The iPod being phased out is a sign of the times. Who has a separate MP3 player these days?

Unless you have a ridiculously large music library and wish to carry most of it, most people just use their phones.

Well, I am one of those who has a separate MP3 player (in fact, I have a number of separate MP3 players), because I do have 'a ridiculously large music library', have no interest in the Cloud or in streaming, and want to have (and be able to access) my entire music collection in one, neat, simple, portable device that plays my music, and is designed to do nothing other than play my music…...

My music library is in fact ridiculously large, which is why I recently bought a Touch. I don't want it on my phone (storage and battery life), and it won't fit on my rMBP (256GB SSD) without causing serious space cramps, so the Touch is a good (not great) solution: doesn't take space or battery runtime on my critical devices. Still, an update that could run iOS8 and higher and 128GB of storage would have been even better.

Oh, yes. A heartfelt amen to that.

Some of us aren't interested in an Android phone :D.

Exactly. Some of us are not even interested in a smart phone…….

When I am home, the phone I use is an antique Nokia which draws stupefied looks from normally languid and laid back teenagers……..

I'm going for the smart phone, I just won't use the phone part. I'll use it for my audiobooks and will use an old nano for my music. For $100 less than the 64GB iPod touch I'll be able to buy a unlocked phone (with 18GB) plus a 64GB micro SD card and a hard case to protect it. I'm a huge apple fan but if they're abandoning the iPod I have no choice but to go elsewhere.

I love the attention that my Motorola Razr V3 gets :D. It used to be the smartphones that got the attention. Now it's the old flip phones that gets people's attention :).

That's a wise choice. If you can, I'd recommend rooting the phone you get and removing the phone-bits. I've done this to a dozen different Android phones (and converted them into portable media players). With the phone elements removed, battery life is insanely long (even much longer than keeping it in airplane mode)

I know how to root but is there somewhere that explains how to remove the phone elements?

You are forgetting that Apple 'lumped' Apple Watch and Apple TV into the accessories category as well.

How can you say I forgot the Apple Watch's membership in the accessories club when I mentioned it in both of my postings?

And Apple knows that those two products sure will have be bumped out of that accessories category soon.

Again, I said the Apple Watch was an up-and-comer and that it was on the way in while the iPod was on the way out.

Invalid reasoning.

Physician, heal thyself.

Same here. Just want an iPod with enough storage so I can keep a goodly chunk of my music and audiobooks handy. The 64 Gb iPod touch has been ideal.

I don't like cell phones, and am not interested in plunking down money for one when all I want is an iPod.

For me it was pretty much hit-n-miss. There were the obvious ones like "Phone" and "dialer" and a few others that were carrier-related. Just those few are enough... I didn't delete the files just renamed the extensions, rebooted and saw what resulted.

I recommend sticking with the stock ROM and not installing custom ROMs (or only custom ROMs that are based on the stock ROM)
