Apple Drops 'Late' From 'Late 2016' MacBook Pro Model Names

Yeah, the fact they had the audacity to mock the naysayers who they proved right with the same model they launched that day is a slap in the face.

Some of the worst PR performance Apple has ever delivered here, but the target demographic has either moved on or is about to just give up on the nMP, so the few that remain interested aren't very loud, why listen.

Practically dropping the product line wouldn't sting half as much if they at least had the generosity of sharing what the hell they are on about.

I know they are all about surprises and secrets, but you can only go so far until you damage your customer relationship permanently.

Glassed Silver:win

The other slap in the face is that the tag line for the 2016 macbook pro event was 'hello again'. Implying that the release of those laptops was somehow equivalent in importance to the original mac, or the original imac. But Apple these days is so full of themselves on everything they do, the hyperboli shouldnt be a real surprise.

Maybe they plan on sticky to an honest to goodness yearly schedule for them now?*

Then, a late, early, mid nomenclature would be unnecessary?

*and of course for the record, a good portion of their timeline has to do with having to follow intel's

Or maybe its that they know going forward, updates will only happen every 2, 3 or 4 years, so the scenario where there would be a refresh inside of the same calendar year would be patently absurd.

This morning, references were uncovered regarding new models in a recent Sierra beta. This afternoon, the long-anticipated, late to the game MBP refresh looses the 'Late' moniker.

These are the most conclusive rumors I've seen on this site in some time!

The original naming system was developed at a time where Apple would release new machines as often as they, or their partners, could innovate. This sometimes meant a line of Macs would receive more than one update a year. The Apple of today cannot conceive of a possibility of releasing more than one update a year, and as evidenced by recent release cycles can barely be bothered to update once every several years. So this naming just makes sense now.

IMO this is evidence of two things:

-Apple is very clearly, unquestionably on a once-a-year, maximum, schedule for ALL Mac updates

-The rumors pointing to an earlier-2017 MacBook Pro update are likely true

macOS 10.12.4 beta has me uneasy about buying a MBP in the near future. First, new Macs showing up in the beta and now this. What are the chances they will update in the spring alongside the MacBooks? Kirby Lake chips will differently be delivered to Apple... (probably already have their hands on them for the MacBook refresh)

Update: MacRumors reader Peter Cao tweeted us a screenshot that shows "Late" has indeed been dropped under "About This Mac" on a 2016 MacBook Pro running the second macOS 10.12.4 beta.

Running the release version of 10.12.3 on a MacBook Escape, and About This Mac has also dropped the "Late" from "Late 2016":

Conspiracy theory: they want to release an early 2017 MacBook Pro, and don't want people to easily see "late 2016 and early 2017" beside each other, causing some buyers remorse.
Now including the (last time ditched) higher capacity 'terraced' battery and finally an optional 32GB of memory?

I could buy that, the theory I mean :D
