It's a nightmare for people like us that prefer digital faces.

I want digital time (preferably with seconds) displayed horizontally in the center. Ridiculously standard setup for a regular digital watch.

If we had third party watch faces I'd have an abundance of ways to achieve that.
The 3rd party developers would provide a lot of junk faces, but they’d also provide faces that would put Apple’s faces to shame. Perhaps that’s a partial answer.

100% they would, but there are so many trash apps in the App Store. That doesn't stop us from getting great third party apps. The same should be the case for watch faces.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here. 😃

I just wish they'd fix the World Time face so it had the correct times on the dial.

At the risk of sounding extremely dense, what do we consider all the “3rd party watch faces” in the App Store. I have several family members that use them.

You mean something like this?

That just lets you add some visual flair.

Those don't let you create something like what we're asking, where the digital time is presented in the center of the screen with seconds. Currently we're at the mercy of Apple creating a face like that.

No, like this. Why aren’t these considered “third party watch faces” per the thread title?

Native Apple Watch faces are flat, boring and don’t take advantage of the screen capability. Anything new that has come out since AW1 is basically just a slight change to their basic look which isn’t broad or usable.

There are probably 1 or 2 watch faces I’ve used from Apple since AW4 when I got my first one and the other 99% are completely useless to me.

It seems like when I see other peoples watches over the years they are also using the same handful of faces.

I’ve used Clockology for my AWU and love it. It just sucks to have to run an app to get a cool looking face. With apples product design standards which I consider very high, their watch faces look like something designed by an 8 year old.

If you look closely you can tell those are the existing first party watch faces with some extra flair added to them. An app like that isn't able to do something such as display the time horizontally in the center with seconds. It can only dress up around where the time is placed.

I'm completely oblivious to how all this works... does Apple provide some sort of API for these devs to work with?

These are just guesses by me but in the image that says "new faces every week" it looks like they're just showing different wallpapers on the built in photo watch face.

The image that says "daily chart" looks like they're taking the built in "Modular Duo" watch face and implementing their own two large widgets.

This is a scam (has been for years). Apple does not allow custom watch faces, period.

These guys just created their own watch app and users then have to launch it every time they want to see a custom face. It is of course totally limited by what apps can do on WatchOS and is also reset by the system after some time so you can't keep it running.

So these faces are just apps that run in perpetuity? Seems like that would really drain the battery. I have seen family members using these, but never bothered to ask about the details of how they worked.

I think there are two types: Those who just configure the stock watch faces, replace the background, set a font color (looks like your gallery). Anyone can do that themselves.

And apps who show stuff that isn't possible with Apple's faces. But those are just apps.

I notice no more than 5-10% extra battery drain on my AWU running Clockology. It does have the downside of tuning off after about 30 minutes. It’s fun to play with and shows the potential if Apple put effort into their faces.
