The reason Apple is choosing AR over VR might be much more simple then you think:
NOT ONE APPLE COMPUTER IS CAPABLE OF RUNNING VR and AR is much less graphic intensive as is VR.

AR is cheaper to implement and will give Apple another reason to charge more.

MR(AR) will change the world forever. Smartphones will be not much in future when compared.
I have heard that time and again with different technology but it doesn't end up happening. Why? In the end there has to be a real and true user problem being solved. AR doesn't clearly solve a clearly defined user problem. Same as smartwatches which is why they're still very niche after several years of push marketing. Just as with Pokemon Go it will be a novelty that people buy and then put away and move on just like 3D TV.

AR the next big thing? Welcome to 2013. The next big thing is actually VR which is a superset of AR.

yes because VR is so wonderful lol. Its a toy market. VR closes you off from the real world and has little to know real purpose. It's fun, i'll give you that but thats where it ends. AR is informative and will be adapted into things you currently use on your tech devices today.

A somewhay clumsy first version for games and some AR apps would be interesting but that depends on price.

I see a use for them when driving or biking. For pleasure or work, doing deliveries and having the route, gps information and recipients name. Maybe even scanning the packages so that when they open the vans door the right box pops up immediately.

Apple is invested in fitness and wellness now but glasses that fits that category is unheard of. I had glasses for 20 years before I had a lasik eye surgery done. Training with glasses suck. Today I barely use sunglasses but they serve a purpose when its sunny outside.

If the third iteration of the glasses are down to weight and size of a pair of regular pilot sunglasses and give me toggle between indoor/outdoor mode, AR view and a full day of battery they will be interesting.
