With today's introduction of iPhone OS 4, Apple revealed several new enhancements to its Mail application, as well as a number of improvements tailored to the enterprise community.

One of the most requested email features for the iPhone OS has been a unified inbox that would allow users to check for new messages across all accounts without requiring navigation to each account individually. Apple CEO Steve Jobs indicated last month in an email response to a user that such a feature was in the works, and it did in fact make an appearance at today's event. Users who prefer to view their inboxes individually will also gain access to simpler navigation between inboxes for different accounts.

iPhone OS 4 will also introduce threaded conversations to Mail, making it easier for users to follow multiple discussions. Finally, users will be able to directly open email attachments with compatible apps downloaded from the App Store.

On the enterprise front, Apple will be rolling out a new Mobile Device Management that will allow for simple wireless configuration and management of corporate iPhone OS devices. Enterprise users will also be able to wirelessly distribute apps to their client devices.

Security is another major improvement for the enterprise aspects of iPhone OS 4, with new encryption options and support for forthcoming SSL VPN applications from Juniper and Cisco. Finally, support for multiple Exchange accounts and compatibility with Exchange Server 2010 offers more flexibility for corporate users.

This is exciting. Now just have to figure out a foolproof way to have spam filtering.

Count this one as "really should have been in 2.0."

But hey, better late then never.

I only use 1 e-mail account anyway, so I don't really care. Nice to see it, though.

I was really hoping for the Mail interface seen on the iPad with the drop down inbox and the split screen in landscape view, but I dont really think thats possible on the smaller screen.

MobileMe aliases

Was there any word on the ability to send email from MobileMe aliases?

I believe there's some workaround to make this happen presently, but I'm too lazy to do it.

This seems like a nice, welcome feature for many, myself excluded... but what I really wanted was folder and flagging support that matches my setup in Mail.app - any word of that happening? Ever?

I hope this means that email will be more reliable and consistent on the iPhone now. But it really wasn't that bad. What they really need to do is fix the mail on their Main OS. I constantly have problems when no one else in my office that uses a PC has.

I'll be really enjoying the addition of this feature... I use a large number of e-mail accounts.

Mark all as read would still be nice, but I think at this point Apple will never add that feature.

It's interesting to note that Google's Gmail is not listed on the slide. Looks like Apple and Google have not made up yet.

Isn't it defacto one of those Exchange mailboxes ? If set up a push email connection to gmail, I thought it required an exchange connection. [i.e., http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252 ] That was reason why folks wanted more than one (e.g., corporate exchange server or gmail ... that was the choice forced to make ). Sure it is a free advertising snub to leave them off, but all the multi exchange servers feature does is make gmail work better (with multiple accounts ). However, technically it is a more accurate way to get across the multiple exchange connection as being a new feature. Folks who have been frustrated with that the lack of that feature know exactly which email account they want to use it for.

What about importing calendar invites attached to emails??

I get calendar invites for meetings, appointments and events sent to me via email all the time. It's currently impossible to import them into my iPhone's iCal. Did they fix this in 4.0??

This is great, but I wish Apple would open up their enterprise deployment options to more companies. The requirements are very strict: BIG companies only! Medium companies might like to make their own apps too...

and PLEASE PLEASE

able to collapse the folders in the mailbox account. takes me ages to scroll down the list of folders - some dont even appear on screen fully due to the tree structure..
AND PLEASE OFFLINE DELETING AND SORTING OF MESSAGES

I can't deal with 'message cannot be deleted' or 'cannot move message' its SO annoying.. and no reason why they cant have offline caching so when signal returns it does the sync.

crappy windows mobiles have always had this.

You should fear democracy being replaced by the government.

Big corporations like Apple don't impose tax, they create jobs and encourage innovation and entrepreneurial growth. Gov. stifles that.

i personally prefer the separation of the two in boxes however i wish that you could easily toggle between the two. I hope they allow user choice on that. hopefully bonnafide push email instead of infinite pull would also be good.

Unified inbox and threaded conversations? Finally! :D

Since I added my University's Exchange account to my iPhone in addition to the mobile me one, it's been more or less a pita to read incoming mails on alternating accounts...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I was hoping we could finally add film roll attachments to e-mails within the Mail app, instead of having to go to Photos first and then sending an e-mail from there.
There are many times when you are writing an e-mail, and don't think to include an attachment until after it's written - but then you're not able to, and have to cancel and navigate out. It's really bonkers if we still have to do it this way in 4.0...

I hope local notifications feature has a non-persistent feature and it were used for the email app. It would be very convenient to get a notification on the lock screen when an email arrives. You would then just need to push the main button to see who the email was from and decide if you need to open it up for further detail or ignore it till later.

Currently for business customers we have to push the button, slide to unlock, enter passcode, cancel any application that was last running, click on the email app. With the blackberry it automatically shows you the email when you pick up the phone out of the holster(magnetic sensor). This is really the only big complaint that anyone at our company has with the iPhone compared to the blackberry. The iPhone advantages are still worth it IMHO but if they enhanced this one area the blackberry could disappear from our company.

Still no ring profiles? Data profiles? Ability to change SMS/messaging sounds to something that doesn't sound like a cartoon sound effect? A lock screen that's a giant empty space that displays nothing usable?

The iPhone will not be taken seriously in the enterprise space until these things are addressed, much to my dismay.
