I think one of the best things Apple could do to make iWork.com really valuable is allow to run keynote presentations from it. If you really value Keynote over PowerPoint but don't want to take a laptop everywhere it would be perfect, especially if PC's are already setup with the projector.

Upload your presentation to iwork.com, login on any computer and start playing it with animations and everything. I would pay money for that!

Also, editing documents would be nice also...

that is an excellent idea!

I don't imagine any technical issues either, Apple must be running some form of iWork on a server so that you can view the documents correctly (unless they are only really screenshots).

Maybe someone with more knowledge than me could explain whether it would be impossible to stream a presentation from a server, but god I hope you can!

I don't understand people that are talking about being expensive and mobilme users should have free or discounted...

I never used it since I have iWorks 08 and it requires iWorks 09, but I was the impression that iWorks.com was free....

correct me if I'm wrong...

Give me a shout when we have free wireless Gbit networking across the entire face of planet earth. Then putting my keynote files online might be slightly usefull. But even then....what am I going to be accessing them with? The same laptop that I'm already making them on that has them right there on the HDD. Still no sale.

The point to the cloud computing apps race is to skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been.

Certainly no internet based company is dumb enough to say, "wake me up when we get there. Only then will I consider developing for it."

Have you ever heard of the term "paradigm shift"? You miss it and you lose...

Iworks.com is currently free, but it's still technically a Beta App. It's possible they could charge at a later date.

The fact that Apple charges $99 per year for MobileMe is a bit excessive for what most people use it for. Sadly, the alternatives pretty much suck.

Charging for iWork.com when Google has free Google Apps is not going to go well for Apple. If anything, its going to help the Chrome pad when its released.

Unless they charge only $1 a month or something really low, its going to be a disaster. The fact that the beta is free and no pricing information has been released, I will avoid it at all costs to prevent my self from being sucked into something cool but way over priced.

I think this is a bad move on Apples part. Providing these tools free or at very low cost is going to bring in lots and lots of business users and also help increase Mac sales overall.

Just imo.

Ho hum

It isn't worth paying for, better solutions exist for free. The same can be said for mobile me. The functionality is nice, but the rate at which they work on it and enhance it is really slow. I think it's another hobby. Also, one datacenter in one geographic location is not very impressive for cloud based services regardless of how much money is put into it.

I love apple, but I have been getting less and less impressed.

I hadn't forgotten - but when my average Keynote file is >500meg, it's NEVER going to be a cloud based tool I need.

500MB!!!

Is this because of a lots of images? You can use the feature to reduce image size to make a much smaller file. My understanding is that this clips off the unseen parts of images because they are masked or extend off screen. It should not change the appearance.

The other thing I do is replace the images with jpg images. This is a real PITA but I do it when exporting for others to use the file. I keep the high quality images in my Keynote file that I use.

Is there something else that can cause such large files? Are these HD dimensioned?

I just tried it out and whilst useful for sharing documents, it isn't any good if you cant modify it online. It sure looks pretty, but there are better online sharing and editing solutions available now.

I will keep my eye on it tho as it could develop into something great.

People keep mentioning better solutions. Who else lets you post Keynote presentations like this?

It would appear that things are coming together nicely for Apple's mobile/cloud ecosystem. Though there's a long way to go to catch up with Google in this space.

In my opinion, I actually think that Google has some catching up to do.
iWork.com isn't a replacement for Pages, Keynote and numbers, but instead a work collaboration tool. Google Docs work collaboration tools pale in comparison.

I'm just trying it out on my wifes iPod touch and the mobile site is very nice.

Does anyone know how secure iWork.com is? I mean, do they encrypt my documents? Who at Apple has access to this? In the fine print of some cloud services it says the service has a license to use your data once it is posted. Google this topic related to Flickr or Facebook and find a huge number of hits.

I sometimes work with customer information which is covered under an NDA so I am reluctant to put documents containing this information up on anybody's cloud server. Yes, the chances of something bad happening are really, really small but the consequences would be really, really bad.

I worry about the same thing when making books online. I don't use them for information covered under an NDA because I can't control what happens out of my sight.

I found a nice article from a year ago January detailing features of iWork.com.

Heh, Apple still hasn't gotten around to shutting down their farcical "online" "services". It's almost painful to watch, really.

Don't watch it then.

I wish Apple would get into this and do it properly, better than Google - an Apple version of Evernote ... ah, dream on! More likely it'll stay half-baked and problematic. Unless those new server farms in North Carolina are planned for something like this that will actually work.
