Apple is donating $1 million to aid in relief efforts in Indonesia after Indonesian island Sulawesi was devastated by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on September 28.

Following the disaster, more than 1,000 people have died in Sulawesi and several other Indonesian islands have been hit with aftershocks and similar quakes.

Apple CEO Tim Cook this morning tweeted about Apple's $1 million donation.

Our hearts go out to the people of Sulawesi and all of Indonesia after this weekend's devastating earthquake and tsunami. Apple is donating $1 million to aid relief efforts as this beautiful country starts to rebuild. - Tim Cook (@tim_cook) October 2, 2018

Apple often accepts donations from iTunes customers for relief efforts on its website, in the App Store, and in the iTunes Store, but right now, Apple is continuing to collect customer donations for hurricane Florence relief efforts.

Apple last month also donated $1 million to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts in North and South Carolina.

I know they don't have to give at all but that seems like a pathetic amount. According to some sources, they make 5.3 million dollars every hour.

This site gives sobering statistics.

It’s a million dollars. That’s a lot of money. Nothing for Apple, but it’s a lot of money.

Why can’t you just accept the good deed. Boy is this place bitter and jaded.

I'm saddened by this news 7.5 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Indonesian. I feel so sorry for those people who lost their home, family, friends & pets.:(:(:(:(

For your information:

$1Million is lots of money convert into Indonesian rupiah 15,028,518,787.79 IDR

As an Apple share holder I strongly condemn this. I will do the charity myself. As an individual, Apple employees and the CEO can do charity themselves. To take money from Shareholders and then use that to do charity is not right. After a point it's illegal and we shareholders will sue the company.

Well I don't really mean that. I was just saying that to point out to the people who will complain that a company with billions is only paying one million.

I hope people understand that this is Sarcasm. There are replies to this post that seem like some are not getting it.

How much did Amazon give? How about Facebook?

These are corporations, not governments. They needn't give anything at all actually. You want to give Apple a million dollars of negative publicity over the issue? It's a positive thing to give money.

If this donation equals 0.01% of Apple profits for the week - maybe you can consider matching that percentage and donate as well?

Just some thoughts that come to mind when I hear someone putting a negative slant to philanthropy.

It is one million, they care about, it does not hurt them at all, but they are doing it. Others are not. So, as you write, it is absolutely ok. One million more to help them.

I just hope, people will remember, where the money is coming from. We are humans, whatever religion we are. Just humans in need of help in Indonesia in this case. Everyone is helping, no matter of - whatsoever. We just help.

Who knew that $1 million is a pathetic amount.

I think it’s generous of Apple when you consider how many of these mega disasters we are seeing all over the world and how many hit the US in the last year alone and Apple has been responsive to so many of them.

I lived there for about 6-7 years, right now the exchange rate to the € is highest it has ever been, or lowest value for Indonesians, it's 17,300ish today.
While that seems a lot prices went up and up and up last decade and especially last 2 years, more so than most other countries.
My girlfriend is Indonesian, right now she is there and tells me many times you can buy less and less for their Rp.
Yes, 1 Million is a lot for Indonesian standards, you can buy a house and never work again but 1 Million $ is not a lot for help regarding this earthquake and Tsunami, probably a billion or more is needed to recover from this disaster.
The big one which hit Aceh more than a decade ago far exceeded 1 Billion $.

It would probably cost you a few cents or far less.

This is by far the most selfish/greedy post I read in years.

Edit: Oops, Sarcasme.

Could ask how much Tim Cook donated also. Or could show that some individuals donated double than what Apple did the last time.

Individuals that are not valued at one trillion dollars.Apple is doing this for pr and advertising.

Shareholders and the board question the donation and charity. no matter how big the company are shareholders refuse to give away free money to any cause. So this million is nothing more than a media headline for Apple just like anyone else who helps. Companies are existed to make money and maximize profits every year. charity is not part of their goals. But as humans we feel sad and angry by this humble contribution of the 1 trillion dollar company.

They probably make more than that per hour in bank interest. Proportionately it's probably less than most of us donating 1 cent every 2 years.

It's 0.0002070393374741 $ cents per share.

So, to the one above (Not the one I replied to), even if you have 1000 shares, which to many people is a lot you still only lose 0.2 cents.

Exactly. And it's on macrumors to make everyone feel good about their buying choices. It's like they donated money for everyone here so they don't have to.

Except it is just a million. And as I pointed out individual people more than doubled what Apple donated last time this was on macrumors.

But phones over 1k dollars helped so out of the kindness of apple's hearts they could donate a entire million dollars.
