Is it because the AirPrint "app" is a background app on iOS Devices? Since the iPod touch 2G does not multi-task, then it cannot print. Same reason the iPhone 3G is not supported.

Ams.

Sounds actually quite plausible.

Most unfortunate

Most unfortunate as of all possible features this is the one that all iOS devices really could benefit from right back to the original iPhone and iPod Touch. I don't see why this is such a problem to implement since even a Mac128K could print. iHad it. Programmed it. Hacked it. Printed it. Just do it in foreground.

Thank you. This is what I mean:

My 3G runs fine background apps just not running apples neutered software.

Actually can't seem to see any slowdown at all from my 3G and Jailbreak software. Yes I do run background app, and almost all other things that iphone 4 does and no my 3G runs the same speed it did without the jailbreak. :D

So for me all this is just Marketing fluff.

So, let me see if I get this right. Apple, or any software computer company, guarantees that all hardware, regardless of age, will be eligible for all upgrades? I think I have an Apple II that I'd like 10.7 on right now; I don't really care that the OS isn't out yet, I want it now; oh and it should work better than the my macbook. Because we all know its about me, nobody else (or reality).

All software companies try to please everyone. Good software companies will make decisions like this; to opt not to update the software for devices that won't perform to their expectations. Now, we could just opt for the Microsoft way and end up with wonderful experiences like Windows running on a netbook... That just pleases everyone :)

Disappointing a bit for me, as a second-gen owner, but more disappointing for those who purchased the 8gb model more recently while the third generation was out.

LOL. Those who bought a second gen while third generation is out obviously don't care about having the latest and the greatest.

I agree completely. When someone buys second gen iPod touch while third gen was released, they pretty much don't care about having the latest and the greatest.

Since Apple updated the press release quickly, it was probably just a mistake in the first place rather than an actual change of plans.

By the way, this is different from the game center situation. You can't really say Apple "dropped" game center from those iphones and ipods and later "restored" it -- it just wasn't there for a beta.

Put down the hate stick, please. Why do you care what anyone does with his/her device? If one decides to use the Home Screen wallpaper and Multi-tasking, and the potential performance issues, then isn't that up to the individual user to decide? Why not get more out of a device if you can? Just because Apple says it might not be the "best user experience," I still want to be able to try it!

The rhetoric around here is that the great and powerful jailbreak community will save us from Apples tyranny and limitations. In reality they give very little other than cheap-looking apps and poor performance. Home screen wallpaper brought my 2G touch to a standstill. I was glad when the 4.1 update arrived so I could un-jail break it.

That's great, but if your not using Apple's multitasking, whats the point? App compatibility and OS integration are compromised. That's fine if your proficient enough to JailBreak your phone and deal with all of the "little things" that don't work right, but I wouldn't recommend it to your average user.

At the end of the day, if Apple tests a feature on old hardware and it does not meet there performance expectations, the feature should be cut.

Sort of (maybe). Even the original iPhone with iOS 1 could multitask -- e.g., you can recieve email in the background while browsing the web. Apple used multitasking in some of their built-in apps -- they just didn't expose it to developers until 4.0.

But it may be that touch 2G does not have the memory/processor to print in the background without adverse effects on the system. Or it might be that Apple didn't want to devote the developement resources (testing mostly, I'd guess) to ensure that it would work well.

As long as it works with my printer shared via my airport express router, I'm good. If it doesn't, not a big deal. I don't print much anyways.

If Apple implements it as a persistent background service (for other apps to connect with) it will consume RAM. This is the limiting factor on these devices. With only 128 MB of RAM and an OS foot print of about 100 MB of that, even a small increase in the OS footprint could significantly impact app performance and stability.
Rewriting or optimizing the OS for legacy hardware would be a significant task. It would require more testing from the app developers and Apple as the versions diverge.
I think it's fair to say that power users who would benefit the most from these new features, probably are not running on the old hardware.

We had printing, pre-emptive multi-tasking, GUIs, desktop wallpapers and everything back when PCs had 16 MB of RAM and 100 mhz processors. Scratch that. I got X running on a computer with 8 MB of RAM. And you guys are telling us that performance on a 600 mhz device with 256 MB of Ram would suffer from this ?

Seriously, I doubt Apple is that bad at coding stuff.

I guess when I got the free 2nd generation iPod Touch 8GB with my Macbook Pro, I got what I paid for. :p

It's just a bit insulting because Apple was still selling these as of a month ago. If they're going to discontinue support for a product, at least let it be a product that hasn't been sold in a while.

When iOS 4 was released with Wallpapers, Multi-tasking and all the other goodies, the iPhone 3G was still being sold by Apple. It got none of those features while not even being EOL'ed.

And yet you think something they stopped selling a few months ago is an obstacle ?

...

Still upset that my Playstation 1 doesn't browse the net. I hate when they release new features like that. They're just trying to get me to buy it!

you're completely full of it, there is no iPhone 3G anywhere that runs Apple's 4.x multitasking and performs well... with the iPhone 4 as an example of well.

He didn't say Apple's 4.x multi-tasking. He's talking about Backgrounder, an app available to people who jailbreak.

Either way, I have to agree.

With one/two apps running it's fine, but even a small game like Angry Birds then leads to memory out errors and crashing.

Fact of the matter is, the 3G sucks ass.

Had one. Jailbroke it. Got the T-Shirt.

If you can live with the lagginess then thats your choice. However, it IS a **** user experience and I completely agree with Apple's choice to not include it.

Your 3G base hardware is essentially 3-4 years old now. Suck it up :D
