Apple DVD slow motion - no audio

I'm using A Macbook Pro to play instructional DVDs using Apple's player.

When I use slow motion there is no audio

a. is this standard

b. can it be changed

c. what other player would you suggest

slow motion on almost all DVD players cuts the sound out to prevent it from sounding distorted.
