Apple could have positioned itself in any number of cities. I believe Alexa machine learning group is also in Seattle.

Natch. Giannandrea is in charge of Apple’s machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy. That’s Siri is the front end of that.

We feel your pain. Here’s a screenshot from my photo album, “Siri's Greatest Hits”:

Yah, I have the same problems - even worse - I have stuff in my address book that I ask Siri to call, and then it asks if I want to call some business with the same name about 2000 miles away in another city. I have to go manually into my address book and pick out the same friggin thing just to dial it. Siri is getting WORSE.

True. I live in New England, yet Siri thinks I want the Walgreen’s not down the road but in Santa Cruz, California. Thinking there could’ve been a problem with location services, I asked Siri, “What’s my current location?” It answered, “It’s your opinion that counts.” It took all my strength not to smash my iPhone with a rock.

And Apple incurring and paying an extra $200+ million of loaded labor for that fluff and fake optics would go unnoticed, and make sense?
Do clearly don't have a clue on how much money can go in repairing Archie tech Jarreau (sorry this is what Siri makes of architechtural...!!) flaws in Siri.
And no, it won't go unnoticed - because thats the aim of PR

Seattle, lower cost of living? Please.

It's not cheap living here at all, unless you want to be up north or down south... and even then the commute isn't great. There are some places in SLU going for 3k+ a month @ 1br. / 1ba.

It's only going to go up.

The other day I asked Siri: "What is the divorce rate for couples who got married between 18 and 25". I KID YOU NOT... it told me the answer is 43. The screen showed: "CALCULATOR: 18+25=43".

In case you're wondering, I ended up checking Google and the answer is about 60%.
Weird: I just tried that question verbatim, and I got referred to the web (as per usual). That’s only marginally better. Looks like Siri’s consistency is as big a challenge as it’s idiocy.

I'm so glad to read that, several years from now, Siri will improve in performance. Google must be shaking in their boots!

Technically, its a matter of time for improvements with Siri. Its not something with artificial intelligence to be revamped over the course of a few weeks. We all know Apple is later to release various software enhancements, but if they improve Siri with dictation and deciphering enhancements, the wait will certainly be worth it. Siri has lots of potential, its long overdue for an overhaul and with this article and the recent Google acquisition with John Giannandrea (Who was in charge of search/artificial intelligence).

Your reply doesn't address my comment to your original point. And that is $200+ million/year for 500 employees in Seattle is being spent as fluff to simply to ease financial markets.

Really.

As if Seattle isn't already way overpriced in both RE and rentals....yikes.
And I would hope Apple would expand into some non-earthquake zones too.

Not really sure how I've gained as a consumer with machine learning implemented in iOS 11

oh wait, I haven't...

Seattle is cheap? LOL.

I hope these huge tech companies never figure out that the midwest also has smart people and the cost of doing business is much cheaper. I just don't want my cost of living to skyrocket! I know a few of these "smart people" who have moved out to the coast and have tried to get me to go out there to work. Yet they also complain about the ridiculously high expenses and they can't even afford a little 1200sqft house. They also have to work 50-70 hour weeks. Meanwhile I'm over here practically ballin' out of control by comparison on less than half of their salary, 40 hours per week, with a healthy and manageable stress level. So much for being smart!

I mean, actually, the midwest sucks. Forget everything I said. I was lying. Just cows and poop everywhere. I have to pump my own electricity! Zero fun. Terrible food—definitely no world-renown BBQ or any fine dining, definitely have zero top rated zoos or amusement parks, our movies are worse than what you get on the coast, and our gigabit fiber is just the worst. We only get like half the internets. Who even knows what's in the other half? Not me! There are definitely no artists doing anything creative or putting on any shows every week and especially on the first Friday of each month. And you have to wear sunglasses all the time because the clean air lets through too much sunlight. It's jarring. No, nothing to see here. Move along! Fly over!! We don't exist, you never saw this post. Just hay bales and cattails.

Yes, it seems like Siri has become sabotaged - maybe from the "leakers"

I remember Siri working quite flawlessly for this type of stuff a few years ago.

Idiots working at Apple need a punch in the mouth - at least that's how I feel when basic stuff stops working such as this.

If you want "Walmart" - it should be obvious you want it in the town you are in presently.

Yeah. I might have used a word or two different but I asked the same question twice with the same result (Calculator).

edit: Added screenshot (I just asked Siri again)

Apple recently hired John Giannandrea, the former head of Google's search and artificial intelligence division

Sadly, hiring the head or chief of anything, usually is just a publicity stunt... this type of person is far far from the trenches that actually create innovative technology. Apple has a lot of catching up to do. Hopefully they hired this guy because he's got a great network of talent that he can poach without fear of non-compete agreements. The people in the trenches are the innovators... the chiefs and execs are the marketers.

Wouldn’t that be “Siri’s Greatest Misses” ?

oh wait, I haven't...

Open Photos
Tap the search/magnifying glass icon
Type: Tree
(Or “cat”, or “food”).

Feast your eyes on Machine Learning.

Ok still unimpressed? Fine. Clear the search and type your wife’s name (or father or a friend). If you have a contact card with a picture of that person, ML on the phone has tied all those together to that contact.

Want more?
Go to a photo with a person in it. Swipeup to see the list of people faces itdetected. Tap a face. At the top, tap AddName. Type the name of that person and if you have a contact card, it ties them together. And you can add more photos via ML to train it. This association runs in the background on all photos and all photos in the future.

Sadly they got rid of my favorite in iOS 10 with predictive app suggestions. I loved that feature every day. Made my life smoother in the mornings too.

Apple’s ML is very subtle. Mostly in Photos right now. The silly-named “Siri App Suggestions” are also ML.

Enjoy!

Apple finally seemed to understand that Siri needs to get smarter with all these recent news we’ve been reading.
And all these news about Apple keep hiring machine learning and AI engineer hyping me so much.

WWDC is gonna be lit.
[doublepost=1524025150][/doublepost]
Please, please let WWDC focus on some huge Siri improvements. Thats all I ask. Oh, and a dark mode

Can’t wait for this year WWDC.

Seattle has become a hotbed for technology companies because of its talent pool and lower cost of living compared with the San Francisco area
Umm idk what they're talking about here... I'm an IT/CS student about to graduate and Seattle is a city I'm considering for work. The cost of living really isn't that good. I'll be making a pretty substantial living, even with a starting job right out of school, but I'll only be able to afford the humblest of apartments in the city. I'm talking couple hundred sq foot studios for the same monthly payment as a penthouse in other cities.

Good stuff. We keep complaining, rightfully, that Siri is stupid. This is how Apple changes that.

Um, this is how Apple prepares to change the issues we’ve been complaining about. The fix is when it actually happens ;)

The movie Terminator moves from fiction to reality.

Psst: Cyberdyne systems existed a number of years before the first terminator and one of their divisions is robotics. Likewise General Dynamics also is in robotics and featured on the Fringe TV show ;) we’ve just been watching the fairytale version of an upcoming reality. Too many believe in aliens and their invasion when we really know they off’d themselves with what will soon be our future tech ;) lol. J/k.

“Machine learning” = Skip Logic

Lmao this made me think of the first track off Logic’s hip hop album just released. ;)

Rumor has it the half floor had a portal into John Malkovich's head.

And here I’m thinning Apple just placed the newb with the plugin waterfall having a temporary basement office will **** all of Siri’s servers down like last years WWDC flick death of the apps.

"I'm sorry Tim, I'm afraid I can't do that." - Siri (talking to Tim as he's trying to open the Apple campus bay doors)

Man I’d love to see Tim’s reaction to an Echo places within a hacked HomePod in his office stating how sori is corrupted and making errors and advertise swapping out for Alexa. Responding in amazingly smart comical ways that would really have him in a panick.
