yeah, never "stock up" on tech stuff, especially not from Apple where you don't get a bulk deal anyway.
I bought a 1G 512mb Shuffle when they first came out...$99 for an iPod was a big deal back then. At least the old shuffles could double their use as thumb drives. Sure, you can save files onto any iPod, but only the 1G shuffles could do so without any extra cables/docks.
Still, mine sits in disuse...my video iPod ousted it.

Saw the 2GB models are on the store today. Really disappointed that they're the same bland colors as the current offerings. Kinda kills my desire to get a 2GB right away I'll have to wait until the next color suite comes out.
