Fitbit used to be big then Garmin came along.
Now that Apple has the 'iWatch', it has slowly dominated the smart watch market.
If Apple would remove the iWatch's need on pairing to an iPhone, then the iWatch would probably become more popular.

You are dreaming. :p There is no reason for Apple to make a budget watch with strong sales leading the market.

Isn't the Series 3 (and eventually, Series 4 *MAYBE* for series 6?) the same thing? Go two gens back = there ya go..budget watch. It's what they used to do with the iPhone models.

I remember all the “Apple is doomed” crowd saying the Apple Watch would fail. That it is too expensive and ugly.

Wonder where those people are now???
Still saying it, also saying only people buying them are "sheeple", you now you pretty much have to own an iPhone to want one. Oh, that is part of the idea, yah?

I am use Garmin because I am bike guys, it's really convenience for recording Strava out of bat. I think Garmin stuff are more popular for folks doing regular exercises / training athletes.
I don't know, I see a lot of people exercising with Apple watches too. There are some specialized cases where other brands are better (apparently marathons is one). But its a watch, won't make you run faster, jump higher or beat a speeding bullet

The series 3 and 4 have never been released as a budget watch much less at a budget price. Third party retailers have sold the older models at a lower price than Apple but, that is not the same thing as a budget watch being released by Apple.

Series 4 no, but the series 3 is sold by Apple now at a much lower price than it launched with. It became the budget version.

I guess it depends on what your definition of budget is.

I was one of those people who didn’t like the Apple Watch when it first launched. I loved my iPhone and iPads but thought the watches were weird until I got the S2. It took 2 tries before I fell in love with them. Almost 4 years later and there’s no turning back from using Apple Watches.

I have my beloved and still perfectly functioning Seiko Automatic sitting on my desk (that I wind every week or so), and thought for years I would never give it up for an Apple Watch. It's been such a fantastic watch for me for just about 20 years that I've owned it. But as I've gotten older, and watched my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and my wife all experience heart related issues, I bit the bullet last November and got my wife and I Watch 5's. Neither of us have gone a day without wearing them and expect we'll be Watch owners for the foreseeable future.

Prior, my wife was even more opposed to getting a Watch than I was, as she's had the same Tag Heuer watch for more than 20 years (although hers requires a new battery every year and service every 2 years - my Seiko has required zero work) and she is not very tech savvy. But she loves the Watch - she does complain that she feels like she can't get away from work because of the Watch, but frankly she can't get away from work because Covid-19 and the increased business her company has experienced, and the Watch is just the messenger.

It's funny, I keep adding new Watch faces, and she'll even comment on how nice some of them look. But when I tell her she can do the same thing, she's like "I don't want anything other than what I use now", which is California. I suppose I just need to grab her iPhone and add some Watch faces, take the initial complaining like a good husband and know that she'll end up liking a different version with more complications once she has it on the Watch.

Since I’ve had the Apple Watch, I sold my Omega Seamaster and a vintage Omega Cosmic which were both sitting in a drawer collecting dust.

Fascinating to see how fragmented the (non-watchOS) market is. Looks like Tizen, LiteOS, and Garmin OS each have 7-9% of the market. After that it falls off fast. Wear OS (née Android Wear) is down to about 2% market share (Fossil)...maybe they also have a sliver of the "Other", but it hardly makes a difference.

I stopped wearing mine. Got tired of charging it every single day. Just another device I have to remember to charge or go without. When will we get over the air wireless electricity? Didn’t Tesla already figured that out decades ago?

I can't even believe their share isn't like 90%. I literally almost never see any watch besides the Apple Watch. This all must be outside the US or wrong data.

People are obsessed with their Apple Watches lol. Though I still can’t justify buying it. Just isn’t for me

It's crazy, right? I thought I would miss the heavy, and heavy-duty nature of my Seiko Automatic (and the technology that went into making it). But other than my feeling the need to check my Watch screen any time I accidentally knock it against something, since I went with the Nike model with glass screen, I don't miss the Seiko.

I didn't want to pay for one of the more expensive versions with sapphire glass, especially not knowing whether I would actually want to wear it everyday. Now that I know I'll keep wearing it, I think I'll upgrade when the 6 hits and pass my 5 on to the one child who doesn't yet have a Watch. Maybe do the same for my wife's 5 and that can then go to her mom who really needs one.

I still see a lot of cheap fitbits or similar things. They don't really do much for people honestly besides tell them the time and their steps. I hear people claiming their more advanced fitbits does everything an Apple Watch does but when I press them on what they do with it it’s always far more limited than what I can do on my Apple Watch. Forgetting even the built in apps I can record a voice memo on my watch and have it available on any other device. I can check my email on different apps with different features like snooze and I can check my deposits and investments using the mint app. I can set reminders that tell me when I get home or to work to do something rather than merely a time and place... and it taps my wrist discreetly rather than a sound or vibration I might miss with my phone in my bag or pocket. The fact that everything between my Mac, iPad, Watch and iPhone is synced and (almost) always available at least in some form whether merely viewable or actionable no matter the device I’m using is priceless to me...or at least worth what Apple charges! :)
