Apple today released its earnings results for the second fiscal quarter of 2020, but declined to provide guidance for the third quarter due to the current economic instability. Apple CFO Luca Maestri did provide a bit of information for investors, though, offering insight into how Apple expects the ongoing health crisis to affect product sales.

Maestri said that it expects year over year performance for iPhone and the wearables category to worsen in the June quarter relative to the March quarter, while for iPad and Mac, Apple expects year over year revenue performance to improve.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple sees iPad and Mac revenues improving due to all of the customers who are learning at home and working remotely at the current time.

Cook also said that Apple saw steep declines in demand in March and early April as the shelter in place orders went out, but in the second half of April, there was an uptick across the board due to stimulus programs, new product releases, and the fact that consumers expect the pandemic to "go on for a little while longer," stocking up on products needed to work at home.

Maybe Apple will make iPadOS more than iOS XL
The more all platforms have in common, the more they all benefit. That‘s in development costs and in economies of scale down the road. Especially as iPhone generates the most revenue and development costs. It can all be streamlined maximizing the benefit to Apple and consumer

A refresh of the budget iPad minus home button with an affordable magic keyboard case for it would be great for education and young families. It would be a great chromebook alternative

We added a new MacBook Air to our household as we needed another laptop for our Son's distance learning, since both my wife and I are currently working from home. Stores near us were low on stock so I believe this.

Uptick due to stimulus programs? So, there are people who can’t pay rent, buy food and are Unemployed, but they’ll Buy a new iPad Pro or $399 iPhone with their stimulus check? Even if you are getting more in unemployment I wouldn’t be looking at expensive purchases.

People need these products to work from home. Doubters beware.
Do they? For the first few weeks of stay/work-at-home, the stores were sold out of all the lesser expensive stuff. You couldn't find a cheap laptop in stock at BestBuy. Lot's of $1000+ laptops available. That tells me that people wanted to spend as little as possible to work from home.

Just because Cook says it doesn't mean it's necessarily true. I doubt little Johnny needs a Macbook Pro to Distance Learn for school.

Who said those struggling to pay rent and buy food are the ones buying Apple stuff? EVERYONE, rich and poor, got a stimulus payment. Could it be that those that are not struggling took that free money and bought a new Macbook Pro?

Plenty of people who got a stimulus check who are still working and getting their full paychecks. My wife and I are both working from home and have 2 kids doing distance learning. We needed another laptop as my 2010 13" MBP was on it's last legs anyway so it was a no brainer for us to get a new MacBook Air.

Cook can't lie on investor calls and people who want a Mac or iPad to work from home have to buy Mac/iPad. It's not like a leap in logic and the CEO just confirmed it. He even guided investors for it in the CURRENT quarter that Mac/iPad sales are trending stronger than normal, specifically because of work at home.

I didn't know that everyone that bought a Mac/iPad took a survey to answer what they were using it for! Cook is guessing. He has no clue why people are buying Macs/iPads. Work from home, or free stimulus money? Or just because they wanted a new one. Who knows.

The push to work from home only increases the growth potential of iPad/iPadOS. I work for a $15B logistics broker and this is forcing people to finally be open to more web based standards and cross platform apps. I anticipate a lot of the companies typically forced into cubicles with Windows 10 computers are now seeing the potential for less office spaces and a more mobile workforce.

Dude, Cook has actuals for April. He can see the Mac/iPad doing better and he SAID on the call he expects the current quarter to have stronger than usual iPad/Mac results. Tim Cook would constantly get data and information from customers...so he's not just throwing something out there. Words from CEOs are carefully chosen and he's no amateur.

You are mistaken - all Americans with income (adj gross) up to $75K (for single filers) and married couples with income up to $150K on last year's tax returns are set to receive the full $1,200 stimulus check (or full $2,400 for a married couple). Being out of work is not a pre-requisite.

Also $500 per dependent. So a family of four eligible for the full payment gets $3400. Also my employer gave us a $1000 tax free work from home stipend. Plenty of people out there who are still fully employed and just got some extra cash.

Maybe they will now upgrade the terrible front facing camera on the macbooks

Sadly I feel that won't happen in 2020. Apple pretty much was THE LAST laptop manufacturer to include a camera. The first generation G4's had a FW lid-attached iSight camera. the sight is terrible for quality. We live in an HD+ world ... Apple needs to remedy this and soon, please Apple please.

Like for the 17+ million unemployed that need to access the unemployment benefits websites.

I can do that with a PB G4 using TenFourFox ! I actually used my G5 to access my states unemployment website to file a claim. No one needs a 3500$ computer to browse the web !

Yeah, I’m not gonna lie, I’m not impressed with the front facing camera at all on my 19 MacBook Air. I was FaceTiming the other day, and I actually thought maybe it was defective, that’s how bad it is. But in all reality, Apple probably sees very little value to upgrade the camera on the MacBook, being it’s more of a last purpose Use case. But still, it would be nice to see you a 1080P versus 720P quality.
