So you’ve just given up?
That's one way of looking at it. I guess I just accept that nothing in life is free and if I want or need more storage I'm going to have to pay for it. If I get to the point where I can't afford more storage I will have to figure out a way to economize and reduce the digital clutter in my life. I certainly don't expect apple to increase the amount of free storage out of the kindness of their hearts.

one downside is that QLC storage typically offers slower read and write speeds compared to TLC storage.

Storage has always had different levels of speed, reliability, density, energy use, and cost. Some application data is going to need fast repeated access, and other storage will rarely be accessed. It's up to the OS and applications to make all the storage fully reliable and suitably speedy.

In other words, this is what error detection, error correction, caching, and metadata classification is for.

16 TB HDDs are slow and unreliable, but RAID them up and use a cache and they're far faster and more reliable. Use them for the right applications and they're a fantastic solution specific storage needs.

Case in point: The two Netflix movies that are stored on my phone do not need any kind of fast access. Having the OS dump them on plentiful-but-slower on-board storage makes a ton of sense with no downsides. Reserve the fast storage for non-archival class storage.

Who’s to say things won’t improve dramatically in a couple of years when Apple is ready to use? Two years is an eternity in technology advances. Why the knee-jerk negativity again. I’m certainly willing to wait and see.

its the typical negativity here.. people put down apple for years for not incorporating OLED into iPads, and then when they got it, complained because it had issues inherent to all OLED screens lol. So here they have been asking for more storage and when it appears on the horizon, without even trying it, they complain it's not the right type. The only conclusion you can draw is some people just like to complain.

pretty amazing how the need for more storage rises in phones, but in computers they are going down as Apple charges a fortune for internal storage in a laptop. Just glad Apple knows what is best for us as none of it makes sense to me.

Apple charges the same for increased internal storage for their phone or laptop, both start at low levels. The Macs currently can go higher. Not sure I see your point there.

But the case for more storage in a phone is at least partially:

Phones are meant to fit into a pocket, laptops are not. If you are carrying a laptop around, you can carry a small exterior SSD.

Phones are made to communicate away from WIFI and the internet. Those data charges can get expensive. Laptops are made to connect to the internet with low data charges so maintaining a cloud presence for large data sets is relatively easier.

2TB would be nice for some people, until remembering that Apple will multiply the price they themselves pay for that storage by something like 4,000% to calculate the price they want the consumer to pay.

I think the point is that while storage prices have absolutely crashed, Apple's pricing hasn't reflected that...

There is small problem with offering QLC storage on a phone which will cost north most likely of 3000$. Knowing Apple profit margin on 2TB will be like 1000%. Certainly moniker "Pro" will be just bad joke. There is no problem with obtaining good TLC 2TB NAND. It's solely for cost reduction and bigger profit margins.

For people using their iPhones in Pro video recording manner QLC is simply a kryptonite. Not for nothing QLC in IT is targeted at WORM devices (Write Once Read Many). It's openly stated by companies like Solidigm or Samsung for every industrial NVMe device. QLC has terrible efficiency and data retention. Of course Apple won't implement any of PLP - power loss protection - or DPP - data path protection - because of cost and lack of space (tons and tons of capacitors).

Please keep it to the facts. People complain because lack of innovation and Apple being years behind in offering tech widely available by competitors. 120 hz refresh rates; cheaper RAM; etc. Look at the state of the iPhone SE for example. It uses years old tech… no full screen, one camera and an ancient design. Still Timmy is charging you a lot more than mobile phones with more RAM, 120 hz amoled fullscreen displays, better camera’s, etc. If this isn’t an example of a good reason to complain your blind or get paid by Timmy.

Apple just pockets all the cost savings.

Remember when we were thinking Apple making their own chips might make the Mac prices come down since they wouldn’t have to pay Intel anymore?

LMFAO 🤣

Not sure what any of us were thinking.

What facts would you like me to stick to? when you say 'timmy' are you sticking to the facts or just being derogatory?

You mix facts with opinions. My opinion is some people just like to complain here. I don't understand it, but I am not alone in that opinion. Like the guy that always has a strong opinion on how much ram a Mac needs, but he doesn't actually have a Mac. Or the people like yourself that seemingly want to ignore apple is a for profit business, and you have a choice to vote with your wallet.

Obviously there are plenty of people that have voted with their wallets and are fine with the current offering of products.

The fact is people wanted more storage, and when it appears to be on the horizon, now they want Apple to give it away or it's just not right. You dont think thats a fact, just read this thread.

I dont recall anyone saying that. Though I am not surprised you might have. History doesn't support that position, the iPhones aren't cheap and they have apple chips.

And let's ignore the fact that the chips Apple DID make are improvements on what they replaced. Lets find something to complain about.

Fact is Apple overcharge you for RAM. Fact is that there is little innovation coming from the biggest (measured by market capital) tech company in the world. Fact is Apple is neglecting the Mac for years. Fact is that every new iPad, iPhone or MacBook is the same as the year before that, the year before that, the year before that, the year before that, etc. Same for Apple Watch which isn’t capable to last 24 hours when also using directions and workouts.

Apple is losing market share in China because it can’t keep up with competition over there. The only reason Apple is surviving elsewhere is because lot’s of Chinese brands like Huawei are being banned.

People have reason to complain about exaggerating prices for RAM or ssd drives.

I do hope people start voting with their wallets and use their brains more. Only this will put pressure on Apple to charge honest prices. I’m talking about RAM and internal storage. Not something Apple has developed on their own but buys at even lower prices in bulk by other oem’s.

I hope the European Union will put even more pressure on Apple to play fair. It gave us USB C so far and that’s a big win.

Apple ones went where the hockey puck should go, now it is following it.

I do hope Google pixel will become more available and that the new surface laptops from Microsoft will eat Apple’s lunch. This will be the only reason for Apple to get eager and nimble again. Not the company that it is now: arrogant, greedy, lazy and very slow in developing hard- and software.

Fact is Apple is a for profit business and the sooner you accept that the happier you will be. Innovation, updates, they aren't free or cheap. Many industries introduce lower priced models to attract the customer and then offer expensive upgrades. Sure Apple could change their business model so that they charge more for the introductory models and less for the upgrades, but one way or the other customers will have to pay. That's called capitalism. Rather than berate people for paying the expensive upgrades you should thank them for partially subsidizing the introductory model.

But okay, you keep on hating on Apple, and I will keep on buying their products. You're welcome

128GB is fine with me. So I’m hoping QLC will NOT be adopted across the board.
Same here. I have 128 GB on both my iPhone 13 and iPhone 15 and I’m using about 25 GB on each device. I don’t want to have to pay a higher price simply because 256 has become the standard.

And this is exactly what Apple is doing. Offering you a laptop with 8gb of RAM and a measly 256 gb of storage… want more… pay the jackpot.

Their greediness and lack of innovation will become their downfall. Mark my words.

Give Qualcomm a few years and their processors will run circles around Apples M-series. I won’t be surprised if Apple will offer Qualcomm in their future products either.

Every business should make a profit to survive and being able to invest in R&D. With so little products in their offerings and so little change with each new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch, there hasn’t been poured a lot of R&D into it.

I’ll wait a few years for you to see that too.

We’re already talking more about the iPhone 17 than the not introduced iPhone 16. If it comes with only a color change, action button and a camera upgrade… I hope you too will be wondering what the hell is going on there.

Enjoy your beloved 🍎

Last years price for 128 GB is the same as todays price for 256 GB. Would be insane if they charge you more for that… but it’s Apple. You’ll never know 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mark is that you? I bought my first Mac in 1984, and every year people have said exactly what you did. At one point it looked like they might be true. And no doubt, as all things done by mankind eventually fail, one of these years one of you is actually going to be right. But probably not this year. Probably not even in my lifetime. But hey. One of these years. Keep on predicting it Mark. Even a broke clock is right twice a day.

Btw, will I rue the day I ever disagreed with you lol.

BTW Mark, google is your friend. There is this thing called research. Apple spent a record 29.92 billion U.S. dollars on research and development in its 2023 fiscal year. 29.92 BILLION. That sure sounds like a lot of pouring to me.

Percentage wise it is still the least of all tech companies. Timmy likes to milk his loyal followers and whispers about privacy. Behind closed doors he laughs and count the beans with his fellow shareholders. It’s time they focus on products again!

Alphabet and Meta lead the surge in R&D spending, evident in the growth of the top 10 spenders in the 2023 Scoreboard, particularly post-COVID-19 (Figure 3). These companies at the forefront of the R&D investment ranking continue to significantly and consistently boost their R&D activities. With a 36% increase year-on-year, Meta was the largest contributor to R&D growth in 2022 overall. The R&D investment of Alphabet and Meta together correspond to 75% of the total increase in the Software and computer services sector. Microsoft, Apple, and Huawei similarly demonstrate substantial R&D growth over the past years. While Volkswagen, Samsung Electronics, Intel, Roche, and Johnson & Johnson also show consistent R&D investment growth, their additions are less dramatic compared to Alphabet and Meta.

Not surprised to hear that meta and alphabet have to spend a lot to harvest people’s data for advertising. Though perhaps some make it easier to do than others.

Take also in mind Apple spoiled billions on project Titan and their Vision Pro.

Timmy is spending most on Apple’s income to pay out dividends for Apple shareholders. Makes him famous amongst them. Time to break the circle!

cool. Can we get multiple user profiles? Would be nice to have completely separate user spaces. Thank you. With 1tb, one user could have 4 separate user spaces with 250 gigabytes per space.

R & D numbers can't be trusted in the least, in the US. They're commonly inflated for tax purposes, apparently, so a company appears to make no, or little, profit.
