Yeah, stalking and abuse only happen in the movies. Sure, guy.
stalking and abuse are common and most criminals are stupid. So this will happen but airtags are a really dumb method of stalking. Your tag is locked to your apple id and phone and you are committing a felony and the police just have to ask to get your info to identify you as the stalker.

Sigh. I'll let you go and read about domestic violence elsewhere, on your own time. All I'll say is, it's a good thing Apple has more thoughtful people in charge of this kind of thing.

I was thinking the same thing. This could have worked wonders to put on a necklace or wristband or something for a kid at an amusement park.
This to me sounds okay. If it is your kid, you should have the right to know where they are at all times.

Not what it’s for. Thief cannot use the tag. Plus, I am sure you can mark it as stolen, and if the thief ever puts in the battery again, it will then scream merry hell. (And report where it is). This is not an appealing thing for thieves.

First thing the thief will do is throw your tag in the river.

OK, then what does this mean: "“If people do that, they just have to make sure that their moving pet gets into range of a device in the Find My network” so its location can be tracked."
If your tag is in/on an item, let's say your wallet, which fell out of your pocket somewhere, if it isn't within range of a device in the Find My network, it's unrecoverable? What good is it?
BTW, I'm not trying to be argumentative, I truly don't understand.
Airtags need to ping iDevices to work. They don't have any sort of Wifi or cellular radios in them, they connect locally to a device that's on Wifi or a cell network and that's how they get their message to the world.

If your pet runs into the woods, and no one is nearby with an iDevice, then the Airtag doesn't have a way of connecting to the internet and your pet would be lost. :(

Memo to Apple: if AirTags are not for tracking your pet, then release a product that is. AirTag Pro?

Perhaps worse is, someone steals or finds item, takes airtag off, places it in someone else's car, backpack, bag. Said person is notified and calls the cops. They get a warrant for the info, it leads back to you. "Hilarity" then ensues with cops showing up at your door wanting to know why you are stalking this person.
I totally didn’t think about this one! It’s indeed hilarious... until the day it won’t be

GPS trackers are impractical for daily, constant use. For the occasional trip into the back woods or on a hike, fine. But they're bulky. They have short battery life, so you have to take them off frequently to recharge. You seem to not understand the distinction.
maybe hunting ones. But not “regular” ones. I charge my dog’s Whistle GPS once very couple of weeks. And I do it at night when we’re all sleeping. And they’re only super bulky on a tiny dog. They’ve gotten fairly small. About as small as you can physically cram the hardware, battery, and antenna (the cellular modem is probably the largest component). If someone wants a GPS for their dog, they have no valid excuse other than being cheap, unless their dog is under 10lbs.

Just because it's not designed to track kids doesn't mean it can't. I don't see any downside to using it for this purpose.
Especially in an amusement park.

This is true but I think there’s a lot of people living in suburbia who are worried about their pet getting out and being at risk of being hit by a car. In the city, the chances of pings to iOS devices are greatly increased

I agree, you have a $600 bike that gets stolen, it costs a lot more than a Apple tag, or anything like a lawn mower, or snowmobile, or ATV, or boat it goes on and on! People dont realize how many of these things get stolen every year.
I would actually be surprised it a stolen bike isn't parted out within 3 days. Those tweekers work fast, and in volume.

They even steal bikes attached to police cars!
"Ofcr. Sanders says on March 27th he recovered a stolen bike in the Central Eastside. He placed the bike on the rack of his marked patrol car. Then on his way back to his office in Old Town he stopped under the Burnside Bridge to deal with another issue. When he came back to his car, the bike was gone. “They took it while I had my back turned!!” Sanders shared."

How convenient.
DO NOT use this to track children. Instead buy a $300 watch.

I am so using this on my cats. This is a great idea and I suspect we will see a number of third party collars for animals.

I really think youre missing the point. This is mostly for lost items, not stolen ones. How much more often do we lose an item vs an item being stolen?
I never lost anything that wasn’t stolen so 🤷

As I’ve said before, not officially supported/endorsed by Apple ones (i.e. won’t be sold in Apple stores). Rules for their program prohibit anything to do with people or pets. I’ve had multiple pet products get rejected from the program.

it's called a joke, dappledan......
My daughter already has an Appel Watch.
Not going to lie I bought tiles for my kids on a Disney trip since they all walk at different paces but nothing happened, the one time I went to a six flags theme park we were all together then one of my kids pulls a home alone 2 where she was digging deep for candy and she got lost, the one time I didn’t bring it with me that happens

Sure, they would rather us buy a $300 device than. $30 device. Also I assume that means that the next Apple Watch isn't going to require an iPhone and/or Cellular or do we need to get the little buggers an iPhone too!?
You need to buy an iPhone for each one of them. Plus an iPad, MacBook and iMac for each. If you have 3 buggers or more, 2 iMacs can be ok. Just don't forget Apple One for all of the family. You're good.

"As for strapping an AirTag to a pet, Drance says, “If people do that, they just have to make sure that their moving pet gets into range of a device in the Find My network” so its location can be tracked."

So anytime you lose something, you have to make sure it's near an Apple device first? Got it.

That could be a problem, I suppose, if your car keys dash out the front door to chase a squirrel and don’t return.

Is that a scenario you worry about? When I lost my car keys, they’re usually sitting right where I left them.

I am a hiker. While I have never lost my keys on a trail, I know people who have. I have also found other people's keys (and a wide variety of other belongings that they obviously didn't mean to drop).

It really isn't very difficult to imagine an infinite variety of objects people would like to track that might get misplaced outside of the home. If the range on AirTags are only 30 feet, then they will be useless for a lot of people who were looking forward to buying them.

It’s to help you find something you lost. Not something that was stolen.
This is really good to know. I had planned to use them to track items if they are stolen like camera bags. But if the thief can simply disable the item then it’s not useful for that purpose. Glad I know this before I ordered them. Think Apple made the right decision but maybe they need to be clearer about what the device is not intended to be used for in their marketing.
