Wow this update contains a lot of changes!! I’m shocked since 14 is coming so soon.

6% of COVID deaths coming from perfectly healthy and young adults is shockingly high. The other 94% being from underlying health conditions doesn't sound so scary until you realize nearly 100 million US adults have underlying conditions that can lead to serious COVID-related illness. Now find out how many people die from just the flu alone.
I still say it sounds scary. Unless these are people who jumped off a building (the underlying condition) and caught COVID on the way down then the 6% number might not even be that relevant. The real question is what are the odds a person with an underlying condition on January 1, 2020 who then caught COVID would be dead on September 1, 2020 had it not been for COVID?
I gotta chime in before this thread gets heavily moderated or moved to PRSI ;)

Yesterday the Finnish Insitute for Health and Welfare released its mobile phone contact tracing app (developed in country) and within four hours it had been downloaded one million times. In a country with a population of 5 and a half million, that is a good start. 84% of the population have smart phones. I have the app which at the moment is in Finnish and Swedish but will be available in English soon.

I’ve had 3 friends warned in the app. They got tested and despite being asymptomatic, all three were positive. They’re all self isolating, which will save the lives of those who they would have otherwise exposed. The system works.
So could someone clarify some privacy elements of this. When I am notified that I have been exposed to someone who is positive, is anyone else notified or is it my personal information to act on? In other words, when I find this out, do the authorities also find out that I have been exposed? This is the major reason why I am not getting involved in this program but perhaps if someone could clear things up I may have things wrong?

@arn - There should be a roundup for Exposure Notification, I think. Where can I get a list of all states and countries and see which have their own app, which are using Exposure Express, and which are doing neither?

Downloading iOS versions with this tracking is agreeing to Tyranny. 13.4.1 forever.

A location tracking device, audio and text spying, social control and modification - are you getting it yet? A location tracking device, audio and text spying, social control and modification - it's not 3 devices, it's one
You have no idea how the exposure notifications system works - go read the damn spec. It cannot track you in the way that you fear. And stop getting your news from misinformation sources.

It's taken so long to roll this stuff out, and it's still not available in all areas. It would have been a lot more useful a few months ago. :(
In the US, this is going to be useful for many months to come. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. Winter is coming.

I'm guessing that anyone in the San Fran Bay Area sees notifications every few seconds, even if it is slowing.

They're smart - listen and follow science

From my understanding even though it doesn't require an app app downloaded to receive notifications an app is required to report positive test results. This means if you live in a state that doesn’t have an app i.e. most states then no one can report being tested positive. So basically without an app it still doesn't work.

If I misunderstood this please someone correct me

Would like to see other bug fixes besides improving COVID tracking.
The real update that's not being mentioned here is it includes new Memoji stickers!

The funny thing is apple doesn’t mention anything about Covid tracking in the update notification when you download it 🤔 6DBAFB41-C2ED-4D4F-BF23-EF458CBCBA56.jpeg

those <insert jibe> Victorians.

Just an note, mate. Regardless of your politics or theirs; more than 6 million people have gone through, and are still going through, an incredibly difficult time right now. A large part of this hardship is to ensure the safety of not just themselves but you and the rest of the country as well.

So, with all due respect, you can take your <insert jibe> and jam it sideways up your <insert here>.

Would you care to explain your “6%” declaration to the rest of the forum and why you think it is relevant?

Preferably using your own words, not emoji or shady weblinks, if that is within your capabilities.

FYI, I know what you are referring to and have an opinion on both the number and the people who believe it, however I’d like to give you the opportunity to change my mind and perhaps educate the forum along the way.

There is no shady weblinks, actually is an official website... is interesting how the main "news" aren't talking about it... people should use their brain about all this BS!

So that's a no on explaining it for us in your own words? Got it.

So is this one that has to be opted in? Or do you have to opt out? Not remotely interested in having anything like this on my device.

Yay you can now be spied on without installing a police state surveillance app! Praise Big Brother

How the hell is this legal? It requires that people who have had a positive diagnosis be made public which would be a big HIPAA violation.
How did you determine that outcome? It's clear that is not process. And in case you didn't realise, but there is a world outside, much bigger, and clearly much more informed, and secured, beyond the borders of the US.

If you don't have an app installed on your device, and come into contact with someone who has tested positive to Covid 19, at some point fairly soon after, if that person has been in proximity to your device emitting a bluetooth signal, and receiving theirs, it will have been saved by your device, and when updated with their positive information, will notify your device id, of you been 'exposed'. Then it is up to you to go and get tested.
When you have a test, they will notify you either way, and there will be a method for you to respond to that text to notify them of your positive result. At no point until you are contacted in person/phone call will your identity become known.

Well, it can be all enabled/disabled by the end user too.

Can it really? How do I know that my choice to turn it off won’t be overridden by a government mandate?

And why are you all afraid of COVID? Ask these questions:
1. What is the percentage of the population who have died from COVID-19? (Hint: less than 1%)
2. What is the percentage of people who die from the flu every year? (Hint: 4-12% of those who are symptomatic.)
3. What are you afraid of?

Those who are immuno-compromised and their caregivers need to be offered a vaccine first and workers need to be protected legally, but the virus is in the open. It can’t be put back in a box and hidden away.

Some other thoughts:
The Spanish influenza is still alive and well today—it exists as the common flu.

Studies show masks do not prevent the spread of the flu. COVID can still penetrate the pores of any material barring a properly fitted and sealed N95 mask.

Masks—cloth or paper—are contaminated once you touch the outside of it. They are one time use only—for real protection. After that they are no longer sterile and no longer protect you properly.

Disclaimers: I follow all local guidelines and sanitary techniques due to my sensitivity for the immuno-compromised and out of respect for legal authority.

Please act out of reason, not fear.

Added 4 and 5 to make it easier to answer.

1. You should have added 'known' to have died. No one knows the real number, and to state on shows a lack of understanding of epidemiology. Leave it to the experts to judge, reading without peer assessment has no basis in academia.
2. Again, who knows? There is no recording of numbers, there are vaccines that work for some and not for others, and there are many that are symptomless. This is not influenza, so cannot be judged like. Trust if you see people who get covid, it ain't pretty.
3. Most are afraid of death. Those deeply religious whilst wanting to go to a place like heaven, don't want to die to get there. The fear with Covid, is the extent of the illness is as random as winning the lottery.
4. There are no studies on masks relevant to your claim. To clarify, you don't indicate a type of mask, and so therefore I have been broadly sweeping in my repost. There are certain masks that prevent certain sized pathogens. However, all face coverings have the ability to stop spray from one human to another, along with hand washing, and being aware of what you touch, is good strategy. Within healthcare, we know to do this for decades, you're learning for the first time. Trust us.
5. Masks are never sterile, to sterile paper or cotton, you either need to use a glutaraldehyde, Ethylene Oxide or steam sterilisation. A non 95 mask quickly soils after 3 mins, but that's not the point of the message being passed to you. The message is 'minimise your contact, inparticular handling, touching or being within someones cough range. Wearing a mask reduces the spray and therefore the distancing.

You may be bored, or fed up of Covid 19, but your life will not go back to the way it was, until we have minimised it's effect of the world's population. Be a good citizen not a Charlie Sheen.

I upgraded my iPhone 8, tried to enable Exposure Notifications. It told me that NYS has its own app and sent me to the app store. THere is no app for NYS, and I can't enable the notifications because of this. Anyone else experience this?
