Gimmick plain and simple to disguise the fact that Apple's iPhone innovation has long since peaked. Slightly larger phone to accommodate a larger battery? Nope. Keeping tech that's worked for decades like a 3.5mm headphone jack? Nope.

Useless tech like 3d that nobody really gives two **** cents about? Yes!
I feel bad for your limited thinking. The 3D application can be used for a TON.. native AR support in the camera app? Point and shoot your camera at language you don't understand for real time translation, etc?? There is a ton here you can do.

The 3d camera is for AR. That's going to be a band new way for people to use phones.

The other things in your post have literally been discussed to death and I don't think it's possible to add anything more to that discussion.

Unless there is just a killer application for this technology, I wonder how much longer can a marginally better camera be a selling point?

With AR being focused, I would love to use the ar iPhone on Tim Cook and see what's inside his head.

I doubt it will be ready by 2017. I'm sure iphone 8 is already finish, and pencils were down in early 2016.

Until Samsung Notes are back on the market, Apple will sit back and let the money flow by charging premium prices for 2 year old tech.

Your probably right on the first part, the next iPhone is probably already finished, but with it being the 10th anniversary of the iPhone it's probably going to be a big upgrade.

As for Samsung Apple don't really need to do anything, I'd guess the problems with the Note 7 have damaged the brand name, some people may think twice before buying one.

If you take a picture in 3D, I wonder if it'd be possible to edit lighting after the fact. Maybe it could detect where light sources actually were (I.E., from the flash) and simulate what the same picture would have looked like if it had been lit a different way?

That would allow you to take a picture at night and simulate as if the picture had been taken during the day, for example.

Just trying to think of ways capturing in 3D could be useful even without a way of displaying in 3D.

hater nonsense. Bluetooth sucks so bad, i'm constantly having to re pair my devices...W1 is awesome solution.

touch ID is flawless.

motion coprocessor.

AX chips are best in industry.

etc etc...it's clear apple is the leader in an industry of copy cats. except theirs blow up, oops.

You're right. I do hate that Apple constantly cheaps out on their specs and then tries to charge an arm and a leg for it. I do hate that touch id is certainly NOT flawless. I hate that Apple has such an obsession with thiness that it ends up compromising design & battery life and costs, unnecessarily, legacy ports for no other reason than they can line their pocketbooks with dongle money. I hate the fact that iOS and macOS are no longer superior operating systems. I hate the fact that Apple has been giving the finger to professionals the last 6+ years.

Yes I am a hater and Apple is a leader only if you consider nickle & diming their customers with mediocre specs and laughable hardware "leading an industry"

They lead to the tune of a few hundred billion in revenue a year. Thankfully consumers have options if they don't like iOS, as long as its android.

That's a shame though, I really was impressed with the Note 7. I'm all for competition and with all the elements they brought to the table, I thought they really did have a killer phone.

Except it really was a killer, and not in a good way!

Pretty clear to me that there will be an iPhone 7s (normal and plus model) along with a 3rd being the "10th Anniversary Model". The latter being the only one with OLED, new body and this new camera.

So now rather than making you choose between the two since there isn't feature parity, there'll be a 3rd to throw into the mix. This is Cook's Apple. Product lines aren't simply anymore and they bleed you of all your money. Macbook Pro and iPad/pro are a great example of it.

Edit: In case you want to know why... iPad Pro is what the iPad should have been upgraded to. But no. They simply introduce it as the "pro", charge more and keep the same old iPad at the same old price. The "pro" should have taken the iPad air 3 spot. Macbook Pro is the exact same, I mean, they're still selling the early 2015 MBP at full price. Bunch of bull if you ask me.

Technically, every year, the camera is only Marginally better. But with the dual camera in the 7 Plus, it has a lot of potential.

Yea exactly, although I'm not a fan of Andriod that's why I stick to iPhone's but it does seem like Samsung have stepped up their game in recent years. It's also embarrassing for them because they used the Note 7 and it's event to take a jab at Apple with the lack of the headphone jack, it has not only backfired but is also very embarrassing!

iPhone 3DS

But seriously...what a gimmick to bump up the OLED price.

Also, if they got rid of the camera bump, imagine the battery life increase iPhones could get, along with other hardware. Remember how they said that phones are a fight for space inside? Yeah, you started that fight for yourself, Apple.

How can you call a feature that has not been released yet a gimmick. You have absolutely no idea what Apple is up to. They have expressed great interest in AR and this would be a step that way.

Seriously, can apple think of anymore useless things to put in the next iPhone? We don't need a curved screen, we don't need 3D pictures!! Didn't they learn anything from the TV market, curved screens are a worthless fad, 3D along with it, especially when using a phone!! Why not get a bigger camera sensor for higher quality pictures, or a 2x zoom less that actually works indoors (so disappointed in this one, at least warn me when it switches to digital 2x). Maybe increase battery life.. so many better things that could be done. It's like force touch, while it's ok for the home button it's really hit or miss everywhere else. Just a bunch of gimmicks to make up for the lack of true innovation.

Or how about hook it up to your 3d printer to print a 3d copy of the scene. Could be interesting.

I always thought that someone should put two cameras on a phone eye width apart for true 3D photos, where they can be blended by eye. It would be like the old 3D stereoscope viewers but digital.
