The point is, an AirTag has no way of knowing where it is. A separate device can tell you where it is, but the AirTag doesn’t know.
That is making assumptions. How do you know that separate device isn’t telling the AirTag its location and the AirTag then encrypts that location with an encryption key and sends it via the separate device to Apple’s servers? So, sure the AirTag only knows it’s location when it within Bluetooth range of an Apple device. But that should be the case a lot of time we would hope.

Because a Bluetooth beacon would have no need to do anything like that.

As much as the AirTag has already been hacked, have you seen any indication anywhere that anything like that is happening? No, I didn’t think you had.

The Airtag is now useless for theft protection, and super annoying for spouses and family members.

I took my wife's truck for a 75 minute Costco run and had the notification popup. I then took her truck the next day for an hour and got the notification again.

You can't permanently silence a tags warning, which is awful. And if someone were to steal something, you'd have to recover it within an hour, or the thief can just kill the Airtag.

By notification so you mean chirp or on the phone?

Apple thinks I am going to keep their AirTags on me all the times? 8 hours are not appropriate. Android app is a good step but.

Phone notification.

Apple really shrunk the notification time. If I have my wife's keys, it's under an hour before I start having my iPhone complain now. And I can't seem to find a way to mute the notification permanently.

I'm honestly a little self-conscious of it now, I kind of worry about lending people things that I have Airtags in. Now I have to give everyone a brief explanation as to what an Airtag is, how it works, and what the safety features are before I lend them things.

Yea it’s a bit stupid that I can’t turn it off for family. Apple missed the mark.

Basically makes Airtags useless for what they were intended for.. I am always away from my items for days, sometime weeks.. why would I want them beeping?? just stupid..

Yes, it is strange that Apple cares more about the safety of humans than the safety of inanimate objects. 😏
Apple dont care about people. they care about profits, and this measure is just to appease the woke.. people who stalk will always stalk.. this just makes the Airtag useless for a lot of everyday situations.

if you leave them at a "known location" they will not beep

So I have to set up multiple known locations. mmm clunky at best.. same feeling I get when I use DOS again.. The whole, "it just works" isnt what it was hoped to be I guess.. It does work, as long as you set up a heap of toggles in just the right way..

No… when you leave it behind, a push comes on youf phone and you can turn off alerts when the AirTag is left at that location

Do you actually have AirTags? If so, you should have seen that pop-up.

What would you expect it do “to just work”? For me, it works great

It’s not a theft device. It’s a location device designed to help you locate wallets, keys, bags, etc around your home.
Theft goes hand in hand with tracking/locating. If you forget your wallet under the table in the corner of a cafe after getting your morning coffee, if nobody sees it, you have a chance of getting it back later that day or even the next morning, if it stays silent. If on the other hand it starts beeping and calling attention to itself, then it's going to get stolen, no doubt about it!
