Skylake. I just can't bring myself to pay that much money for a computer with a 2 year old CPU and underpowered graphics.

well what I really want is a user upgradable (RAM and storage) Mac Mini with discrete video, but that's not happening in my lifetime again.

It's almost criminal how neglected the Mac Mini is. I'm sure the execs at Apple justify it by pointing out how well all the other models sell compared to the Mini while completely ignoring the fact that the Mini gets no marketing, no spotlight and generally always has one "gotcha" with the design or specs that drives people away. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. It doesn't sell because they're not making it worth buying.

I still know numerous Windows users who want to switch to a desktop Mac but have no interest in an all-in-one or spending too much more than a $1000. For those people, there is simply no option as the Mac Mini doesn't cut it. They need a reasonably powerful headless machine (i.e., with a GPU) that doesn't break the bank—something comparable to what they can find in the PC world. Apple has consistently missed or ignored that sweet spot for potential switchers. I've never understood why.

I have an 09 model iMac and the display is starting to die. This is making me hesitant to buy another one but it has had a good run.

I think my next purchase will be a MacBook but I love the specs-to-dollar ratio you get with the iMacs, they're much more powerful than the notebooks and they cost less.

But in my new apartment I don't have as much room for a desktop as I'd like, so MacBook it is...

The Mac Pro is meant for very specific applications (hi-res video editing, 3D rendering, etc.) It's not the best setup for typical use or even for gaming. Your typical user will get far more big for the buck from an iMac.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with chassis performance.

It has been thermal and acoustic performance than most tower chassis' currently on the market, despite having a much smaller footprint.

I do wonder just how powerful a modern day iMac could be if they still had the same chassis thickness as a Mac from say 5 years ago ......

That is what I've got. 2011 for the Win! Last of the reasonable size chassis, plus internal DVD drive. Plenty thin enough and it does not seem to overheat even in game play. Getting a bit long in the tooth though, especially without an SSD. I'm on the fence between trying a home upgrade of SSD or buying new iMac. But I'd want retina screen and the most powerful GPU Apple includes. Then I have to worry about thermal throttling. And I'd have to buy an external DVD burner. Hmmm, I think I will stay right here on the fence.

I really want a refreshed, top-end iMac Retina. With nVidia GPU option, please. All my CUDA enabled plugins and apps demand it.

Been holding out on my franken-PC for some time now and I want to destroy it ala Office Space. The sooner Apple gets a new iMac in the wild the sooner I can take out my frustration on that old machine.

Do you have this setup as a Fusion drive? How large is the SSD?
No, it's a bit messy but I've got a 3tb HDD and a 256gb SSD. Both split up 50-50 for OSX and Bootcamp. Each SSD partition houses the OS and apps, the partnered HDD partition houses the documents+files for each OS.

If I try to format my drive in Disk Utility it will try and turn it into a Fusion drive because both drives are the same brand and model as the ones Apple use. It can be annoying :)

My 2009 iMac died last Thursday, so now I'm waiting on a Skylake top of the line iMac for me and a Skylake rMBP as a graduation present for my nephew. Come on Apple, I've got my wallet open and I need computers

Why do we get rumors about every other Apple product, but NOT the Mac Pro?

Because it's a desktop that doesn't move a lot of units and there's less obvious third party supplier give aways like a 5k monitor. Apple can keep a Mac Pro secret if they announce them well in advance of shipping them.

May as well just get the mac pro

Not sure if you're being sarcastic. If so then yeah, it makes PERFECT sense to get a mac pro even though Apple used to sell that machine for about a grand.

If only apple didn't have such a fetish for thinness. Just imagine if they'd make the iMac (and even the mini) a bit bigger and it had the thermal capacity to handle a six core i7. Hell, intel is already up to eight core i7 and that will go up again in the future.

Also, Apple updates them when hell freezes over. The new version shipped end of 2013, not a single update since then.

They better put some Nvidia GPUs in there. AMDs are hot garbage for such poorly design airflow considering how much heat AMD gpus create. Worse yet, attempting to do anything at 4k on a mobile GPU is spitting in the face of consumers.

Geat your act together, Apple.
The fury X is better than a Titan X in certain cases. AMD cards are NO LONGER BAD.
