Sadly I feel that won't happen in 2020. Apple pretty much was THE LAST laptop manufacturer to include a camera. The first generation G4's had a FW lid-attached iSight camera. the sight is terrible for quality. We live in an HD+ world ... Apple needs to remedy this and soon, please Apple please.

Personally, apart from this period of time when I use Zoom frequently, I never had a reason to activate the webcam on my iMac, and I don’t see myself having much of a need for it once this pandemic is over either.

I think Apple knows that an upgraded webcam isn't really going to be a driver for new buyers - and feels that people in the eco-system aren't going to be bothered too much by it either. It’s not like I need my colleagues to see me looking bored in 4K, and the detail likely ends up getting degraded due to WiFi connectivity, or when you minimise the windows to share your screen.

It’s never going to happen until the MacBook lids become thicker. This is why iPhones have camera humps. The only way to improve is to use larger image sensor and that requires a larger lens and the lens has to be further away from the sensor so the resulting image is in focus. Can’t get around physics. Even the front facing iPhone camera module, which doesn’t protrude, is probably three times as thick as a MacBook lid.
My guess is most people don’t care about web cams anymore (switched to smartphones) and until that changes Apple isn’t going to improve the quality. A MacBook from ten years ago pretty much has the same quality as today.

"Apple Expects to See Growth in iPad and Mac Categories Next Quarter as People Work and Learn From Home"

I very much doubt that. Unemployment has skyrocketed. While Apple may see increase in services I doubt people will make large expenses in such uncertainty.

Just boot from external disk, like Samsung Portable SSD T5 any Mac at home and work. All your stuff in your pocket!

If this is true I wish they were more transparent about it. When the iPad Pro is 7MP and iPhone 11 is 12MP, users get really disappointed by 1MP MacBook Pro.

The push to work from home only increases the growth potential of iPad/iPadOS. I work for a $15B logistics broker and this is forcing people to finally be open to more web based standards and cross platform apps. I anticipate a lot of the companies typically forced into cubicles with Windows 10 computers are now seeing the potential for less office spaces and a more mobile workforce.

I don't believe that Apple value web based standards and cross platform apps. Their current direction points to a more lockdown ecosystem in both software and hardware level.

I’m more so saying companies that are now living in a remote environment will ultimately push in that direction. I have no issues myself though on iPadOS with any web based or cross platform apps.

sorry but the Dell XPS 13 that launched in December has a lid thinner than any MBP or MBA and has a 1080p capable camera in the lid up top as well.

so in the words of t he virgin marry, come again? ;)

it’s likely as someone above you stated that Apple doesn’t see a higher resolution web cam as a driver for MB of any kind and unfortunately that’s bad for the consumer.

Sorry, but I just looked at the specs of the 2020 XPS and it lists a Widescreen HD (720p) 2.25mm webcam. Dell even lists 720p twice on their specs webpage.
