Oooh, 2.5 million! The amount they spend daily on legal battles worldwide in an attempt to secure a monopoly on rectangles with rounded squares?

Asshat Donald Trump was willing to donate 5 million to charities if Obama produced his birth certificate, meaning 5 million is pocket change to him. His net worth is $2.9B, Apple's is $300B.

2.5 million is just a cheap ad... 1 million less than a 30-second Superbowl spot.

I think instead of giving $2.5 million in cash, Tim Cook should have given them 5,000 iPad 4s instead.

That's what Steve Jobs would have done.

He didn't believe in throwing money at charities.

He thought he could help the world more by putting out amazing products.

I think he was right.

Getting an iPad 4 is way better than anything else you could get from these charities.

edit: I was reading some earlier comments, if any investor is "screaming at apple" for donating too much money, then that person is an ass and if I were Apple, I'd give them their money back and tell them to go "f" themself.
I'd put a picture of that investor on the apple.com front page and write "This individual screamed at us for donating 'too much' money to Hurricane Sandy relief. This is his home address [.....] and this is a list of good places to buy torches, pitchforks and jagged knives [.....]".

We're deep in Poe's Law territory with this one. Either this is a scathing troll post, or something really damn scary.

I can only compare with what my company donated, and after scaling for company size, revenue, profit and cash, $2.5 million seems about right.

On the other hand, what did people donate to Haiti? While New York is nearer to many, Haiti had an earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands, made a million people homeless, in a tiny country that didn't have any spare cash in the first place.

As of Friday, the Red Cross had raised $117M for Sandy, so Apple's donation is significant. To answer your question, the Red Cross raised $475M for Haiti; not really a fair comparison, as Sandy donations are still coming in. They did raise $2B for Katrina over time.

In truth, the Red Cross doesn't have the ability to spend all the money it receives for many high profile disasters. Based on the number of meals, other supplies, and overnight shelter stays they have reported, they haven't spent nearly as much as they have collected for Sandy. The overage is used to pay for all those low profile and smaller-scale disasters you never hear about.

----------

2.5 billion might have been a nice gesture.

And what about the next disaster... and the one after that?

----------

Something to prevent times of great need.
Suggestions?

Apple = Mr. Burns

$2.5m for people suffering.

$21m to license a ridiculous clock.

Apple, sometimes you're such a disgusting POS.

You can't be serious...Please tell me how an iPad would benefit those that lost clothes, homes, food etc etc?

There's a saying, "Give a hungry man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he eats for a lifetime."

Same principle applies here.

How does an iPad "benefit those that lost clothes, homes, food etc etc?"

How WOULDN'T it benefit?

He can use the iPad to find the nearest shelter for immediate assistance with clothes and food.

He can use the iPad to file an insurance claim on his home.

He can use the iPad to find to look for missing loved ones.

He can use the iPad to find support groups with other hurricane victims.

He can use the iPad to research how to rebuild his life after a natural disaster.

He can use the iPad to enrich his life.

Steve Jobs was right. Giving people technology that can enhance and improve their lives is better than just giving away money to charity.

They could do those same things with their laptops, provided they didn't burn down with the house, or wash out to sea. And what happens after 10 hours when the battery dies, and they can't recharge it?

Technology is a wondrous thing, but don't think handing out a bunch of iPads to storm victims is going to miraculous solve all their problems because "it gives them the tools to help themselves". Chances are good at least some of these people already had iPads, or ways to do the very things you mentioned. What they're discovering is, moreso than any of the latest, trendiest gadgets, what they need is support.

...and an iPad can only take you so far in concerns to that.

Wow. The force is strong in this one.

My car broke down.

I demand a iPad mini.

If you're an avid user of Apple products, they should give you some money for repairs. The sooner you can use it to get to work, the sooner you can put it behind you and continue purchasing Apple products.

Did you know that all of the smartphone-related patent lawsuits that Apple and its competitors have been involved in the past two years have generated a combined $20 BILLION in LEGAL COSTS and related expenditures which is EXACTLY the estimate of the TOTAL DAMAGE that Hurricane Sandy caused?

So that $20 billion WASTED on lawyers the past two years by all these smartphone companies suing each other could have ERASED all the damage that Sandy did, rebuilt all the homes that people lost, fixed all the damaged property and businesses, repaired all the roads and infrastructure, etc.

Or it could have paid for 40 MILLION iPad 4s to be given to the people to help them rebuild their lives. Imagine all the POSITIVITY of the Cloud-like braintrust power of 40 million people connected by their iPad 4s UNLEASHED onto the world could bring!

People forget this was Steve Job's ultimate dream, to bring together all the world's people connected by their iOS devices to create a NEW UTOPIA. It would have been like living in The Matrix!

This is why Android needs to be stopped. Because iOS + Android equals fragmentation, and Android ITSELF is a hopelessly fragmented.

How can Apple UNITE the world as a WHOLE under iOS and bring peace and justice to the galaxy if there's an Android rebel in the way?

What did Alien teach us anyway? Never trust an Android! You think they're on your side until one day you turn around and they're trying to stuff a rolled-up porno mag down your throat!

This is disgusting. 2.5 million for a company that has 100 plus BILLION in CASH! All you people saying its nice of apple have no logic for money and how much apple is really worth. You are talking about one of the biggest disasters in US History and apple throws a little 2.5 million dollar check on the table and says "ok we did our part"

Like someone mention earlier this is pennies. It's almost sad in the sense that most of the people who were effected own apple products and the best apple can do is 2.5 million? Yet they spent 3 BILLION to bail out Sharp a non US company?

Sorry guys you won't find a bigger fan of their products as me but their business motto and how they are starting to operate is really getting annoying.

Blame your Government, not companies/people who make donations.

Stop reaching Mr. Fantastic. I would (I'm willing to bet you would as well) take food & shelter over an iPad. Steve had every right to not donate to charity, however don't tell me that a freaking iPad would enhance my life in situation like that.

I think it's actually an interesting question. My home was badly damaged, and I was without power/phone for a month after Hurricane Andrew in Miami in 1993. Given internet access and the ability to charge the device (big "ifs"), I think an iPad would have been worth more to me in that situation than the $300 or so that it would cost Apple to deliver it to me.

Communication, information, insurance website, ability to document damage, etc. would have all been more valuable than the cash. Even the entertainment value would have been important.
