SO I remember hearing/reading something that said that Apple encourages its designers and engineers to work on their own independent projects and that as much as 20% of Apple innovation comes form these sources. Isn't this how the new iMovie '08 got started?

Is this Apple I'm a thinking of, or Google? Does anyone know where I heard this? Was it an interview or an article? A link would be awesome, I want to show it to a professor

I wish more places did this. I'd love to spend 1 day a week on a "pet" project.

This is how iMovie 08 got started.

The guy the created it first had the idea for a Rough Cut tool for Final Cut - hence the export Final Cut XML. It evolved into iMovie 08.

It is created by the same guy who created FCP & Premiere - Randy Ubillos. Randy is the guy who shot all of the underwater footage used to market iMovie and the Web Gallery.
