Chances are that if you’re lost somewhere in the UK with risk to your life you’ll unlikely have regular signal. Even passing over Pennines can leave you with no connection. Never mind in more mountainous regions.
Try driving from Torbay to Exeter, as soon as you pass ‘ telegraph hill’ you’re in a complete dead spot, no phone, not even fm radio… handy in areas like that…. And it won’t be the only hill in the country…

I kinda wonder if more people will be heading off into dangerous remote areas now because they now have this backup plan. I know I've thought about it. I'd love to totally disconnect for a few weeks somewhere in the northern rockies. Have my iPhone but keep it off except to ping my wife once a day with my location so she knows I'm still alive, lol. Sounds like a dream. Maybe I could convince my work to let me do a sabbatical someday.

I want this in New Zealand, even if just for additional peace of mind. I already have a PLB strapped to my bag, but multiple devices, especially with two way communication on the iPhone, would be genuinely useful in a lot of areas.
