even $199 to compete with kindle. I think it's important for apple to get a low-cost device out for technologically undemanding users: Folks that just want to surf a little and read books and online pubs. Even discounted as it us now, the $399 iPad 2 is still too expensive (and large) to toss in a bag, slam down on a kitchen counter, throw in the back seat of the car and generally treat with the lack of care afforded the printed media that people grew up with.

Apple have to fix that quick to get more ordinary, everyday users into the fold.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is taking a really good look at Amazon right now, and finding a whole middle market, dominated by the Fire.

Smaller iPad means closer user distance. Needs to be better than 264 ppi for retina quality.

They definitely cannot release a 7" iPad and not have it be Retina. That will be the #1 rallying cry for the haters and news outlets out there.

4" iPhone
7" iTouch
10" iPad

I think it fits nicely.
