Well, I knew it was temporary, but the first notification I got of the imminent demise was last night when I plugged my phone in. No emails to let me know when.
Thanks, apple!

Not really, you just add there email address to the photo stream. They get a web link.

For some people, free (or paid) is better than ad supported.

Why would Apple care if you use another email provider?

I think that is like abusing your friends and family, forcing them to click a link to a website that they are not familiar with, and don't know how to get back to, unless bookmarking it or search email every time.

Also, the more shared photo stream you use, the more space it will use on many people's 16GB/8GB iPod/iPhone/iPad. I am sure you would want to keep it enabled on your iDevice to access those photos, otherwise why bother? Since Apple's also mean about charging $100 for 16GB of space…

----------

Some people buy an ios device or two a year. It would be crazy for Apple to give away that much space over even a 2-3 year period.

Why is it crazy? Apple makes 30%+ of the purchase price of any iDevices.
For an iPhone, that's over $200. Not to mention additional money they make off app purchases etc.

DropBox gives you 5GB as well, your point?

One could say they did not just purchase an expensive gadget from dropbox so it does make Apple look cheap and even worse by downgrading what was already there.

If only they would send you like 10 warnings to reduce your storage before it was cut off... Oh wait!

I doubt warning are all that helpful for people that have that much storage used.

Except for email.
And contacts.
And calendar.
And notes.
And reminders.
And access to iTunes media.

But other than that... :)

Right.

Because these are all really unique and useful things without an Apple product....

5GB is a joke nowadays, period.

Apple is ripping us off:

I have a whole bunch of Apple products, including two Apple TVs (v.3).

I cannot stream my photos from any online services (like SmugMug), because there are no apps available for ATV.

I cannot stream from Flickr either, even though there is an app, because Apple has made it so that only public streams are available.

Which leaves the ONLY cloud option to be iCloud, which is a total rip off, if you go past 5GB (which most of us do).

The crippling of the Flickr functionality on Apple TV is particularly galling, IMO, and clearly has an anti-competitive purpose.

I'm sorry. I know your argument was easier when you pretend that those features don't exist. :(

...

No, I don't.

But users have to jump through so many hoops to use them without being fully enclosed in Apple's walled garden, that they are hardly worth the trouble.

I have both iPads (2xv.4s and 1xv.1), iPhone 5 and Androids.

I hate iPhoto (a corrupted database made me lose metadata for thousands of photos), so I use either PS of LightRoom.

Syncing with iCloud is such a convoluted process, that it is more hassle than it's worth just so I can stream to my Apple TVs. Which I suppose is Apple's whole purpose for blocking every other photo-streaming option on ATV.

But no, I was not aware that Apple doesn't count photo uploads against the measly 5GB limit. Which is irrelevant to anyone not completely locked inside the walled garden, because of the jumping through hoops I noted above.

I really like Apple's design and I am willing to pay a certain premium for it. But it doesn't mean that I am happy when I am being ripped off and blocked from using better and more convenient services just so that Apple can make another few dollars on top of the thousands they make from me from hardware sales every year.

They charged me for the $20.00 plan with 10 GB.

Logical decision on their part, IMHO. :)

----------

Reading through the complaints in this thread, I have to say that I'd appreciate it very much if there were a safe way to use iCloud storage as easily as we can use Dropbox storage.

Drag and drop on an iMac or MacBook desktop, easy manipulation and sync with iPad and iPhone, and without having to deal with proprietary file names.

I'd even pay more for being able to do that with iCloud. :)

Damn I'm paying $40/year for 25GB.... just for backing up my iPhone and iPad (both are 64GB devices)... I think I need to seriously consider syncing with iTunes again... wait.. my retina MacBook Pro only has 256GB of storage, backing up both devices will instantly kill a large portion of free space

I understand completely.

I don't back up to iCloud.

My iMac has a slow 1TB drive, and there are two remote drives available via wireless, including a Time Capsule.

When you think about it, though, 40.00/year isn't all that much for 25GB, is it?

@mac.com is my greatest asset

They are, however, letting me keep my @mac.com email address FOREVER! :)

beyond all else I love that I still have an awesome junk free email address that was set up when the key lime g3 ibook was current & I have had access to plenty of alias' also.

I downgraded to the 5GB storage, I deleted some of my backups and let my free 20GB storage go. iCloud ( in numbers ),Lost some really important documents. I will be storing my documents where i can SEE them. Apple have let a long time customer down. Apple ARE better than this. NOT HAPPY:mad:

It's Apple's fault that you deleted your own backups and lost your documents?

Justin if you had read my original postings. Apple LOST numbers and pages documents (and admitted that similar things have been happening to other customers). After this i decided i no longer wanted to use icloud for my backups.
The fact that you have no control over your backups and the fact that apple DID lose my documents led me to deleting my backups and downgrading my storage.

Ah, OK then. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Yes, it does suck that Apple lost your documents. But hopefully you have taken this as a learning experience -- never rely on a single backup for important data. My most important data is backed up at several locations, some my own backups on physical drives at different addresses, and also on multiple online / cloud backup services.

This is the only way to nearly eliminate any chance of losing important data. And if something so widespread (across the country) happens that every backup is lost, it means that there most likely is a lot more other things that I'll need to worry about.
