this makes sense as the USD is dropping. Why should people overseas pay too high a price when the Mini is made in China, intl parts, but still.... they peg the Chinese Currency artificially low to the USD, so... why the heck not.

Until US politicians get rid of the govt deficit and the FED stops printing money to buy debt... the USD will be lower in value.

so... umm yeah sad reasons, but why shouldn't people get a better price out of it elsewhere. sorry to say it, but this is my bet on why

Interesting as at these prices it's cheaper on the continent than in the UK.

Cheaper model works out as £32 cheaper
More expensive £10 cheaper

Rate used €1.15 to £

Still far too expensive for an entry-level product. If apple was serious about the budget market, they'd drop the price below £450. Even if that meant making it slightly bigger, or out of plastic.

Given the components that are in the mac mini, they would still make a hefty profit even at £450.

Fingers crossed they update the Aussie site tomorrow morning??? It's pretty late now.

Hmm I don't know why I care though, I'm not getting a Mac Mini anyway.

Apple are obviously thinking that the Pound will drop against the Euro in the near future. With the upcoming austerity cuts about to increase unemployment and the Bank of England beginning to discuss whether further quantitative easing may be necessary to keep the recovery going it's a fair bet to make.

Apple ... entry-level product ??? Get real ...

If you want to buy cheap entry level garbage with stripped down features and/or cheap components, you have to go somewhere else.

Great! About time, I always thought £649 was a joke.

So $699 ~ £440, £599 without VAT ~ £505.

That's much better, a more realistic view of the cost of import duty etc. Would be nice to go down another £25-£50, but a price drop is a price drop.

Not looking forward to the VAT rise in January though...

Now if only they'd do that to the MacBook Pros...

/agree.
although macbooks/mbpros are in the same price in dollar/eu (999dollars and 991euro), which seems ok as a price (a little cheaper in america since its the company's country). but the mac mini was so damn expensive in euros (i just found that out, and it seems wierd). its pretty logical they dropped the eu price.

The change in price is quite understandable. If I look at the price in Sweden:

US-price exkl VAT
$699 = 4820 SEK

US-price with Swedish VAT
VAT = 25%, 4820 SEK + VAT = 5980 SEK

SWE-price with Swedish VAT before reduction
7995 SEK (+34% vs US-price)

SWE-price with Swedish VAT after reduction
6995 SEK (+17% vs US-price)

So yeah, we still pay around 17% more than the exact same unit in the US counting our own taxes. In reality they could have lowered the unit to 5995 SEK and we'd be paying similar to what you do in the US. Not sure if the lower unit sales in our region forces Apple to raise their prices a bit.

About time…

That price drop was really about time. Let me quickly show you just HOW much more it used to cost (and I'll add a sales tax of… let's say, 7% for the US):

US: $699 * 1,07 = $748
DE: 809 € = $1,125

That means the Mac Mini was 66% more expensive in Germany over the US. Now it's just 32%:

US: $699 * 1,07 = $748
DE: 709 € = $988

Still kind of messed up and btw a major reason why Apple products aren't as successful outside the US.

Don't forget the European prices include VAT but the US prices don't include their sales tax which is added later.

Agreed. I always smile when Americans are complaining about Apple prices... I wish we in Europe would have such prices...

Even before they went to Intel, most of the components were standard, now that they have 'Intel Inside' even more so. But the custom box and motherboard don't cost that much.

The Mac Mini is a tramp in a good suit. Compared to computers at it's price point, even the new lower ones, it's wildly underspec'd and overpriced - always has been, always will be.
