Really this is an excellent idea. They don’t need to put those who failed on the stage, just bring out Rockwell and say something like we haven’t gotten to where we are going with Siri yet, but this is what we’re going to be doing. Don’t talk about the past, talk about the future. Consult with the engineers first and be able to give a reasonable expectation of approximately when those features will be out. They can get with Gruber and plan their questions like they mostly do already. This way they don’t have to lose face, talk about the future and don’t look like cowards. They wanted us to have courage to get rid of our 3.5 mm headphone jack so that we would buy their blasted air pods, they should show a little courage and show up.
I need to retract having said this. At the time that I wrote it, I did not know about Gruber’s earlier “I Wonder” blog on DF. I don’t think there are many people in this world who dislike Trump as much as I do, and maybe it’s just because I’m an old lady, but I would never have said what Gruber said in the last sentence of that blog. I suspect, now, that this is why they are not showing up. I listen to the talk show often, and I heard the podcast episode when Hillary was beaten by Trump and Gruber was so, emotional he could hardly talk. So I know how he feels, but I just really think he overstepped saying that. If I were the Apple ex X I don’t think I would show up either. I wonder if we will ever know if this is the reason or if it has to do with their lack of AI cred.

This is almost exactly what I said. He asks softball level to "fair" level questions. Meaning things that wont have much push back.

He's willing to ask difficult questions if he believes he can get a discussion going or some useful information out of it. It's the questions that lead to an abrubt "we can't talk about that" that he tries to avoid, because nothing good or useful comes from that. I think he's done a pretty good job of balancing those interviews and putting them on the spot with plenty of probing questioning - beyond just "fair".

It's probably best for all parties to swerve this year because the elephant in the room would be unavoidable, and Apple doesn't appear to have a good story to tell yet about AI.

I suspect Daring Fireball’s John Gruber lost this access in 2024 when he published his I Wonder article. Read the last paragraph.

Oh. ..oh wow that was REAL GOOD. I can see Tim Cook getting really pissed by crumbling some paper and stammering on the floor during his quiet time.

It's very easy for him to take that one personally...yeeeouch 😁😁😁🤣🤣🤣

It has to be the Something Rotten article and the pettiness of Apple's Marketing team / unwillingness of execs to discuss. Gruber received the exclusive news directly from Apple that they were delaying the Apple Intelligence features long after the I Wonder article.

It doesn't 'has to be' that.
The exclusive could just as easily be a 'consolation prize' for the 9 year track record they did have. That would be decidedly not 'petty' at all.

Similarly, the exclusive could be a test to see if he didn't go down the "Tim Cook derangement syndrome" hole again. His wrap around text to the initial news did not... but all of less than a week later of stewing on it and feedback from his circle ... and the whole marketing thing is Tim Cook's fault.

Finally, as I pointed out in post 222 earlier. Apple did at least two sit down interviews during last year's WWDC 2024. Gruber's has a view count of 116K . Marquess Brownlee's has a view count of 3M . If the primarily point of doing these videos is to get incrementally deeper than the keynote discussion out to a broad set of end users, which one is the better option Apple should choose? Choosing 3M viewers over 120K is 'petty' ? Not even close.

Apple trying other possibilities in June 2024 happened way before November 2024. Likewise Apple doing something 10 years in a row would zero long term 'sanity' evaluation is also highly dubious.

This is a good point plus it doesn't include all the snippets people post on social media. I always felt like the Daring Fireball interviews were a favor to developers and not necessarily about marketing. Everyone wants to talk to Apple so it's in the driver's seat regarding access. That said, I doubt MKBHD will get another Tim Cook interview after his Magic Mouse question.

I disagree. It's even more cynical if Apple rejects their oldest, most loyal followers and pundits simply because they are critical of the direction Apple leadership is taking things. Gruber, Siracusa and even more neutral reporters like Nilay Patel are being highly critical of the disaster that is Apple's developer relations (30%, dismissing the judge, etc) and the AI debacle.

If Apple plays softball and only talks to YouTubers that have no ethics code and will toe the party line just for views then they really are lost and are no longer able to "think different". *EDIT - not specifying MKBHD about ethics, I love him and he doesn't do paid reviews and is a genuine dude but some YouTubers out there take all the paid perks etc for good coverage.

Oh yes, you’re right.

Gruber posted on his blog tonight that Apple invited members of the media to a special screening of F1 The Movie in the Steve Jobs theater. They scheduled this for 7pm - the exact same time as Gruber’s Talk Show Live event. I guess he got an invitation from Apple for this, which was marked optional. Apple sure knows how to be petty and vindictive when they want to be.

It's so depressing to me when Apple shows this side of themselves.

Like ... really?

😑
Sigh. Anyone wondering whether Apple was ‘punishing’ Gruber, it’s pretty obvious now they are. And it’s so dumb. He’s an easy interview. He’s never going to ask something he knows they wouldn’t answer. My guess is Apple won’t do any interviews this WWDC, except maybe with design type publications talking about the OS redesign. I do hope media outlets complain about the pre-recorded keynote. Google and Microsoft are back to doing live keynotes. Apple should be too.

Emphasis added above since seems to be missing relevant issues. ( Also Gruber mentioned that Apple told the press that it was optional. " ... Thankfully, my press invitation from Apple has it marked as “optional”, ..." ).

This really isn't vindictive. You have lost sight of the forest for a tree. Apple is running WWDC. There are several orders of more activities going on than just Gruber's session. The WWDC keynote particularly for just 'developers'. It is tracked by CNBC, Bloomberg TV , etc. financial news sources. Mainstream press. etc. It is a general audience dog and pony show.

Some Apple TV+ thing is not really running counter programming at the same audience that Gruber is looking for . There is a wide set of press folks coming for WWDC ... not just developer and nerdy tech news types. Were the reporters from the Entertainment industry really ever going to go Gruber's show anyway??? Nope. Apple should run the screening during the peak of the daily news prep cycle for the reports ... that will maximize attendance? Nope.

Even if Apple let in some developers. Similarly developers looking for some non-work 'down time' to relax before the next day. There were not any movie theaters or other options for entertainment in the South Bay area? Please.
'
Counter programming would be running something that is a more like a direct substitute for Gruber's show ( e.g., high level execs talking about WWDC announcements with more depth. ). Apple telling folks there is an optional event is Apple 'steamrolling' Gruber. Give me a break.

This is more so Gruber playing the 'victim' card. Apple fooled him as to how Apple Intelligence was structured. Now they are stealing folks (mainly reporters) away with a free car racing movie (because his content is so tantalizingly appealing. ). Maybe hoping not to loose out on those media expense accounts charging up those $50 head tickets. For someone who really doesn't like Trump , he seems to very much like Trump's tactics.

This says to me that Apple execs still don't have clear AI messaging. They have the hardware, they have the market share, the just haven't tied it together (yet?)

Wow, I kept pestering Grok for sources and it just said it was "suggested by x posts"...ridiculous. Where did you find it was Nilay and Joanna?
Grok will tell you anything like it's the truth...

I just searched Google, restricting it to results in the past 24 hours, and it found several posts on Threads, Reddit and X about it.

No offense, but that's nothing. You made it sound like he planned an assasination.

It's the AI stuff.

I'm not fond of Gruber, but this is blinkered. First, he didn't actually say anything about Apple doing it to be vindictive—that was some poster here. Apple 'fooling' him is debatable, because until and unless Apple wants to cough up some corroborating evidence (they don't and won't) their word isn't worth much on this topic.

Everything I read seemed to indicate people came to his show anyway. I think it's crazy people pay $50 for him to do bad live shows, but otoh they are tech people at WWDC, their standards for what is good may be low.

The final part where you decide he's like Trump is just...I mean, get a sense of proportion.

I’ve hated Siri since day one. She’s a joke. I once even did a test. Siri vs. Alexa. I asked them both to play (I can’t recall which song), off Spotify. Alexa won by a BIG margin. Like 29 seconds or something. And it wasn’t some elaborate test, and I’m sure there are many outliers and such that could be argued. I’m just saying I can’t stand Siri.

I’ve been an Apple user since the 512K. I think the only game they had was Shadowgate. But poor Tim. I’d really hate to be in his position. Steve taught him and guided him all he could. But there’s one problem.

Tim is not Steve. Notice how right away their ad campaign had people in it? Diversified of course. The board of directors after drooling for this day to come, now began to feast. And it’s only going to get worse. I don’t know who Tim’s predecessor is, probably an AI robot called Stevie.

But it will be all over by then, and my guess is Jonathan Ives will be the only Jedi left to possibly save Apple. But by then, he may have switched to soda water since the world is now unable to be saved.
