So what was the innovation that they copied, desktop with icons? What a unique concept, never seen anything like it before on my computer.

The documentary is interesting, but the parallel between the iPhone and the kid born the same day as its release is just weird. Like if his their life was only defined by the iPhone. Yikes. I would have take more of in depth discussions about the iPhone development and launch

And I agree with the comments here, competition is good, and pushes Apple to give us bigger screens and more functionalities. I would not want to live in a world where there are only iPhones in this world, we would still be stuck with 4 inch screens
Agree competition is good for consumers, but out right copying is not good for industry, they won't have $$$ to invest in R&D.

I'll never understand how they sold any of those junk ass phones to even stay in business long enough to get where they are today.
Because they make all their money off refrigerators and 1000 other random things with the Samsung name on it. Unlike iPhone which by itself would be one of the most successful businesses in history, none of the other Android smartphone makers would even be in business if they were relying on smartphone profits.

Copied yes, but Apple crippled their first large screen iPhone by using the same amount of RAM (1GB) for what was the third year in a row, since they knew they would still sell incredibly well.

The 6s then turned out to be a much better phone. I don’t recall Samsung crippling their devices in that manner. Plus, thanks to them, we have larger screens.
Samsung phones with 1GB RAM would be unusable, tripped should be defined by can we use the phone not by amount of RAM.

Agreed. I had both a 6 and a 6s, and the 6 would constantly reload apps whereas the 6s kept them much more frequently.

Even the 6 being dropped after iOS 12 and the 6s after iOS 15 shows that the 6 could have benefited from more RAM and would have gotten as much support as the iPad mini 4 did (same A8 chip but 2GB of RAM).

Although right now the iPhone is at a great place I still can't understand how the first iPhone was able to capture the world's attention let alone become such a big deal. And this is coming from someone who was obsessed with iPods. The device I owned in 2005 had more features than the original iPhone, a 3G antenna, could shoot videos, was not contract bound and cost less then half. To this day I find the original iPhone release underwhelming, the only thing the iPhone did better was the screen size/quality and the built in browser which was useless as a mobile browser since you could only use it over WiFi. I genuinely though that the iPhone project was gonna fail, it took 3Gs to make me reconsider.

I can't remember the name of the company—escapes the mind at the moment—but they were even more unscrupulous.

Terrible really.

They copied the iPhone down to every last pixel of the OS.

And they put it on a 9.7" display product.

They pretended it was an entirely new product category.

But it was almost literally like iOS. They stole it, down to the code base.

Was called something like the iTablet.

First rate propaganda lie. 2012 Galaxy Note II split window multitasking phablet with Wacom pen was so far ahead that Apple hasn't figured out how to copy it yet. Such a relief on the eyes coming from "you don't need more than 3.5 inch" iPhone 4 and 4S. Apple has only managed to copy the non-pen Galaxy S phablet but without split screen multitasking.

I’m glad this has never happened and appears unlikely to ever happen.
Huh. Before the Surface, the iPad was relegated to a media consumption device.

After the SP3, Apple seemed to realize the potential of the form factor and began releasing bigger iPads, the Apple Pencil, first-party keyboards, and augmenting the OS to support more substantial workflows.

While the OS is still drastically different from MacOS, imo opinion it seems inevitable that iPadOS will eventually more closely resemble the multi-window support of the MacOS experience than what has gradually been introduced.

And at that point, ~MacOS on a tablet with keyboard/mouse and stylus support will be remarkably similar to the form factor Surface pioneered.

At this point does anyone care anymore? Smartphone are like microwave ovens, I need one to do specific things. I don't really care what model I have, because all them will cover the handful of features I use.

I have iPhone because my work provides it. If they wanted to switch to S22 tomorrow I would not care. Everything I do on iPhone can be done on an Android phone.

Same thing applies to my car, my house, my watch... nevertheless I somehow do care about its quality and features.

I've had several Android phones. I get bored of them within two weeks and get rid of them. I think the longest one lasted 3-4 weeks. That was a OnePlus 8 Pro.
Well, as long as we're comparing notes, I've had Android phones since 2011. The longest one I had was for 3 to 4 years. Having used them for so long, of course we did NOT get bored by them ;)
