They are definitely not paying anything close to fair market value. It seems more like 50% of current selling prices on eBay.

I put in my old C2D iMac, they were offering about 60% of current eBay prices. Out of curiosity I entered the 32GB WiFi iPad 2 in perfect condition, they are offering $270, which is just silly.

This might be nice for someone who doesn't want to hassle with eBay or Craigslist, but you're paying for the convenience for sure. Kudos to Apple for the free recycling of devices they never manufactured or sold though.

If an iPhone4 just accidentally happens to fall into a Blendtec blender will Apple still accept it for recycling?

Fair market value my ass... They say they'll give me $756 for my MP, when I could get like $1800 on the street for it.

Indeed, I have a Powerbook 1.67 Hires that admittedly has some issues from a wine spill, but it still boots and runs. I just saw a parts only of the same model on ebay for $125. They told me mine has no value.

yeah

yeah, the pricing on some of these items is crap, someone is going to make a KILLING if people buy this stuff up. I could buy this stuff up for 10% more, refurb it and sell on craigs or ebay and make a killing myself.

C2D imac 20", all running, excellent 180$, sha right

I have recently sold my 20" iMac from 2007 and currently selling my 2009 HP HDX notebook on ebay.

Apple says:
Apple iMac Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz 20" White (2006-07)(MA589LL/A)
Estimate provided by PowerON:
$227.25

Mine sold for $510 (not including shipping.)Excellent condition.

I'm currently selling my notebook PC (excellent condition, with battery and power cord.)

Apple says:
PC - Intel Compatible Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 - 2.49GHz Notebook
Estimate provided by PowerON:
$80.35

Its currently in an auction on ebay at over $200 and still has a week left. It can run CS5 and play modern video games at high settings. I already did my research, it will sell between $320-400.

Make your own judgements, I've made mine and all I gotta say is if it still works, sell it yourself. Actually, act like you never read that last line. Contact me with what you are selling, I'll give you whatever Apple offers and throw in a few bucks to make it a better deal, then turn around and sell it for 50-75% profit. Oh and act like you never read the part about me selling your computer for 50-75% profit. :p
I'm joking by the way, don't contact me with what you are selling haha.

...too bad that....

yeah, it's always nice to see a business of however big try to pitch in :D

It seemed interesting, until I checked the Apple website and saw that you couldn't just drop your Dell off at the closest Apple store - you have to ship it someplace.

Why no Apple store dropoffs? Walk the talk, Apple.

Most of Apple's products are toxic, disposable ewaste - a minor nod to responsible disposal doesn't change that fact.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I can confirm that at least one Apple Specialist, Small Dog Electronics, is participating in the free eWaste recycling scheme by Apple.

I wonder if other Apple Specialists will offer free drop-off as well?

Does Dell?

EDIT: answering myself: well, at least Dell does seem to offer more places where one can drop the old thing, in addition to the shipping option. Apple does, but in many less places.
That said, it doesn't seem really fair to compare Dell's partnership to an existing firm (Goodwill) with the possibility of taking your old electronics to an Apple Store. Not really fitting the ... "experience"/goal of Apple Stores, I guess. In the same way that I don't see any "Dell boutique" waiting for your old electronics either!

However, Apple of course could also go into some equivalent partnership...

What I really don't see is the merit of jumping into "walk the talk" and such.
